Chapter 30
Rex turned the corner into the kitchen, stopping
short and backing back up without making a sound. Not knowing the room caused
him to bump his elbow into the wall. With a powerful Alpha standing in the
Kitchen, even if his huge arms were wrapped around Aspen as their lips did the
wild tango, heard the faint thump in made.
“Rex,” Aspen’s face reddened a bit, but he did not
pull away from Alpha Widows when he tugged him into his side. “Your lessons
over for the day?”
“Yeah. Sorry I interrupted.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Alpha Widows leaned his chin
on Aspen’s shoulder. “It was time you found out about us.”
“It’s new.” Aspen’s words flowed from him fast and
shaky. “I promise. I was never unfaithful to your mom. I remained devoted to her
while we were apart. I never would have betrayed the love we had for each other.
Could not have. I promise. Please believe me.”
“Shh.” Alpha Widows whispered against his cheek. “I’m
sure he does. Don’t you.”
Why would he have? Mom had remained away from him and
started another life even though she was pregnant by him. She never once
reached out to him. She could have. She never told me about him. Had plenty of
time to do so. Eighteen years. There were no half siblings, but mom and dad, or
the man Rex knew as Dad, had sex. He heard them a time or two.
“Why would you?”
“I loved her. She was my mate.”
Rex got the love part, but that would have faded over
time. Should have. Right? For most it would have. Among the humans, at least. Could
be different among the Warlocks. Mom made it look like it wasn’t the case among
the Werewolves.
“She was my mate.” Aspen repeat of the comment was so
low and much like a duh comment.
“You speak like that is a given.”
“It is.” Both of them replied.
Rex growled when both of them chuckled at him, but
they ceased and pointed at the table. He sat and settled in for their
explanation.
“Mates are an amazing find. You never give up on
mate. You know how you feel for Fabin’s know, can you imagine not spending the
rest of your life with him?”
He couldn’t. Fabin had to be in his life. There was
no way around that. Life would be horrible without him. Just being away from
him overnight had been . . . He’d woken twice with the dire need to run to his
mate and check on him. He’d actually picked up the phone five times to text
him. Only being afraid of looking pushing and clinging had kept him from doing
so. Looked like it he’d been acting normal after all. There was no way my mind
and body would have survived being away from him for more than a day or two
without seeing or hearing his voice. That being the case, how had . . .
“How did you manage it, Aspen?”
“It was . . . most difficult and challenging and debilitating
thing I’ve ever been through.”
“There were many days and nights that he leaned heavy
on his father and grandfather for aid. There were potions concocted to aid the
pain and reduce the need that coursed through him. PI were hired to try and
find her when I was not able to catch a trace of her scent.” Alpha Widows took
hold of Aspen’s hands. “Many, many nights we sat up together, talking about
your mother. The past times they had together. Tossing out ideas of what she
was up to. Where she was. How she was doing. If you were okay. Your father never
once gave up on locating either of you. He exhausted every means he, his family,
and I could think of. It hurt every one of us to see him suffer.”
Wasn’t sure what I expected to hear when this conversation
started, but that was not it. How did one respond to such. Thanks didn’t fit.
Sorry didn’t fit. Wish you had not suffered sounded lame. He needed something that
showed he cared and accepted all that the man went through. Something that gave
him proof that his journey of trials and pain was not wasted. What . . . Ah,
yes. That was it.
“Dad, you being unfaithful to my mom never crossed my
mind.”
A huge, bright smile lit the room, only to be dimmed
by a loud half howl, growl. Alpha Widows jumped to his feet as Rex leapt up,
knocking the chair back. He raced from the room, taking the corner of the
hallway, barely missing the table that sat at the edge. Just as he came around
the corner, Fabin marched from Aspen’s office. Back straight. Face fiery red.
Teeth were fangs. But what had Rex’s hands going to his chest was how his lips
were down and those deep sexy dark eyes were dim.
Rex snatched him by his arms, tugging him into him,
throwing his arms around him. “What is wrong, baby?”
