Edward’s mind would not accept that answer until he had time to research the new leader. He’d have to reach out to his dad and get the 411 on the man.
“What’s his name?”
“Richard Cashwell.”
My entire world sank. Name was well known. Mr. Cashwell had a reputation of being a by the book kind of guy. He’d brought numerous numbers of offenders to Edward’s dad. When he came, he came with the proper evidence and no one was allowed to leave unless it was to go toe the SpellBinder Jail. What would have made him give up his . . .
“You have to be mistaken.”
“Not.”
“Why would he give up his job and an Enforcer to take over a Coven.” Made no sense. Dad said the man lived for the hunt of criminals. Dad praised the man’s determination and once or twice told me he wished his son was more like him. Edwards was right the opposite of him.
“When was he announced to the Coven?”
“Hasn’t been yet.”
Crap. He’d really landed in it. A new Coven at the same time they were taking on a new leader. Not any leader, but a hardballer one. There was no way the guy would take the note given to him by his father. He’d have to go through the Choosing Ceremony. Damn it.
A phone ding.
“Right. You had somewhere to be.” Edward hopped off the countertop.
“So do you.”
“No I don’t.”
“Coven meeting.”
“I . . . they will not . . .”
“Oh they will require you to be there. Shoot and all.” Richard slapped his legs and stood up. “Good thing I have some of my brother’s sweats with me. He came through here a few weeks ago and left some of his stuff behind. He’s about your height and weight.” Richard took his hand, even though he tried to tug it free, so he followed him down the pristine hallway and into a room. “Let’s get you out of those destroyed clothes. We’ll go and get you some more after the meeting. Until then . . .” He laid him a pair of sweats in his hands and pointed to the left. “Bathroom. After you clean up, we’ll head over to the Coven lands.”
Just what he wanted to do.

Richard did have somewhere to be, but for once he had the option to tell them they had to wait on him. Not like they could do the announcement without him. Mere opportunity that was at his hand wasn’t something he longed for. He’d take it, after all it came about because he reported the current Coven. He knew when he did it, there was no one else among the coven that could step up and take charge of the wayward coven. Over all, the price he had to pay would be in his favor. Sure meant there was no mistake in him finding Edward.
“Why do you say this is a mistake? You felt it.”
“You know this area will not accept us.”
Least Edward did not lie. Most people would have had an extremely hard time accepting a all male pairing, but didn’t matter anymore. He was going to change all that. Was the first task on his long list of jobs. More and more male pairing were sprining up on the Eastern half of the world. Most were being mistreated and having to flee to the Western states. The higher ups were not happy and had sent out several undercover SpellBinders to weed out the Coven that were not confining to the new laws of the Covens. He’d landed in the small coven who not only refused to accept the new laws on pairings, but were also living by the old ways of punishment. A way of life that went out of style some fifty years ago. Richard had not been sure why no coven member had not gone to the higher ups, but he had soon as he was taken to task for being late to one meeting. Only took one time for him to be threatened with a whipping to put his ass in gear. Took him another month or two to gather the evidence of what was going on and another month to persuade people to testify on their own behalf. Once all that was done, the higher up had gone into their usual meetings, taking their sweet old time to come up with an answer. Not one Richard liked, but should have been one he expected. Part of him had assumed he’d be stuck with the Coven, but . . .
“Why you say that? It’s the law.”
“Wasn’t a fool. Came here with the knowledge of what the Coven was like. You’ve lived been in the coven longer than me.”
Edward spoke as if that said it all. And it should have. “Things are not the same around here. And why would you come to a coven if you knew they lived in the old ways when they are new laws in place?”
“Old ways!” Edward sat up taller. “There was nothing of that mentioned in all the papers I received from the Coven leader.”
“Why would there have been? He was breaking the laws.”
Richard saw the defeat written all over his other half’s face. “What brought you here?”
“Why are things not the same here?”
“Nice avoidance.” Richard took the cloth from Edwards leg, tiliting it right then left. “Healed up. Sorry about Rex.”
“My own fault.” Edward sighed. “I was running from life. Now, why are things changing here.”
“The coven was reported to the higher ups and a new leader has been appointed.”
“Is he worse or better than the old one?”
“Better.”

What was he doing? He could not hold Edward hostage, even if his mind screamed for him to. Richard had more sense than that. Didn’t he. Normally.
The tall, slender man beside him jerked his arm, but Richard refused to release his grip. Sometimes it was great to be strong. Most SpellBinders were, but the man next to him was not. What had happened to his genes? More importantly how had the two of them been paired together. Was not heard of. Not in his neck of the woods. Area 2 was one of the smallest areas among the United States. Was made up of only five or six Covens. All lived in different manners, most of which I despised, but he made a promise to his mom. One he would not break. Even if she had him promise so that he would settle down and have some children. Not like she didn’t know he preferred men. He was not the only one of his Coven to refuse to go through the Choosing Ceremony. First, but not the last. Four others had. People had not understood their reasoning, or cared. All they’d saw was fellow Coven members refusing to obey. It had taken him reaching out to his father, which he never did, to keep his status among the Coven. People had not taken kindly to his actions, but they could not go against an order from the Chief of Covens. Richard despised his father, but he was not above using his status. Last resort only.
“Let me go. Now.”
“No.” Richard walked them through the door, ignoring the sexy man’s protest. Least he did not make a huge show. Would not have set well with the shelter operators.
“I don’t have time for this.” Edward’s other hand came to rest over his. Next thing Richard knew a huge sting swarmed his arm.
“Shit.” He released Edward and shook his arm. “What did you do?”
“Got myself free.” Edward stuck his head in the air and spun around, making his way to the side of the shelter.
“Where are you going?”
“Away from you.”
Great. A stubborn partner. Just what Richard needed. His life was spinning out of control as it was. He did not need the man who belonged to him to be so . . . Sexy. Stubborn. Strong willed. Determined. All the things that would fit well with him. Any other time.
“Will you at least talk to me?” Richard rounded the corner, stopping dead in his tracks.

Chapter 6
Electricity jumped back and forth, drawing a deep breath from Edward. There was only one thing that could caused such a reaction, but it wasn’t possible. Just wasn’t. It wasn’t heard of. Not below the Virginia Line. Nope. It was a northern and western Coven aspect. It was the one reason it had sucked that his new job had been in western part of North Carolina. It’s also why his dad gave him an hour-long lecture about him being an immature young man who was sowing his wild oats in the wrong part of the world. Dad had not gotten that there were no wild oats being sowed. His eldest son was simply moving on with his life after Alex decided it was time for him to move to the next phase of his life and that did not include a man. He was not going to disappoint his family by being his true self. Alex decided to prove his devotion to his family by going through the Choosing Ceremony. Edward had tried for half a year to let the deception pass him, but it never did. All that happened when he ran across Alex and his new wife was pure rage. That was why he’d found a new job and left the area he’d always lived in. His dad might not have been around to aid him growing up, but he always made sure his children and his wife had all they needed, even if he had very little time to do with them. Besides to knock my mom up.
Edward did not need to see the smile on the hunk’s face to know that he knew what was happening between them. Nope. He could feel his excitement and pleasure at the idea of having ran across him. There were also confusion, not so much because of him being paired with a man, but because he had not picked up on him being a . . . Crap.
“You are . . . How did I not . . .”
Man alive. Someone needed to slam a stake upside his head. He should have gone to the Coven to start with. If he’d not been trying to keep a low profile and away from the Coven as much as possible then things would have been different. He would have been introduced to every member. Would have known the man upon sight. One thing left for me to do.
He went to sidestep the man and make his escape, but fingers curled in his shirt, holding him in place. The SpellBinder in front of him was strong. Tall. Handsome. Clean cut blond hair. A slender jawline that had Edward wanting to place small kisses over them.
None of those thoughts mattered. He had to get away from the guy. Time to figure out his plan. What he would do next. There was no way he could . . .
“We have lots to discuss.” The hunk said as he took his arm and stirred him towards the doorway of the shelter that had been setup for the people of his apartment complex.
“We do not.” Edward tried to pull his arm free, but it did no good. The man had a major grip on his arm and was not going to release him. That sent shards of heat over his body, but also had his stomach churning.
“We do. Come on, let’s get out of here.”
“No.” Edward dug his heels into the cement floor. “Release me. Now.”
The hunk froze, but did not release him.

Chapter 5
The words up and out of his mouth before he knew what was taking place. His Coven leader would kick him in the shin. He’d have good reason. It was not sound reason to invite a human to stay with him. He had a secret to keep. Big one. One that did not just affect him. If Edward found out what he was then . . .
“Thanks, but . . . I could not impose on you. My friend will put me up.”
Richard wasn’t sure if he was pleased or upset. His cock knew which one he was, but . . . a man could not think with his dick. Too many did, but not something he usually did.
“I’ll just wait around and ensure you have a place to go.”
What was up with him? Was he desperately trying to get the man to come home with him? Why? It did not matter. He’d put the question out there and was ensuring that the man took him up on the offer. If it was needed. It was needed. Richard needed him in his home. He wasn’t sure why.
“Not necessary, but thanks.”
Richards arm blocked the young man’s path when he stood. Soon as there was contact a bolt of electricity arced between them. Fire zoomed up and down his body, jumping back and forth between them. My blood froze, but it soon soared to the temperature of the fire he’d been pulling people from earlier.
“Shit.”
Couldn’t say anything to his response. My mouth was stuck to the roof of my mouth as my body burned. It wasn’t a normal reaction, nor was the electric current. Richard knew what both sensations meant. One cleared up quite a few things. The other . . . clear to him as well, but he wasn’t sure why. Or what to do about it. Or how to undo what happened. Or if he could. Knowing his luck . . . He was stuck.
“You are . . . How did I not . . .”
Richard’s fingers curled in Edward’s shut covered shirt as he went to step back. There was no way he was letting the man run. He might not understand completely what was going on, but he knew the man was not getting away from him. Not know. Not ever.
