Chapter 10
Hop
Damn. What in the . . . Situation couldn’t be any worse. Charlie would be making another call to my father. Father was going to go dragon shit crazy. For more than Charlie not knowing this, but because he’d have to come to the same town as his son. Not an easy feat for two royal dragons to be so close. My father’s dragon viewed me as a threat to his seat of power. My dragon would view father as a opponent to be eliminated. Add in . . . Cree. Fuck. He’d be given a crash course on dragon history. Lessons, from the looks of things, Mr. Hodges stole from him. Not to mention the history about his mother’s bloodline.
“Hello,” Cree slapped his arm. “I asked a question.”
Charlie’s smile confirmed the look that I knew Mr. Davis would be wearing. Only Cree could have gotten a smile from me from slapping me. Let alone be the only person alive that could get away with doing such. If only that took me having to ask a huge favor from Cree away. It didn’t.
I took Hop’s hand and locked eyes with him. “Do you trust me?” As if I needed to ask. My man knew I’d do nothing to harm him, but I waited for his nod. “Then can you do what I am about to ask you.”
“Depends.”
Course it did. My man never openly promised something he knew nothing about. Mr. Hodges screwed up big time, but he taught his child right. Man raised a head-strong person. One who had no problem doing as her Godfather or me said. In most cases. There were a few when Cree was stressed it was harder for him to let him or Charlie take command.
“I need you to hold your questions until we get home.”
“Why?”
“What I know can’t be discussed in open.”
Cree tilted his head, studying me for a full out minute. “There’s something else you need to tell me, isn’t there?”
Course he knew there was more. The two of them had always been intune to one another. More so than other halves had before they were officially claimed. Our bond being in the starting phase would’ve allowed us to be a bit closer, but not to that point.
“I need you to let Charlie make a few calls before I explain what is going on. I might even have to ask you to wait for another person to arrive.”
Slow response, but I eventually got a shrug. A verbal response would’ve been better, but if Cree wanted to wiggle out of doing as asked he would. Still, I knew it would be the best I’d get. My man was smart as a whip, which is why I loved him so much. That was why I knew that history was wrong. Had to be. Cree was too kindhearted to lead to destruction.
“Hop?” Charlie didn’t look at me, but the anguish rang loud and clear.
“It’ll be okay.”
“You sure?”
Wasn’t. Charlie knew I wouldn’t lie to him, which is why I didn’t bother to try and put him at ease. Truth be known, I had not fucking clue how the new turn of events would go down. One thing was for sure . . . Cree wasn’t in danger of being forced to live with the Stone family. She was nineteen, just like Rex said. The family tree that Rex kept proved that. Bigger question was how much else did it prove. Would history be written as told, or had all that shifted the day Cree chose to become a man. Questions for father.
“Baby,” I tapped the computer, “is there more files on here?”
“About ten others.”
“Protected or not?”
“Not.”
“Can I have the computer then?” I’d known not to ask Cree for them if they’d been guarded. He’d demand to check them out first and it would have been within his right. As if I could tell him no anyway. Man had me wrapped around his little finger. And I loved it.
“Why?”
“I want to see if there’s - -“
“More to what you already know?”
Cree had him pegged. It’s why he made an excellent other half for me. Cree would listen and question before acting, which in my mind meant she’d accumulate well to the dragon’s way of life. I hoped. There was time when Cree would become dead set on something and then . . . well he’d shoot out more than a fire-breathing dragon.
Cree’s temper should have clued me or Charlie in. Most other humans who are paired with a dragon are mild and timid, even standoffish. Cree never had been. Charlie contributed it to me being the second dragon in charge.
“You might as well answer him.” Charlie banged his head against the car seat. “This is all my damn fault.”
“How so?” Cree cradled the laptop to his chest when I reached for it. “Not until you answer me.”
“First, you are right baby, I promise to fill you in the moment I can.” I held my hand out and shifted my gaze to Charlie. “Second, Charlie, you aren’t the only one to blame for this shit storm.”
“Only one alive.” Charlie’s snort had me sucking my lower lip under my upper one. Man did not pout well. “Just like old times. One of us stirs up a stink and the other takes the fall.”
Wasn’t going to touch that with a dragon’s tail. Father told me of how Rex and Charlie were and that those two had secrets buried deeper than any cavern in the world. I’d taken his word to mean that even he, the dragon leader, didn’t know. Such facts hadn’t bothered me. Dragons like people had parts of their lives they kept to themselves. I didn’t have to know every detail about the dragons I would lead. Or so I’d thought. Might have been wrong. With Rex . . . hindsight was for the shit.
“What’s that mean?” Cree laid the laptop in my hand and shot him his famous, don’t forget your promise glare.
“It means . . .”
I nodded when Charlie glanced my way for permission. Charlie would never indulge more than he had permission to.
“. . . your father and I got into some tight spots before. Each of us bailed the other one out. Only - -“
“Dad’s not here.” Cree moved so she sat beside Charlie and hugged him tight. “Can I do so for him?”
Just like his Cree. The man would move heaven and earth to make the ones she cared for happy. Another reason I’d been thrilled to have him as my other half. The day I’d been blessed with him was the best day of my life. No matter what happened in the future. I would never regret the day I became part of Cree’s life.
Charlie and Cree fell into silence as they held one another. The two of them were more like father and son than Rex and him had ever been. Rex hadn’t openly spoken against Cree’s sex change, but I’d overheard him discuss it with Charlie a couple of times over the years. He was no pleased. The man never stopped believing that his little Zoe would grow out of her desire to become Cree. Should have been more than clear to him how serious Cree had been when he sat him and his mother down at the age of ten, fifteen, and the day before his eighteenth birthday. Wrong. What should have told him how serious Cree was when he gained Charlie’s permission and help to line up someone willing to the do the procedure on his eighteenth birthday. I knew of no doctor willing to risk such. Rex’s displeasure hadn’t stopped him from being close to Cree, but . . . wasn’t the same after Cree proclaimed his desire to be a male.
Even I didn’t quiet grasp the bond between Charlie and Cree. The two of them could finish each other’s thoughts. In fact, they pretty much saw eye-to-eye on everything. A time or two came to mind when they’d butted heads, but they were mild and discussed until they came to a compromise

 “When was this trip?”
“Right after my fifteenth birthday.”
“After you and Hop officially started dating?” Godfather’s eyebrow lifted and he tilted his head.
I nodded and scanned the screen. The computer had the basic desktop icons. Most didn’t stand out, but one shouted at me to open it. So . . . I doubled clicked it.
“Damn it.”
“Hey,” Godfather shouted at me. “Watch the language.”
I knew how he felt about me cursing. Hated it worse than my parents did. Guess they figured if they couldn’t stop doing it in front of me then they had no right to say anything to me. Not that it mattered to me, but Godfather had always scolded me for using such words, even though he used them regularly.
“What is it?” Hop bumped my shoulder, smiling at me and then at Godfather, who ended up rolling his eyes at Hop.
“Another password.” Frustrated me more than bothered me. I wasn’t so confused about what would be required to get past it. My dad would have stay along the same track. What else about the tripe . . . Ah, yes. The Prince and Lost Chosen. Dad swore it was as special as I was.
Attempt at Prince Dragon failed. So did Lost Chosen. “Um . . . do you guys know the fable of the Prince Dragon and Lost Chosen.” Figured neither did, but couldn’t remember if dad had called it something else.
Wasn’t sure which one gasped first. Hop, or Godfather. “What is it?”
“Who told you about the Fire-Breather Legend?”
I held my breath as I typed in the different name. The fire opened, but there was no date of any kind. Just a bunch of werbsite links. “Damn it.”
“Cree . . .” Godfather drew my name out. Wasn’t sure if it was for my language or ignoring his question. Both probably.
“What?” Hop leaned further into me.
“You got you phone?” He handed it to me. “Thanks.”
The first website downloaded, revealing a Dragon Folklore website. The second link gave me another link regarding the Prince Dragon and Lost Chosen.
“Why all this Dragon information?” I muttered as I keyed in the third site.
Noting about dragons, but . . . My breath stuck in my throat and my hand covered my mouth. There was no way. I couldn’t be looking at . . .
“What?” Godfather and Hop asked at the same time.
“Stone Family Tree.” Not  sure how I got the words past my breathless lips, but they came to life. “Ten generations, if not more.” Long family line.
My palm  stung as Godfather jerked the phone from my hands, earning himself a snarl from Hop. Godfather quickly handed the phone back to him. “Sorry.”
Never before. Godfather did not apologize to anyone. Clued me in on the fact that the two o them knew more than I did. Being in the dark was becoming irritating as hell. Would not stand for any longer. My parents lying was bad enough. Hop doing so was worse.
“You two spill this minute.”
“Spill what?” Hop asked without taking his eyes from his phone.
“You two know something about all this. I want to know what it is.”
“We don’t.” Godfather stretched his legs out as far as he could. “This is all unexpected.”
“Yeah and I’m the fairy princess.”
Hop chuckled, but it sounded more like a paint huff. “You just might be, baby.”
“What!” Godfather shouted making Mr. Davis press himself further into the side of the limo.
“Take a look. Looks as if you best friend was more than you knew.” Hop handed Godfather the phone.
Godfather’s face went ashen and his mouth dropped open. I waited for an explanation. Neither provided one. Doubted I’d get one when Godfather dropped the phone into his lap and hung his head. The lack of forthcoming had her retrieving the phone and studying the screen until four more names caught my attention. Raquel Dawn Dray-Stone, Rand Carter, Rex Hodges, and Katherine Zoe Stone Hodges.
“What does this mean?”

“What do I . . . Mr. Davis?” Was kind of a loss as to what to take and what not to. Hated that feeling and never wanted to be that way again. I was a topdog among the Logan House. I should be able to react to any situation in the proper manner. Not have to depend on others.
“Cree, it’s fine. Breath.” Mr. Davis opened his briefcase he’d brought in with him. He scooped up all the money and passports. Once he removed the brown envelope a silver laptop came into view.
I beat him to the punch about putting it in the briefcase. Didn’t matter. Mr. Davis lifted the case and nodded at the laptop. It needed to stay with me. I was the one who should go through it. Dad left it for me. Not for anyone else. Wrong thinking from the start. I knew Godfather would search it for any secrets it could reveal, but I should be the one who looked at it first. Shouldn’t I? My parents left it for me. Not anyone else. Why though? They knew I would not go against Godfather, or Hop. Those two led the Logan House. We did as they said.
“You have to, Cree.”
“Why?” Whatever was inside could be answers to my situation. It was my right to know before anyone else. “I don’t either.”
“It’s not wise to be seen carrying it outside.”
“Why not?’
“What if the FBI is lurking? Do you not think they’d try anything to gain access to it?”
Damn. They would. Still, no one else had the right to pen the laptop before I did.
“Cree, I’ll give it to you the moment we are back in the limo.”
“Swear it.”
“I swear.”
I slid the laptop ontop of the envelope and snapped the lid closed. “Let’s go.”
Mr. Davis didn’t have to go far to thank Mrs. Kline, she was waiting outside the door. Once she got us past the securities stations we left. Not in haste, like I wanted to, but like a normal person who came to retrieve or put something in their safe box.
Once in the car, I snatched the briefcase from Mr. Davis’s hands. He didn’t bother trying to stop me. It did earn me a scowl from Godfather, but he never aid a word when I retrieved the laptop.
“You sure you want to be the one to look?” Hop laid a hand on my thigh.
No. Had to. “My place to do so.”
Hop didn’t argue with me. He did watch me like a hawk ready to dive bomb at me.
With shaky hands and fingers that circled the perimeter of the computer’s letters I waited for the main screen to greet me with a password request. “Shit.”
What would dad had used? Had he set the computer up, or mom. Either would choose something I would know. Not anyone else.
“Godfather, do you know mom’s favorite flower?”
“Roses.”
“Do you know what dad’s first pet was?”
“Cocker spaniel. His name was Rudy.”
“Damn it.”
“Won’t be a common questions password.” Hop laid his arm behind me.
He was right. They would have chosen a major event in my life. One both of them would be aware of, but . . .
“Godfather, you weren’t there for my birth, was you?”
“No. They were in China.”
I tapped the edge of the computer, thinking over everything that me and mom done by ourselves. Nothing stood out. How likely would it be something that mom, dad, and me done as a family? Not likely. Most of those trips Godfather had been asked to come along. Some he had. Some not. Dad and I had done lots together. One stood out more than the rest, because mom had been pissed at dad. Could understand. He’d taken her on a trip a week long trip to China. He’d only contacted mom when we were in the air and refused to bring me right back home. It’d been a huge telephone fight and then another when we got home. Been so bad, mom sent me to my room. First time in my life, I saw them shout at each other.
“Do you know of a common place they visited over there?”
“Afraid not.” Godfather sighed. “Why do you think the password relates to China?”
Good question. More like it had to do with a personal item to her. Like a charm.
“Do either of you know where I got this?” I lifted my dragon necklace that I’d been sliding through my fingers.
Godfather and Hop shook their heads. My fingers flew over the keyboard and hit enter. The screen faded to black and began booting up.
“Baby, what’s special about the necklace?”
“Dad got it for me when we went to China.”
“China?” Godfather grunted. “He never told me about that.”
Hop glanced at Godfather, whose frown covered his entire face.

Chapter 9
Cree
“Cree, baby, we are here.”
Hop’s soft lips pressed against my cheek as my eyes fluttered open. I’d fallen asleep. When? Not shocking since Hexton was four hours away. Full of nothing but green pastures and dairy farms.
“Sorry.” I rubbed my eyes. “You should’ve laid me beside you.”
“Why?” Hop tucked a curl behind my ear. ‘I like you resting on me.”
“You make a great bed.” I smiled, leaving off how comfy he was after a round of lovemaking.
“Ready to go?” Mr. Davis laid his computer aside.
Shoot. There would be . . . Id required. Red tape to jump through. “Uh . . . How are we going to get by the red tape?”
“None to overcome.” Mr. Davis pushed the door open and climbed out.
What? “Why not?” I followed him.
“I’ve contacted the President of the bank to find out what you’d need. Apparently, Mr. Hodges had it setup so your alias, or I could access the bank.”
Huh? Made no sense. Why would dad setup a safe box in my alias name and leave it so Mr. Davis could access it? The point had been to keep the law from discovering private information. Mr. Davis name on the account could have became a major snag. Although . . . Mr. Davis knew nothing about the box, let alone he could access it.
Mr. Davis held the glass door open for me. “Confusing, isn’t it?”
Boy was it. Made no sense. Last couple of days hadn’t. My entire world had flipped upside down. Explained why I hadn’t put up more of a fight about Mr. Davis helping me so much. Okay, there were a couple of exceptions, Godfather and Hop. Those two men out ranked me and I did pretty much what they said.
Mr. Davis approached the information desk and asked where Mrs. Kline’s office was. The red-haired lady pointed to an office to the left. We walked over and Mr. Davis knocked.
A gray-haired woman with granny style glasses appeared in the doorway. “Suppose you are Mr. Davis, the lawyer for Mr. Stimms.”
“Yes, ma’am. This is Katharine Stimms.” The name rankled me, but dad had warned me that he was not going to change my alias until I’d been a man for two years. It’d only been a month or two since my procedure. “We’d like to access her box.”
The woman stared at me for a couple of minutes and snuffled. “Doesn’t look like a woman.”
Shit. My body tightened and stomach dropped to the floor. How would Mr. Davis get by this little snag.
“Guess not. She has just completed her change to a man.”
The woman gasped and took a huge step back. “That’s why I called you, so I knew what kind of ID Cree would need.”
“I see. Well . . . Considering the circumstance I will need to documents that . . .”
“No you won’t.” Mr. Davis stood up taller. “You ensured me that my name was listed as a representation for Mr. Stimms’ safe box. If you need anyone’s ID I can produce mine.”
Right. That’s how he would get by the red taped. Shouldn’t have been any to start with, not with Mr. Davis listed. The woman was just a homophobic. Bigot against the Transgender community. Would she have been the same way if I’d been gay? No. she would have not asked such a question. There was no outright way to tell if someone was Gay or Lesbian.
Mrs. Kline took a deep breath and nodded at Mr. Davis who pulled his wallet from his suit jacket inner pocket. He held it out to her and she quickly glanced and passed it back to him.
“Follow me.”
There were two security stops. One required Mrs. Kline’s fingerprint. The other she passed with a seven digit code. She needed to learn to cover the pinpad when she entered it. I read each number she entered and it was imprinted into my mind. Not that I needed it. Just a habit of mine. Dad told me to always pay attention to my surroundings. Gather all information that would aid me in the long run. Wasn’t sure how getting passed the second security would do so, but . . .
“Cree,” Mr. Davis passed me the key Mrs. Kline had just passed him. “Open the box.”
Mrs. Kline started to object, but Mr. Davis cut her off. “It is my right to let anyone I wish to open the box. All you had to do was provide me the spare key. You have done so. No further job for you to do.
I unlocked the box while Mr. Davis forced the issue that Mrs. Kline leave the room. Once I heard the click of the door, I lifted the lid. Was weightless, yet it felt like it took all my strength to push it up. I locked onto a brown manila envelop, several passports rested on top of it. Not to mention five lines of different currency.

Chapter 8
Cree
Charlie had made sense. Logically at least. If the blood test favored the Stones . . . if the Hodges had stolen me for profit or been mixed up in trying to deceive Godfather then she had better discover the proof to gain control of my own life. Or . . . the court letting me stay with Godfather. Convincing them it wouldn’t be as hard since he’d been supporting me all my life.
“Baby, you back with us?”
I nodded. “have you gained access to their computers?”
“There what? ‘Charlie quirked an eyebrow. “No members have permission to store computer files on us.”
“Not on you.” I sighed. “Dad and mom kept no files on you, but they kept in-depth personal records.”
“What type?” Mr. Davis piped in.
“Finical. Receipts. Deeds. Photos. All kinds of stuff.”
“Do you know where they kept it?” Hop ran his finger up the side of my throat and paused over the edge of my lips.
“It’s in a safe deposit box.”
“They have no boxes in their name.” Charlie frowned.
“Not in their name.” Cree couldn’t believe he was having to spill secrets that her parents should have enlightened Godfather to all these facts. Not me. “It’s in my alias’ name.”
“Which one?” Mr. Davis tugged his computer from his bag.
“Katherine Raquel Stimms. It’s at Rake’s Natural Bank.”
“In Hexton?” Charlie covered his face, mustering, “of course it is. The one town I wouldn’t think to search.
“Why not?” Hop stretched his arm down until his hand reached mine, then twined them together.
“Dad’s hometown. Dad swore it was the safest place to stash ourselves if the Logan House fell.”
“he’s right on that.” Charlie groaned. “It is the one place we have not considered since we left. It was our last resort place. No one knew it was connected to us. Not even . . . “
“Who?”
I leaned forward and stared Godfather down. Me and Hop were the only two people who could get by with doing so. Still, I’d asked my dad several times about Hexton. He never answered me and from the looks of Godfather’s blank stare there would be none coming.
“Uh . . . Sir.” Mr. Davis’s tentative tone had all of us facing him.
“What is it?”
“What is it?”
“I need Cree to verify something for me.”
“What?” Hop tugged up and onto his lap, wrapping both arms around me.
“What name did you say it was listed under?”
“Katherine . . . Fuck.”  The name hadn’t ever registered with me. Too much of a coincidence.
“What!” Hop snapped, making me cringe back from him. “Sorry, baby. What is wrong?”
“The name.”
“What about it?”
“The woman claiming to by my mother is named Raquel. They called me Kay.”
Cool, yet warm arms wrapped me into a deeper cocoon, soothing me until Godfather slammed his head into the back of the limo seat. Not so much his actions, but the fact that he’d cam to the same conclusion as I had. If it was as I feared, then more shit was coming my way.
“How likely is it to be a fluke?” Cree faced Mr. Davis.
He shrugged. “Could be, but . . .”
Didn’t need him to answer. Slim chance since the first name wasn’t Kay and the last name wasn’t Stone. Still, people used nicknames all the time. Kay would be a viable name for Katherine.
Loads of questions. How had my parents came to have me? How did they pull the ruse over Godfather? Why would they even try such? Why did it take so long for my real parents to show up.
List of question could go on and one. Yet, no answers would come until the test results were in, or someone retrieved the compute from the safe deposit box.
“Godfather,” will you be taking me to retrieve their computer?”
Godfather darted his eyes from Mr. Davis to Hop, before he nodded and reached between Mr. Davis and I, opening the partition between the front of the limo and the back.
“Change in plans.” A murmur was all I heard. “Take us to Hexton.” Godfather sat back, sighing. “You and Mr. Davis will have to retrieve what’s inside. Hop and I must remain out of sight.”
Odd. Why? Did it have to do with the same reason behind her dad’s reason of avoiding Hexton?
My mind flooded with one question before the last faded. None were voiced. Not from me, Mr. Davis, Hop, or Godfather. A deep silence plagued the limo. All that could be heard was the hum of the limo moving and the tapping of keyboard keys. Had no clue what Mr. Davis was working on, but he was focused more than a dog eating a chicken bone.
Godfather had closed his eyes, but I knew he wasn’t sleeping. More like he was replaying every detail of the last nineteen years. Had to be killing him to think his best friend had played him. Godfather was a proud man. He worked hard to obtain the life he had. Having his best friend pull the wool over him would more than rake over his nerves. It would eat away at him until he discovered how it happened.
Hop held her tight against him and nuzzled my neck. A simple jester he done when he contemplated a major issue. Not sure what he did when I wasn’t around. Didn’t care. What I did was that he said I cleared his mind and gave him a smoother train of thought. I never knew any of those thoughts. Wished I did. It would help me understand how Hop was a master at working out a puzzle. Then again . . . I feared the one facing me was out of his range.

“Cree, baby, what are you thinking?” Wasn’t sure if I wanted to know. Didn’t need him going off on his own plan of attack. It could make the entire state of things worse. “Tell me what is going on inside your mind.”
Cree glanced at Charlie and said, “What is the plan if this test goes against us?”
Charlie lifted an eyebrow at me, which had me nodding. Cree’s lack of knowledge of the dragons and the limit of what he could be told . . . they were in a bind and needed him armed with as much as possible. Not to mention Cree had the right to know that people were fighting for him. Not to mention, Cree was extremely bright. He might seen another option.
Tight muscles in Cree’s body lessened when Charlie mentioned emancipation, until he heard how long it could take. When Charlie explained how they were looking into the Hodges’ past and money, Cree went limp in my arms.
I moved so his body rested across the seat next to us, and placed her head in my lap. A blank stare greeted me as I kissed her forehead. It’d been too much for her.
“I shouldn’t have told her.” Charlie hung his head.
“You did right.” Making me remind you that when I need to focus on my other half wasn’t fair. “She deserves to know what other surprises might come up.”
“There’s too much stress on him.”
No disagreement there. Cree was a super strong man, but had limits like anyone. Last bit might have stung her and caught her off guard, but he would regain control of himself. Soon. Knew it. Then he’d be hell bent on clearing her parents’ names. Just hoped doing so was possible.
Cree’s eyes fluttered, but he remained focused on the roof of the limo. I moved so all he could see was my face.
“Baby, you back with us?”

Chapter 7
Hop
“What is taking so long?” I peered out the tinted window, cursing each passing second.
“Your Highness,” Charlie’s use of my proper name tipped me off . “You need to calm down. Your dragon is showing.”
Dang it. Charlie was right. I took one knife-like claw and used it to pry the others from the leather seat. Took me flexing my hands a couple of time to force them all the way back.
“This is driving me crazy. I’m not sure if I can take another night of upheaval.”
“You have to.” Charlie pointed at the front entrance. “Here they come. Remain in control. Now isn’t the time to tell Cree about your other side.
“He looks pissed.” I hated the straight lines stretched across his face.
“It’s a mask.” Charlie nodded towards Mr. Davis and Cree. “Look at her balled up hands. He’s struggling with his own control.”
“What’d they do?” I’d kill whoever dared destroy my man’s typical happiness.
“No telling, but my Goddaughter isn’t happy. Can you not feel her emotions?”
Wished. Would take at least two more intense connections for me to gain mental access to Cree emotional state. What I could do, was pick up on ripples of incoherent snippets of energy weaves.
The limo door opened and I reached for Cree the minute he made to climb in. “Nope.” I tugged him onto my lap. “No seat but the throne for my man.”
Warmth from my dragon flowed from me, wrapping around Cree, easing him as much as he eased me when he snuggled deeper against me.
“How did it go?” Charlie wasn’t talking to me but asked just what I wanted to. My first goal was to get my man to a state of relaxation.
“Terrible.” Cree muttered against my neck.
“What happened?” I let my fingers trail up and down her spine.
“They treated me like a prize.”
“What!”
“Don’t.” I’m sure Charlie was going to rush in there and knock their heads together, sure what I wanted to do, but it wasn’t the time or place for such brash reaction.
“Why not?” Charlie stuffed his hands under his legs.
“Won’t help.” Wasn’t Charlie the one talking me down a minute ago? Oh, boy, would either one of us make it through this without falling to our dragon’s emotions?
“You know you want to.”
“I do.” Anyone who made my man feel less than his wonderful, amazing self deserved destruction of the toppest priority. “Mr. Davis” I twisted my head so I could so see over Cree’s shoulder. “What does he mean?”
“I assume it was the way they told her she’d be coming home with them.”
“Wrong.” Cree’s huff ruffled my hair. “I won’t stay with them for one single minute.”
Cree meant it. He’d run from them and right back to one of the Logan House safety zone. There were many around town. If the Stones lived in another area, I’d make sure Cree knew where everyone in that area was located. He’d have access to everyone around the world.
“We won’t allow it, Cree.” Charlie fixed Cree a strong drink and pressed it into his hand. Cree did not seem to notice Charlie’s offer, which was shocking. He never missed a cue from his Godfather. “Hop, get him to drink this. It’ll help.”
“Sir,” Mr. Davis scooted further into the limo seat. “I’m not sure alcohol is wise.”
“Why not?”
“She’s underage.”
“So.” Didn’t understand what that had to do with the price of dragon eggs.
“They may check her for drugs and other stuff.”
“The fuck they will.”
Charlie’s growl was worthy of mine and my fathers. His patients were running thinner than mine. One of us had to keep our shit together and since I was . . . It sucked to be the head dragon. I mean . . . the situation with Cree affected me more than Charlie. Yet . . . I should have expected it to effect Charlie in such a manner. He viewed Cree as his son, meaning he took it as a personal as I did. Kind of shocked me that I hadn’t taken notice of how on edge Charlie was before then. Damn. I’d been lost in my own personal hell, forgetting everyone else around me. Some leader I would make. Leaders put others first, even when their life was in turmoil. How in the world did father manage it?
“Charlie.”
Dragging out his name caught his dragon’s attention and hand him discreetly tilting his head. Hadn’t been my objective, but his orange glowing eyes faded into the background.
Cree braced his hand against my stomach and pushed up, separating us by mere inches, but the move brought all my attention to him. He wiped his eyes, revealing pure harshness that had shivers wafting over every inch of my skin. I’d seen him determined before, but . . . something entirely different. Spooked me and had my dragon pushing forward. I kept him at bay, by reminding him that it was not time to reveal itself. He didn’t like it but accepted it.

The glass window slid open and a nice elderly lady smiled at me. “Dear, Mr. Stone already notified us about his daughter’s arrival.” The woman’s face held politeness, but she gave Mr. Stone a quick look and shook her head. It was that small show of support that had me squaring my shoulders and taking a stance for myself. I gave the woman a small smile of my own and spoke loud and clear. I made sure Mr. Stone heard me.
“I am not his daughter. Never have been. Never will be.”
Mr. Stone gasped. Mrs. Stone wiped her face and hung her head.
The secretary nodded and replied, “I have informed the ladies in the back that you are here.”
I didn’t even make it back to Mr. Davis’s side before a short white-coated man said, “Zoe Hodges.”
“That’s not - -“
“Come on.” Mr. Davis unsaid words for me to shut my mouth had me following the white-coated man.
I wished it had only been him that entered with us, but Agent Carter and the Stones came as well. If it would have done me any good, I would have objected to them being in the same room as me, but . . .
“Have a seat.” The white-coated man waved at a chair that held a blue strip of plastic rope. “This won’t’ take long at all.” He tied the blue rope around my arms and prepared my skin.
“How long will it be before the results are in?”
“Tomorrow.” Agent Carter answered.
“Then we can take you home.” Mrs. Stone’s words made me tense up m yarm.
“Relax, please.”
“Cree?” Mr. Davis moved towards me, but I held my free hand up.
“I’m fine.” Was and wasn’t. My anger boiled so high that it was past exploding. It was evaporating, but that didn’t mean I could lose my shit. Mr. Davis did not need me to blow whatever plan he was working on. Nope. I had to keep my shit intact. That meant shoving down the smartass response that I had about let fly. Then again . . . the presumptuous douche bags deserved more than a smart mouth. They earned a swift kick for making me feel like a prize. I wasn’t. wouldn’t be treated like one, either.
“All done.” The white-coated man slapped a piece of tape over the rolled-up gauze.
I took the empty spot beside Mr. Davis and watched as the Stone’s blood was taken.

Godfather leaned in and kissed my forehead, tapping his forehead against mine. “Listen to Mr. Davis. Do exactly what he says. We’ll be here when you are done.”
“What!” Hadn’t even considered them staying behind. “You have to come with me.” I could do this without them at my side. No. they were my rock. Holding me together. They had to come.
“They can’t.” Mr. Davis frowned.
“Why not?” Sounded way calmer than I was. My insides rippled and bile stuck in my throat.
“I’ll be at your side. It won’t’ take but a couple of minutes, then you come right back to them.
No answer. One wouldn’t come. Damn it. Hated being protected so much that I was in the dark. It made me cold all the way through. Nothing took it away, not even Hop’s warmth when he wound his arms around me, and pulled me against him.
“It’ll be okay, baby. Sooner this is solved the sooner your life will be yours again.” A soft kiss against my neck had chill bumps racing down my spine. “Go on, baby.”
Right. I could do this. I was strong. I was Hop’s man. With him at my side I could accomplish anything I set my mind to. I took in a deep breath and forced myself to leave Hop’s arms. I took the first two steps before Mr. Davis fell instep behind me, like most of the Logan House members did. Respect for my position among the Logan House. Most of the time it did not bother me. Then . . .  I needed support. All I could get. Someone to lean on. My strength always came for my parents, Godfather, and Hop, all of which wasn’t allowed or couldn’t be at my side. Sucked.
“Here we are.”
Mr. Davis touched my arm and nodded at the office with a bright red door. He reached around me and opened the door. The simple act of kindness, that always came my way, put me at ease more than I expected. It seeped through my pores, chasing away the chills of stress, filling me with peace.
“Kay, dear.” Mr. Stone stood and made one step towards me before Mr. Davis blocked his path.
“Let me to my daughter.” Mr. Stone snapped so loud that I cringed. Inside. No way would I let these punks see me flinch. Plus . . . I wasn’t . . .
“I am not female. I’m not your daughter. My name is not Kay.” I took in a slow breath and let my anger rush from me as I exhaled as I glanced at Mr. Davis.
“Mr. Stone, I suggest you return to your wife’s side.” Mr. Davis pointed at Mrs. Stone.
“Mr. Davis,” Agent Carter, who had walked in behind me, sidestepped me and went to face Mr. Davis. “Would it be so much of a disposition to allow the Stones to speak with their daughter?”
“I’m not - -“
“Cree,” Mr. Davis shook his head at me and pointed at the lady behind the desk. “Go let her know you are here.”
Right. In and out. Quick as possible. Then I’m falling into Hop’s arms and let him take all the internal stress rest on him. Wasn’t something I did often, but I was past my limit. These asswipes refused to accept the fact that I am no longer a woman. They refuse to call me by my name. Not even the name I grew up answering to until I told my parents I related to men more than women.
“Cree,” Mr. Davis placed his hand on my lower back and gave me a light push.
Right. The sooner they took my blood sooner I could return to the limo. Battling with them got me nowhere.

Chapter 6
Cree
I tossed the book beside me soon as I heard the lock click. First thing anyone could have seen was my face since I blocked the door from opening all the way. Kind of comical.
“Cree . . .” Hop took my hand and tugged me far enough out of the way that he could open the door and pull me into his arms. “Ready?”
“As I can be.”
The walk to the limo was short and quiet. My mind even zoned out the birds and morning sunshine. The ride was as quick and quiet. None of us had much to say and the tension was thick as frozen chicken. Mr. Davis read over some papers. Godfather stared into space, which he only did when he was mentally digging through something. Hop nuzzled my neck as I plastered myself against him, debating yesterday’s events. More importantly my mind zoomed across all that might have lay ahead of me.
I was far from ready for the test. Didn’t want to know if mom and dad had taken me. Didn’t want to know if I was seventeen instead of nineteen. Didn’t want to know if Godfather wasn’t my Godfather, even though he would be no matter what any blood test showed. Those other people wouldn’t be part of my life. For any reason.
“Okay, Cree.” Mr. Davis laid his stack of papers down. “The test is simple. They’ll draw some blood from you and Mr. and Mrs. Stone.”
“They’ll be there!”
“I’m afraid so.”
“Why?”
“To make sure they provide the blood for the test.”
Surely . . . “They wouldn’t . . .” what if . . . “You think they tricked the FBI.”
“Cree,” Godfather took my free hand, “There’s several options we are considering.” Right consider every possible result and prepare for the worst. “We want to ensure the Stone’s give the blood. Not someone else.”
Would someone lie about something so . . . How could anyone spin such a tale. Should have considered it. The TBI took my blood while I slept. Or . . . Had they? Maybe they substituted someone else’s blood. Sickening. Horrible. Did the FBI want to take the Logan House down so bad they’d stoop so low?
God. Why had I kidded myself so much? Agent Carter and the DA had been after Godfather for ten plus years.
“Cree, baby, you okay?”
“No.” no use lying. Hop always knew when I did. Plus . . . no one would be okay with their life being fucked around with in such horrific manner.
“You can do this, Cree.” Godfather squeezed my hand and the limo door opened. He climbed out. I followed him with Hop getting out behind me.

Lies Don't Matter Chapter 5 part 2

“Hope so.” Charlie twisted the doorknob, but paused before he pushed the door open. “Makes more sense than Rex and Grace stealing another person’s child.
“Doesn’t matter if Agent Carter did this, or if the Hodges lied to us. Either way, a shit load of crap has been delivered to my man’s doorstep. I won’t have it.”
I’d do whatever it took to ensure my man stayed where I could take care of him. Where I could ensure he has everything he desired. That was my right. He belonged to me. I belonged to him. That’s all that mattered to me and my dragon.
I stepped into the office, letting Charlie bring up the rear. He was the second highest-ranking dragon. No one messed with him and his loved ones. Without facing his wrath. No one wanted that. Just like no one wanted to see just what my dragon would do if they tried to take Cree from me.
Study held about ten, chest high stacks of books. There was no sign of the desk, or Mr. Davis. “Mr. Davis, you in here?”
“Yes, your Highness.” Mr. Davis sounded as if he was behind the books, but I couldn’t see him. “Behind the desk.”
I rose onto my tiptoes, spotting the top of his head. “Why are you on the floor?”
“Desk is full of case studies.”
“Is that good?” I made my way around a few smaller stacks of books until I found the sofa.
“Yes, your Highness.” Mr. Davis relocated half of the books from the desk. “Senator Travis told me which cases to refer to. I’m studying up. This isn’t my area of expertise. I don’t want a surprise to bite my dragon butt.”
“What do they pertain to?”
“Emancipation. Custody cases. One or two on how Agent Carter’s trickery can be used in our favor.”
“We are still headed down the emancipation path?” I crossed my legs, cursing the anger coursing through me and my dragon.
“Second or third option.”
“First is?” Charlie glanced at his watch.
“Senator Travis wants us to focus on finding a connection between Agent Carter and Denny and Raquel.”
“He’s thinking they are in on some ploy?” Charlie tapped the face of his watch, as he showed me it.
“Yes. He also suggested we hire a private eye to dig into how they allowed their child to be kidnapped.”
Wasn’t considered the story behind the events that supposedly led up to the invaders losing their child.
“He also suggested we look into the Hodges old records.”
“Old records?” I leaned forward. “What for?”
“Money trials. See how they lived before petitioning for entrance to our den.”
Shit. Cree would be devastated if her parents had come here under false pretense. So would Charlie. Charlie knew Rex since he was ten. It’s also how he became Cree’s Godfather. He hadn’t been there for the birth, but had received pictures and spoken to the Hodges every day of Cree’s life. Those two reasons was why Charlie had no qualms on letting the Hodges enter his den when they came back to the states. Shit. Charlie was responsible for them returning to the states. Rex had lost his job in China. Charlie pulled some strings and got Rex on in town. It hadn’t paid nowhere near as much as Rex had been making, so Charlie bought them a house and made up the differences. Charlie told me that he felt it his responsibility since Cree, or Zoe as she was known as then, was his Godchild.
If the Hodges had stolen Cree, Charlie would take on the full blame, even if it was not his fault. He’d feel that way. The man felt any actions of his den member reflected on him. Rex being Charlie’s best friend would tear him in half. Would Charlie handle such a blow? Sure hoped so.
“Time to go.” Charlie kept his normal calm façade up, but I knew the idea of being deceived by Rex and Grace ate at him.
“Charlie?” I stood and waited for him to respond to my unasked questions.
“I’m fine.” Charlie opened the door, waving him out. “Let’s go and get this shit-storm straightened out.”
Charlie put on a great costume when it was needed, but I could see the pain etched across his eyes. If I could see it, Cree would. That would upset him more.
“Pull it together before you see Cree.”
“Yes, your Highness.”
“Didn’t mean to go into top dragon mode.”
“I know. You are worried about him and you should be. Focus on my Godson. Not me. I can handle whatever comes to life.”
