Richard
grunted as he lifted his led feeling body from Jason. “You okay?”
“Squashed.”
Jason huffed then jumped from the gurney and rushed to his side. “You aren’t,
though.”
“What
are . . .” Jason patted his back a couple of times then spun him around. “Stop
that.” Richard slapped at Jason’s hand as it came down towards his chest.
“What’s up with you?”
“You
were on fire.”
What!
Hadn’t felt any heat. Other than what blazed around him.
“Get
that jacket off.”
“Check
the guy out. I’m fine.” Long as my coat was not flaming.
“Always
work first.” Jason snorted and began doing a preliminary check of the guy
they’d brought from the fireline.
As
the two of them worked to get the guy ready for transport, all Richard could
think of was the beauty that he’d allow to leave on his own instead of going to
the hospital. He should have forced the man to go. The building had literally
fallen down around him. Not shocking. The fire was right next to his apartment.
There was no telling what kind of internal damage the man had sustained. He
should have forced the issue about him going to the hospital and getting check
out. Least everyone was being transported to the same shelter. Made it easier
to track him down after the scene was clear.
“We’re
ready to go.” Jason said from the front of the ambulance. “hang on.”
Words
Richard despised. Jason was a great guy, bit young, but he did not know how to
drive the ambulance without tossing him around. Richard had just enough time to
grab onto the gurney to keep it still as the ambulance pulled out behind
another one. Lights were flashing and sirens blaring as they raced down the
road towards the hospital. Not like it was going to matter much. The guy they
had in their bus was not going to make it. He had over ninety percent body
burns. Third-degree. Least Richard could hope for was that the man’s family had
time to come in and say goodbye.
