Chapter 11
Cafeteria reminded me of high school. There was a huge line for a buffet style counter. Rex must have been the last to show up, because he was all the way in the back, but it did not keep him from hearing the conversations taking place. Wished it had. Would have saved him some trouble.
“It’s her son. My dad says so.”
“Yeah, mine told me that Rene’s wolf killed her human husband after she sent here son here. How much more of a disgrace could she be to our Pack.”
Rex bit his tongue when the younger boys spoke about what their fathers had said. They were just repeating what they’d heard from their parent. No reason to take my anger out on them. The first set of adult conversation he picked up on wasn’t so bad. Kind of shocked him and put more determination to refrain from falling under the control of Mr. Chamberland. Wished it was the second one that hadn’t pushed me over the edge.
“Was it not disgraceful enough that she left us to the hands of her brother’s hatred when she embarrassed her father by sleeping with that human when she was betrothed to that wonderful werewolf. Sending her son back here has done nothing but put a huge strain on him. Did she not care about her child?” The man had said to his wife.
“I’m not sure he will. He’s much stronger than Alpha Chamberland.”
“Doesn’t matter. Law books says he’s ranked at the bottom. He can’t even eat a full meal. It won’t take long before Alpha Chamberland has him in his dungeon and under his control. Then what do you think he will do with all that power.”
“I’m sure he will use it to aid us, just like his mother would have done for us. I knew Rene. She was a wonderful woman. She would have taught her son to take care of those weaker than him. His wolf might not be able to lead us, but he will not turn his strength on us, either.”
The woman was right. Rex would do what he could to aid the people here. He wasn’t sure how, but he hoped to find a path that led him into helping these wolves avoid Mr. Chamberland’s authorative control.
“Look at him standing back there. He’s nasty as hell. What gives him the right to come in here and take our food. His mother disgraced herself, twice. No wonder her father kicked her out of the pack. If I had been Alpha Chamberland, I would have forgone his father’s written word to teach the bastard about his heritage.”
“Least Alpha Chamberland is going to get him inside the dungeon before long. How long do you think it will take? One day? Two?”
Dugeon? What the fuck? Rex would not go into any such place. His would take the half wolf leader out before hand.
“What are you looking at you smug bastard? Your mom not teach you what your place was?” The man sneered at him. “That’s right. She was a hoe that spread her legs for humans.”
Rex lunged, shifting in mid-air, landing on top of the werewolf, gripping his neck with his fangs. The room grew silent, besides some chairs scraping the floor. Rex did not make a move to rip the man’s throat out. He simply held him still. The man did not make a move. He knew who was the more dominate wolf and when to submit.
A warm scent of pepperiment and salt filled my nose as hand came to rest on the back of my neck.
“Rex, you need to release Allen before the Alpha gets here.”
Larry. We might have released him from being our mate, but our wolf still viewed him as ours. His words were kind and caring, but worry clung to them, but Rex would not let the weasel of a wolf up without an apology from him.
“Please, Rex.”
“What is going on here?”
Mr. Chamberland’s voice boomed through the room, causing the guy between Rex’s teeth to grin up at him. He might think he had the upper hand since his Alpha was there, but there were still tight fangs around his neck. It only took a small tug to rip his throat out.
“Larry, get that bastard off of Allen’s throat.”
“Alpha, if I pull him off, Allen will not have a throat left.”
“Release him, this minute.” Mr. Chamberland gripped the back of Rex’s neck, squeezing.
Rex tightened his hold on Allen’s neck, causing him to whimper.
Mr. Chamberland snarled in his ear, forcing his power to flow of Rex, but Rex did not submit to him. It was then that Mr. Chamberland softly said, “Release him or I’ll force you inside a cage for the next week without food or water.”
Rex didn’t doubt the man would, but he also didn’t doubt that Mr. Chamberland heard the soft whispers of people speaking about how much more power the child of Rene had than their Alpha. It was good that they saw that, but not either. It would make any punishment he got worse. Mr. Chamberland would want his members to see that he had full control of the lowest rank pack member. It was either rip the man’s throat out to show he would not listen to the man who thought he held power over him, or back down and let others think he was going to toe-the -line. Not an option for him and his wolf.
“Last warning.” Mr. Chamberland snarled.
Rex jerked his head sidewards, slamming into Mr. Chamberland’s face and tossing Allen’s throat across the room. Gasp filled the room as he darted out of the cafeteria and down the hallway to the front door. He jumped out the window and raced down the driveway, only to hear gunshots. One bullet hit beside him, then another, but the third hit in in the side, stinging and knocking him to the ground. It burned and hissed through his entire body, leaving him motionless.
“Did you think I did not have a way to handle wayward wolves.” Mr. Chamberland snarled. “Larry, take him to the cage. Leave the bullet in for the week. Let him see how it feels to have silver course through his system.”
Larry’s arms slipped under him and walked back up to the house. Once inside he made his way into Mr. Chamberland’s office and through a hidden passageway. He laid him inside a wolf size cage and then ran his hand over him.
“Why did you not listen to me?” Larry rubbed his head against his flank. “You are going to be in major pain while that silver words it’s way through your body. Just breath through it and the week will be over it before you know it.” Larry kissed his nose and then stepped back. “I’m sorry for the everything today.”
