Trade In and Up Chapter 4

Hi,

Hope everyone's New Year started off on a good foot. Mine has been good so far. Since things have settled down from the holiday and NaNo, I'm going back to making two post a week. (Unless there's an unexpected reason, or sickness that comes up.) So this week, there will be one today, and one Wed. just like in the past.

Hope your imagination can soar when you read.

Julia

Chapter 4

Why did he keep saying that?

“Now, tell me what caused these to mare my Boy’s pretty face.” he wiped away the straggling tears.

“Not your boy.” Maybe if I said it enough he’d quit saying it. “What do you think? The love of my life was shot in the head. I went over a bridge in a car. All but drowned. Did, and was brought back to life, only to come face to face with the man who wanted me dead. Then someone who says he’s FBI steals me away in some teched out van with a manic driver.”

The arms around me tightened, but what I saw bothered me more than the strange arms around me that sent warmth through me. Somewhat. Jackson’s eyes in the rearview mirror told another story. Not sure what about those dull brown eyes that told me something about what I said was not the truth, but something wasn’t. Not much to not be. Other than them being FBI agents or them taking me to safety.

Knew I’d been stupid as fuck to believe they were FBI agents. Special Agent Preston Clarkson might have the credentials, but . . .  I wiggled until I was out of his arms and scooted away from him.

“What’s wrong, Boy?”

“Stop calling me that.” Snapping wasn’t what I meant to do, but it’s what I did.

“You know what respect is. I expect it, even know.”

“Fuck you.”

“Comfort time is over.” Special Agent Preston Clarkson got up and made his way back to the front.

Once he was back in his seat, I scooted to the end closest to the back door. I waited until we came to a stoplight and then watched them. Soon as I knew ours was about to turn green I threw the doors open and jumped out. Took off running right towards the woods that sat on the left. If I could get lost in them.

No car doors slammed. No shouts. No tires squealing. No other sounds of them coming after me. Didn’t have time to look back and see what was taking place. Had to keep running, putting space between us and them. No sense of where I was, or where I was going, but getting lost in the woods seemed smart. Not lost so much as making circles. I had a pocket knife to mark the trees with to keep up with the path I took, so I did not get lost. Once I found a nice place to hide out in, cave or thicket of bushes. After some time passed, I could come back out retrace my steps back to the road and find a town. Not sure what I would do then. I had nothing but the cash in my wallet. My bank cards were of no use. If I used them then they’d be able to track me in seconds.

A loud howl rippled through the air, causing me to pause.

Shit. Wolf? Dog? Either did not sound friendly. I had no way to defend myself. Had to find - -

Something slammed into my back, knocking me flat on my stomach.

Not from . . . Had to be. His dad told him . . . Edward sat back, letting the sofa material wrap around his body. Would his father have . . .  He might have. Was it feasible to believe Richard? Edward just met him, but . . . he’d been the right hand goon for the higher up for the last twelve years. He would know how they would send out official documents. He’d enforced them many, many times. His status was part of what . . . .
Who was he trying to kid? The paper had always been questionable. Dad was known for getting his way, and when he’d given me the sheet of paper it had came out of the blue. Right after . . . He would have been able to tell his Coven that he had received the paper from the higher ups and no one would have questioned him. Dad knew how to keep his Coven in line and did so with an iron hand until it came down to one of his children. Then he was known for giving them anything to make up for the lack of participating in their life. Edward loved to believe his father was this awesome great man, and he was, but when it came down to family life, Edward had a false picture. The one that his father liked for everyone to see.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure you’ve heard of my name, even if you never knew my face.”
“Everyone knows your name.”
“Is that why you want nothing to do with me?”
Was it? Kind of. He was a scary man. One who would go by the Coven laws. But when it came right down to it . . .
“Not completely, then.” Richard sighed. “I do wish you’d talk to me.”
“I do wish you’d read the letter.”
“Would it give me a full answer to the problem?”
Damn it. Could Richard just not read the letter and let me have a few moments to gage how I was going to break this to him easy.
“It’s easier just to rip the bandage off.”
Richard’s comment had me smiling at him.
“You truly are gorgeous. I’m sure we can have a great life together.”
“How do you know it is a bandaid?”
“Your eyes hold a continuous tinge of grayness, which dulls those sexy baby blues. I’ve seen it plenty of times while on assignments. It’s common among those who had their heart ripped out. I’d do anything I could to ensure no one hurts you again. I would never do such to you.”
“Course you say that. You are my other half. No other half is supposed to hurt the other one.”
“But you are.”
Damn it. He was right. Edward knew his rejection had hurt Edward, but it had not made him give up on him. Nope. He’d kept right on pushing. Trying his darndest to combine their souls.
“I don’t think you mean to. I think you are truly scared. I’d like to know why.”
Edward could not tell him why. There was no way he could let the hurt part his mouth. Nope. If he did that then . . . Richard was right. In so many ways. Ripping the bandaid off should have been done months ago. Time he did so.
Edward stood and made his way to Richard and lifted his chin, pressing his lips to the man. Soon as their lips touched sparks chased one another over his body to Richards. It was like an electric storm between two souls.
Warm arms slipped around Edwards as Richard tugged him closer. Hadn’t been what Edward expected, but it was more than pleasurable. Edward thought Richard would pull away from him and demand to know the truth behind his rejection. What he got was way, way better.

The glass window slid open and a nice elderly lady smiled at me. “Dear, Mr. Stone already notified us about his daughter’s arrival.” The woman’s face held politeness, but she gave Mr. Stone a quick look and shook her head. It was that small show of support that had me squaring my shoulders and taking a stance for myself. I gave the woman a small smile of my own and spoke loud and clear. I made sure Mr. Stone heard me.
“I am not his daughter. Never have been. Never will be.”
Mr. Stone gasped. Mrs. Stone wiped her face and hung her head.
The secretary nodded and replied, “I have informed the ladies in the back that you are here.”
I didn’t even make it back to Mr. Davis’s side before a short white-coated man said, “Zoe Hodges.”
“That’s not - -“
“Come on.” Mr. Davis unsaid words for me to shut my mouth had me following the white-coated man.
I wished it had only been him that entered with us, but Agent Carter and the Stones came as well. If it would have done me any good, I would have objected to them being in the same room as me, but . . .
“Have a seat.” The white-coated man waved at a chair that held a blue strip of plastic rope. “This won’t’ take long at all.” He tied the blue rope around my arms and prepared my skin.
“How long will it be before the results are in?”
“Tomorrow.” Agent Carter answered.
“Then we can take you home.” Mrs. Stone’s words made me tense up m yarm.
“Relax, please.”
“Cree?” Mr. Davis moved towards me, but I held my free hand up.
“I’m fine.” Was and wasn’t. My anger boiled so high that it was past exploding. It was evaporating, but that didn’t mean I could lose my shit. Mr. Davis did not need me to blow whatever plan he was working on. Nope. I had to keep my shit intact. That meant shoving down the smartass response that I had about let fly. Then again . . . the presumptuous douche bags deserved more than a smart mouth. They earned a swift kick for making me feel like a prize. I wasn’t. wouldn’t be treated like one, either.
“All done.” The white-coated man slapped a piece of tape over the rolled-up gauze.
I took the empty spot beside Mr. Davis and watched as the Stone’s blood was taken.
