Chapter 3

 “Saw the threatening jackass.”

Also blunt Mateo made Javis’ heart sing. He never pulled any punches with what he thought about a single person or how they handled a matter. He knew when to dig in deep on a threat to him or when someone was being tossed under the rug. That one statement told Javis just what Mateo thought of the man who spilled all the truthful vile about Javis.

“How do you wish to handle this? Straight through the media or on the down low?”

“Down low. Let’s get all the dirt we can before we face-off with him.”

“Always the best to go at him with amunition.”

“And away from the media.”

Javis didn’t mind the media, in some areas it held just what the world required, but when someone spilled vileness about him, he needed it only when he had the proof to disbute the bastard. That required indepth details on the man and facts that would break what he said. Hard to do when what he said was the truth. That being the case, meant he had to break the man’s feeling on him and have him change his feelings about him in front of the right people at the right time. Didn’t mean the bastard had to do so willingly.

“Let’s see what we can find on him.” Mateo clasped his hands and pressed them out away from his chest. “The computer might give us a starting place, but I’m sure I’ll have to do some manual digging as well.”

“How long will that take?”

“Unsure. Varies from case to case.”

Words he’d heard before. Many times when Mateo’s team came into play. Irked him then and right then . . . Pissed him the fuck off.

“Deadline would be best.”

“Can’t give you one.”

“Can, but won’t.”

“Right.”

“Why?”

“Because I might have to break it or change it. Both of which would tick you off. Not a great thing to have a Vampire, espcially the Commander and Cheif, mad at you.”

Words sounded full of truth and solid as any thing he’d ever heard before. Problem was . . . he knew Mateo was joking with him. Yet, he might not be.

“Here we go.” Mateo turned the computer so it faced me. “Facial Recongiztion id’s him as Enapay Chavos. He’s twenty-five. born to Kyle and Jessica Chavos.” The computer was whipped back around and the keystrokes filled the room as Javis let those three basic facts play over and over in his mind. “There’s a marriage certificate for Kyle and Jessia Chavos, dated some around . . . twenty-five years ago. There is two birth certificates linked to them. One for a Shawn Andrew Chavos who would have been been around 2006 and then there is Enapay Calvin Chavos who is twenty five.” Man had not looked older than eighteen. Had a solid air of youth attached to his rounded face and feathered back red-hair. “Shit. Man has had a hard life.”

“What’s that mean?”

“There are three death certificttes attached to him as well. His paretns and his brother.”

“What happened?”

“A fire left behind a seventeen year old Enapay Chavos.”

If his parents died when he was seventeen that meant . . . eight years ago. Right after he inserted the Vampire Choice Law. It had been one of his first three Government Laws he put into effect when he became Commander and Cheif. First has been to change his status to the Commander and Cheif. Second had been to divide the States into Sectors that would be lead by Vampires, revealing his kind to the entire world. That meant that his paretns had to have chosen a Vampire or been changed by him. And he knew every name and face of the people who he sired. They were not his.

“Who do they belong to?”

“No one.”

“What?”

“Apparently . . .” Mateo pointed at the screen, “there was nothing left of their bodies to save.”

“How did this guy survive a fire that eliminated his entier family?”

“He was at a friends house.” Mateo shook his head. “Kid . . . wouldn’t call him that. He’s a genius. There’s an article that was written five years ago in his hometown newspaper about how he got himself emacipated four months after their deaths and finished school two months later to go onto MIT and got his Master in Engineering and minored in Computer Science. All within four years.”

“That’s a lot of basic info. Can yoiu go deeper?”

“Sure. Just not on your computer.” Mateo sat back in the chair. “Best I can tell you from this one is that he disappears from this point on.”

“No one disappears these days. Social Meida is everywhere.”

“You are right, but . . . I’ve ran the best scan I can on this computer to search every social media site possible for his face, but there’s no sighting of him in over the last year and half.”

“That’s . . . strange.”

“I’m sure he’s out there. Just need to get to my computers and dig down deeper. More time. Wherever he’s been hiding, I can find him and his hiding place. Promise.”

“How much time will it take?”

“Don’t konw. Day. Two. Week. Month. Get it done as fast as I can.” He slapped his legs and got up. “Promise.”

He knew Mateo would. Man never failed him. He wouldn’t start. Problem was . . . he’d told Julian to setup the press conference. Julian woudl be pissed at him for changing his mind. More so for telling him he was going to remain out of sight indefinitely. Let the guy continue to spill his vileness until he was ready to strike back. Juilan would throw one of his world renouwned fits, but he’d get over it.

“Get to work. I’ll hold off Juilan.” Unsure how. Man could be a feen when he desired to get ahead of a preceived major issue.
