Chapter 8

The walk back to the van, which they’d hidden just inside the tree line, was way shorter than I thought. “Thought I went further than that?”

“Human feet are slow.” Jackson snorted.

“Hush it.” Special Agent Preston Clarkson thumped Jackson on the back of his head. “Behave or I’ll make you stick your head out the window.”

“You would not.”

“Try me.”

My feet halted and I doubled over, holding my stomach with both hands. It’d been years since I’d seen someone other than me and John good around. It warmed me from the inside out and gave me the humor I needed to proceed with what was taking place around me.

“Glad I amuse you.” Jackson slammed and then there was a slamming door.

“Ignored him, Boy.” Hands ran through the my hair down to my neck, gripping it tight, squeezing. “Ready to get back in the van so we can get back to my territory?”

Territory? Right. Werewolf leader. Werewolf. Shit. What was I doing thinking about werewolves? I mean I saw it. Felt it on my back. Damn it all to hell. I needed my Master. John would never have let me get so involved in this mess.

“Come on, Boy. In the van.”

Without thinking my feet moved and I was inside the back again, but this time Special Agent Preston Clarkson was sitting beside me on the bench.

“What are you doing?”

“Making sure you stay calm, Boy.”

Other words, ensure I don’t jump from the van again. Hadn’t been the wisest move. Guess not. On my own behalf, I had not know they were werewolves. Lord have mercy. That sounded so fucking strange.

“We’ve got a three hour drive going the backroads.” Jackson fired up the van and pulled back onto the road. “Baring no more unexpected stops.”

“Gives us time to get to know one another.”

Did not know how much more I wanted to know about the spot I was in. Looked as if I was trading one running from a bad guy into having to run from two and on my own. I was no good at doing this. I would be caught by one or both within hours of leaving them. All I had done by leaving with Special Agent Preston Clarkson was trade in and up my trouble. Wasn’t it?

“You will love my homeland. It’s full of woodland to explore in wolf form an - -“

“I’m not wolf.”

“You will be soon as we complete the bonding. I mean now that you are single, I assume that we will - -“

“You think . . . There is no way in hell that I am becoming a wolf. End of story.”

Chapter 7

“When I was assigned to go undercover to gain my way up the ranks in Mr. Julian’s men to discover how he kept finding your safehouse location, I noticed who you were to me. I knew then I had to get you to safety. I went right to work on making sure that I could do so. It took me way longer to do so than I expected and you and John took off on your own. I had no idea what I was going to do with John when you discovered who I was to you, but I knew we’d figure it out. Knew we could figure anything out. We were meant to work as one. Be one. It was destined.”

Had he expected me to follow that half-witted explanation?

“Preston, man” Jackson chuckled, “you left over half of the shit out.” He walked up to us and patted Special Agent Preston Clarkson’s shoulder. “let me help you out, buddy.”

“What he meant is that when he saw you, him and his wolf side knew that you two were destined to be together for the rest of your lives. That made it his responsibility to take care of you. Protect you. From anyone and everything, including Mr. Julian, which he could do. More than do, since he runs the largest pack in the Eastern US, but to do that he had to get you into his area and Mr. Julian liked to keep you in the Midwest and when you guys went on the run, you stayed on the Western side of the states. So . . .”

I listened as Jackson went on to explain how Special Agent Preston Clarkson used his FBI assignment to track me down while he continued to move up in the ranks so he’d be there when Julian caught up with us. Special Agent Preston Clarkson jumped in after that and went on about how he had not though Julian would manage to kill either of us. He had not wanted that to happen. Even thought he knew we where to be together he did not want to take the man I was in love with away from me. He just wanted to ensure I was protected and cared for.

Wasn’t sure how I felt about any of what he said. Sure made no sense to me. I mean . . . Okay, I believed in love at first sight. Me and John knew from the get-go that we were meant for one another. Lived a long love filled life, even while on the run. Couldn’t say that was anything more than destiny there. What got me the most was that Special Agent Preston Clarkson turned furry and howled.

“Is that why you keep calling me boy?”

“Not really.” He replied. “Most born alphas are dominate by nature and that spills into every aspect of their lives. Even our sex lives. It is not uncommon for an alpha to participate and live a life full of dominate/submissive. I can tell you are a natural born submissive.”

He was right about that. He was also right about me being drawn to him calling me boy. For more than the natural born aspect. His voice drove me up the wall, in a good way. Made me desire even though I just lost John. What did that mean? Did it mean . . . I couldn’t . . .

“I can’t think about any of this know. Just get me to safety.”

“That we can do.” Special Agent Preston Clarkson replied as he waved his hand towards the path that took us to the van.

Chapter 6

Wasn’t possible. Hadn’t seen it. Nope. Going insane. Finally. Knew years of running from Mr. Julian would drive me there. Last straw had been him killing John. There was no way in hell that a man could go from a wolf to a human.

“Here,” Special Agent Preston Clarkson went to take my arm, but I jerked it away from him.

“Don’t touch me.” Ever.

“Fine.” He held his hands up. “But please sit down before you fall over. You are paler than a white sheet.”

What did he expect? He’d just been a wolf? A wolf, damn it. Know he was a man. Man in the same clothes as before.

“I know this is a huge shock to you. More than most can take in.” Boy was he right there. Not taking it in. “But you are stronger than most or I would not have shown you. Yet.” Yet? What did that mean? He was always going to show me? Why? “I can’t explain why you are so special, not yet, but you will learn in time. First, we have to get you to safety. And we are not far enough away from Mr. Julian for that to be the case.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.” I turned and began to walk towards the road.

“You know he will catch up to you.”

He would, but what did it matter. I had nothing left to live for. John was gone. I had no home. It’d been taken years ago. My mom and dad was gone. John’s as well. No brothers or sisters. It was just me. No one would miss me. Or care that I was gone. Just easier if I give up the run and let Mr. Julian catch me and do as he wish with me. Sure better than whatever these . . . . where they people? Who knew. Whatever they are, had planned for me. Sure weren’t FBI Agents.

Warm hands touched my arm, making me jump a foot away and spin around.

Special Agent Preston Clarkson, if that was his name, stood there. “Just give me five minutes.”

“Why so you can lie to me again?”

“I have not lied to you. Not once.”

“You are no FBI Agent.”

“I am.”

No waver in his voice. Quick answer, but no sense of falseness there. He either believed he was, or he was. Damn it, which was it? Which do I believe? What would five minutes hurt?

“Fine. Not a minute more.”

Chapter 5

“I’d stay still if I was you.”

Damn. Jackson. “You sicked dogs on me.” Where did they get them from?

The dog on my back, that was licking the back of my neck, huffed.

“Don’t think he liked that comment.” Jackson snorted. “Can’t say I blame him. I don’t partically like it either.” He moved around so that all I saw was his muddied sneakers. “If . . . My partner gets off your back, will you sit up and be a good little boy?”

“Not anyone’s boy.”

“Fine. Fine. Not into that shit anyway. Will you remain seated until Preston . . . Just sit there and be good.”

“Like I have any other choice.” I sucked at escaping. It’s why John always made the plans and led us when we had to leave in a rush. He knew the best way to handle everything. Me, I’d get lost in a town we lived in for several months.

The weight lifted off my back, allowing me to scramble onto my knees. The dog . . . shit. Not a dog. “You sicked a wolf on me.”

The wolf snorted and moved between me and Jackson. He looked back at Jackson who gave a curt nod to the animal and moved further back. Next thing I knew there was a huge white mist inbetween us. I waved my hand to dispurse it, only for it to fade away.

I gasped. Pointed. Tried to ask questions, but nothing came out, but grunts. The wolf was gone. Special Agent Preston Clarkson was there. Not sure how long all three of there stood there in silence before I managed to say something. Stupid as it was.

“Where’d the wolf go?”

Trade In and Up Chapter 4

Hi,

Hope everyone's New Year started off on a good foot. Mine has been good so far. Since things have settled down from the holiday and NaNo, I'm going back to making two post a week. (Unless there's an unexpected reason, or sickness that comes up.) So this week, there will be one today, and one Wed. just like in the past.

Hope your imagination can soar when you read.

Julia

Chapter 4

Why did he keep saying that?

“Now, tell me what caused these to mare my Boy’s pretty face.” he wiped away the straggling tears.

“Not your boy.” Maybe if I said it enough he’d quit saying it. “What do you think? The love of my life was shot in the head. I went over a bridge in a car. All but drowned. Did, and was brought back to life, only to come face to face with the man who wanted me dead. Then someone who says he’s FBI steals me away in some teched out van with a manic driver.”

The arms around me tightened, but what I saw bothered me more than the strange arms around me that sent warmth through me. Somewhat. Jackson’s eyes in the rearview mirror told another story. Not sure what about those dull brown eyes that told me something about what I said was not the truth, but something wasn’t. Not much to not be. Other than them being FBI agents or them taking me to safety.

Knew I’d been stupid as fuck to believe they were FBI agents. Special Agent Preston Clarkson might have the credentials, but . . .  I wiggled until I was out of his arms and scooted away from him.

“What’s wrong, Boy?”

“Stop calling me that.” Snapping wasn’t what I meant to do, but it’s what I did.

“You know what respect is. I expect it, even know.”

“Fuck you.”

“Comfort time is over.” Special Agent Preston Clarkson got up and made his way back to the front.

Once he was back in his seat, I scooted to the end closest to the back door. I waited until we came to a stoplight and then watched them. Soon as I knew ours was about to turn green I threw the doors open and jumped out. Took off running right towards the woods that sat on the left. If I could get lost in them.

No car doors slammed. No shouts. No tires squealing. No other sounds of them coming after me. Didn’t have time to look back and see what was taking place. Had to keep running, putting space between us and them. No sense of where I was, or where I was going, but getting lost in the woods seemed smart. Not lost so much as making circles. I had a pocket knife to mark the trees with to keep up with the path I took, so I did not get lost. Once I found a nice place to hide out in, cave or thicket of bushes. After some time passed, I could come back out retrace my steps back to the road and find a town. Not sure what I would do then. I had nothing but the cash in my wallet. My bank cards were of no use. If I used them then they’d be able to track me in seconds.

A loud howl rippled through the air, causing me to pause.

Shit. Wolf? Dog? Either did not sound friendly. I had no way to defend myself. Had to find - -

Something slammed into my back, knocking me flat on my stomach.
