Rachael let the ripples claim her body as her legs faded
into one and her feet shifted into a two pointed fin covered with fish scales.
It’s been years since she’d taken her second form. She’d forgotten how much the
transformation hurt.
“What are you going to do?” Diane ran her hand through
Rachael’s long, silky brown hair. “I always loved you in this form.”
Rachael had to admit she’d missed her second form, but law
was law and even though she no longer interacted with the Mermaid Society she
tried to abide by the laws she grew up with.
“This is risky.” Rachael slid from the boat deck, letting
the icy water soak into her scales. “Father forbid me from coming back to the
Cove, but . . .”
“Then don’t go.” Diane sighed. “Not for me. I love you to
much for you to risk your life. Your father isn’t known for his diplomacy, or
kindness.”
“He will understand once I tell him why I need to speak to
him.”
“And if he don’t?”
She did not want to think about that. Her father would have
the right to imprision her. Not something she thought he would stoop to once he
found out he had a grandchild on the way. Diane and her had never considered
her getting pregnant. They’d known it was a chance to happen, which is why they
took care not to come together during the Transition cycle. The two week period
every three months that she was became both male and female. Diane and her wasn’t
sure how they’d lost track of her Transition Cycle, but they had. Diane and her
weren’t upset about an upcoming child, but they had no idea how it would affect
Diane. Far as Rachael knew no human had ever carried a child to full term.
Whatever full term was for a half Mermaid, half human child.
“There is no other choice.” Rachael gave Diane a smile and
dove into the water, swimming deep into the bowls of the ocean, heading for her
father’s Cove. Once her home. Once her safety net. Part of her hoped her father
opened his arms and embraced her, but she knew that was a pipe dream. Her
father was the most stubborn man among the Mermaid Society.
