Chapter 11

Right. Leak what I am. Draw him to me. Make it so we meet. Once again he was shaping my life for his own purpose. He’d done so since he created me. Why not continue doing so?

“First, though, we must bring you home and get you settled in.”

Home? I was home. Wasn’t I?Not really. Not anymore. Soon as Ranko reported the decision of the mirror I would be null and void among the Inccubus community. If I remained among them I had to shift my life to the Graveyard.

“Take me wherever I need to go.”

“Step through the mirror.”

“You will do no such thing.” Ranko said form the doorway.

“He has no other choice.” Grandma Sto said from behind him. “It is his new life. Let him get it started.”

“Grandma, hush it. This is not what mom would have wanted.”

“She made herself very clear what she wanted.” I took in a deep breath and watched the entire mirror take on a silvery shimmer before the little particles parted left and right. “Time for me to do as she wanted.” Much as it sucked, I’d been born to belong to someone else. Never be my own person. Might as well go ahead and get it going so I can figure out my life and how it will be.

“You don’t have to do this.” Ranko laid his hand on my shoulder. “You can stay here among the outskirts and come and visit us often.”

“I’m not putting that kind of stain on the family. Best I just do as the mirror proclaimed.” No Sto had ever gone against the mirror and I wouldn’t be the first. “Love you all. Take care.”

I gave them each a small, most likely fully visible fake smile then stepped through the mirror.

Disgraced Magical Being Cover Reveal

 DISGRACED MAGICAL BEINGS

BY
JULIA MATTHEWS

RELEASE DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

A fire ended his dream life years before it should have.

Ja Walker wasn’t dead, neither was the love of his life, thanks to his minuscule amount of Magical Power, but the use of it terminated his life. Magical Beings weren’t allowed to use their skills in front of humans. To save the one that mattered most to him, Ja did the one thing that would get him sent back to the place he waited over fifteen long years to get away from . . . the Magical World. And he wouldn’t be returning to the family who disowned him or the coven that he was supposed to have taken over once he turned twenty-one.

He’d be taken to a coven where he’d be shunned, overlooked, or beaten because he had been sent back to the Magical World. After all, that’s what happened to those who disgraced themselves by breaking the laws. But that was okay with Ja, he’d take whatever punishment came his way as long as the love of his life was alive and well.

Ja resigned himself to a life of being invisible, but he never expected what happened when Elder Robert brought him to the Clive Coven.

Chapter 10

The mist hissed and shouted, “I wanted my chosen one first and foremost. For all my life, not one second passed that I did not wonder what she was doing, if she was happy, how she was fairing, how you were fairing, if you held my face, my eyes, my lips, what sports you played, what parts of me you held. I gave all that up for her, because I decided it was best to give my chosen what she longed than to make her miserable so I would be happy.”

“But you still chose to ensure you got me out of the bargain, didn’t you.”

“It wasn’t only because of what I’d been told you were prophecies to be.” The voice dropped into a low whisper. “I wanted some part of me and my chosen mate to survive this world even if we were not together. Was that so wrong? I never thought she’d withhold that fact from you. Never thought I wouldn’t know she died.”

Sadness. Sure enough, it lurked in those last few words. Might not be able to see it on a face or see it in a set of eyes, but it was more than clear in how low and soft his tone was, and how there was a hiccup in those last two words. I might not like to think he had cared about me, but there appeared to be feelings for my mom, least I could give him that much.

“Are you ready to join me in the Underworld? We have lots to plan.”

“Plan?”

“Yes. It is time to announce you to the Underworld as my son.”

“What does that mean?”

“It is like a . . . what would your world call it?” I could all but imagine the cloud figure tapping his fingers against his chin as he searched fro the right word. “Debutant Ball.”

“A what?”

“Isn’t that what the women held to annouce themselves ready to chose a husband?”

“I’m not a woman. I’m an Incubus.”

“Right, but still I have to announce you are ready to select a husband.”

“Thought I was this chosen person. Why put me through such a charade?”

“Have to have a reason for the Moloch to make an appearance with his son, don’t we?”

“And he’d do that for some mixed breed demon who has no clue what it means to be a demon to start with.”

“Once I leak what you Journey Announcement Day revealed.”

Chapter 9

I left Ranko and Uncle Lal in the study, arguing about why Mom had been so selfish. Never heard Ranko speak so hardly about our mom, but understood where he was coming from. She’d left both of us in the dark about a major aspect in my life when it should have been us that were told. Uncle Lal of course swore his sister had her reasons, and I guess mom did, but it made no sense to leave me her son, which would be a man after he faced the Decision Mirror. Grandma Sto stood outside my room, holding a folded up letter. She held it up to me, but I shook my head. Didn’t need to read mom’s words to know what Grandma Sto had said was the truth. One thing I knew about all Sto women, they never lied to their loved ones. Might leave shit out, but outright lie, nope. Not in their DNA. All left for me to do was to man up and move on with what lay ahead of me.

I pushed the door to my room open and watched as the cloud figure swirled in and out of each item on my desk. It looked as if it soaked up the essence of each item it brushed across and through, took in what each item meant to me. Something a father would have done, but why would he have cared when he’d willingly let mom conceive and leave him, taking me away from him to never see me again. How could he have done such? Why would he have done such?

“Ah . . . You are back?”

“Why did you do it?”

“Do what?”

“Bargin with her for me.”

“As much as I longed to have her at my side each day she was away, I knew she would never have been happy beside me. I saw that the few days she was here.” If a cloud could sigh, he had done so, right down from the distortion of the mist in front of the area that formed his mouth area. “While she was here, she felt the draw to be with me, like all chosen ones did, but her heart belonged her with her family and the one her heart desired. Not the one fate deemed fitting for her.”

“Fate can get it wrong then.” I wasn’t sure if that was comforting or not, because whatever the case might be for me, I would still be forced to remain in the Underworld. There would be no returning to my life as a Incubus. Or if I did returned, I’d be sent to the Graveyard Section.

“You have been deemed the one prophesied as the mate to Ez Moloch, your fate is sealed, Nacal. And I can be no prouder.”

“Course not. You accomplished what you wanted from the bargain with my mother. You got what you wanted from her.”
