Chapter
2
“What
took you so long, Richard?”
He
watched as the older man assisted the sexy, blond haired, way to skinny man
towards the waiting crowd.
“You
know him?”
“No.”
“You
look like you just let your best friend walk into the blaze down the street.”
“You
two quit chit-chatting.” Captain Alex patted the side of the ambulance. “Get a
move on.”
“Yes,
Sir.” Jason fired up the ambulance and threw the huge machine into drive. “Damn
smoke is killing my nose.”
“Know
it.” He took one more look in the rearview mirror, hunting the beauty he’d
hated to leave behind. What was up with that feeling of dread? Not dread.
Longing. Not only that, but a need to protect. Guard. Oversee. Ensure his
safety. And no matter what the young man said, he was not okay.
“You
sure you don’t know him?” Jason glanced his way as they came to a stop behind
the line of ambulances. “Looks like they called us all in.”
Jason
was dim-witted most of the time, but that sounded worse than anything the man
had ever said.
Richard
climbed out of the ambulance and took in the scene. There were EMS guys all
over the place and transporter bed rushing as close as they could get to the
fire, taking extracted men, women, teens, and children from firefighters. The
sight kicked him into gear. He was around the back of the ambulance, extracting
his bed before Jason was able to take in the scene.
He
was halfway to the stay behind line before Jason caught up to him with the huge
EMS bag.
“We
are getting them away from the fire before we begin our examination.” Travis
shouted.
Man
was great at his job. He’d been his partner before Jason was hired on. Hated
being stuck with a rookie, but least Jason knew his secret and he did not have
to force himself to hide his extra strength and sense of smell. Both came in
handy. Normally. Scent wasn’t going to aid him for several days thanks to the
smoke he was inhaling.
“Let’s
rock and roll.” Jason said, earning himself a couple of sour expression from
the other EMS workers.
“Calm
it down.” Richard snapped at Jason. “This isn’t a scene to be chipper at. Get
serious.”
“Right.”
Jason muttered, but took on a straight lipped expression and began strapping in
the first man the firefighter laid on their bed.
If
Jason felt anything for the man or not, Richard didn’t care. What he cared
about was him doing his job and without cracking jokes. Quicker he could get
the people treated and transported the better. He wanted all the victims taken
care of as fast as they needed it. There would be many deaths from the fire.
Hell, the man in front of him was barely hanging on. His arm was missing and
the rest of his body was covered in what had to be third degree burns. For
once, Richard was thankful he could not smell. Burnt flesh stunk worse than
smoke.
“Code
10.” A firefighter shouted. A few of my colleague froze, but Richard knew what
that meant, and he motioned for Jason to get hold of the underside of the
gurney as the same firefighter shouted. “Get them away from here.” A
firefighter shouted.
We’d
made it to the ambulance just as another explosion rocked the raging inferno.
Jason
shielded the man from flying debris as Richard threw himself over Jason. No way
was he going to let the barely twenty-year-old get harmed. His Coven Master
would slice him in half.
