Chapter 20

What was going on? Who was these guys that was filling the room? Why did they look like him? There were . . . was that . . . it was. Aspen. What was he doing here.

“Rex? You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Doesn’t look like it.”

Hadn’t much happened to him. He’d just been strung up and Alpha Widows came in. The whip had been brought out, but Fabin had . . . That’s right. Fabin had stepped up and stopped anyone from touching him. Wasn’t sure why, but was too. Didn’t want to admit it, but Rex’s wolf did. Rex’s wolf loved the idea of having a true mate. One that he did not have to rebuke to make happy. Rex had not wanted to give up Larry.

“I’d like to know why he has all those abrasions and whelps on his body.” Fabin, or almond sexy eyes, as Rex liked to call him, came up to him and cupped his chin, tilting his head to the left then the right.

Rex’s wolf whimpered, but Rex jerked his chin free and took a huge step back, only to lose his footing thanks to the sprang ankle he’d received the other day during a five on one battle with Mr. Chamberland’s guards. Turned out he was a natural fighter thanks to his werewolf genes, but even he had his limits when the number game came into play.

Warm arms wrapped around his waist, halting his ungraceful fall to the floor.

“What happened to you, my mate?”

Damn, he had not wanted those words to be said in front of so many people, especially his father and whoever else those that resembled him. He still had no clue who the powerful people were, but one thing was for sure they had to be related to him. He just wasn’t sure how. One of them smelt of werewolf while the rest of them held Witch skills, which made more sense than a werewolf.

“Mate?”

“Old Friend,” Alpha Widows voice boomed through the dungeon like a train charging down its tracks. “That’s what we were dealing with when you and the calvary came in.”

“Old Friend?” Rex wasn’t sure who he was questioning. His head was swimming with confusion and his body thrummed with desire and heat from being near his mate. All his body wanted to do was press itself closer to Fabin and seep into his pores, combing themselves for the rest of their lives.

“Yes, my mate. Alpha Widows and Coven Leader Aspen have been friends for all their lives. It is why he asked him to try and discover what was taking place here. He knew something was up, just not what.”

The man that resembled Rex the most, and stood just to the left of Aspen, came forward and laid a hand against Rex’s chest. “I believe it is time that you answered some questions for me.”

“Who are you?”

“Mate, be respectful.”

Took Rex biting the inside of his jaw to keep from smarting off to his mate. He did not even know who was in the dungeon. His mind spun a thousand miles a minute while his body screamed for its mate to take and claim him. His wolf begged to be released so he could present himself to his mate while he bowed to the newcomers that Rex knew nothing about. And his mate wanted him to be respectful. How was he supposed to do all that?

“I think he would, young beta, if he knew who I was.”

Least the man knew part of his state of mind.

“Is that the case, mate?”

Rex lifted an eyebrow and glanced at the hand on his chest. The hand slowly lifted and was held out to him.

“My name is, Werewolf Councilman William Perry.”

Who knew one introduction could provide so much information. Powerful man. And kin to Aspen, so kin to him. How was another question.

“Nice to meet you, Councilman William Perry.” Sure did not want to answer his questions. Was not sure how he would react to me going around the pack law.

“I think there has been some fishiness going on in this pack. Some has been overlooked by Pack Master Combs. Not just during the current reining Alpha Chamberland, but his predecessor.”

Least Councilman William Perry was smart. Let’s see if he would do anything about it. Some higher up talk big and do nothing.

Councilman William Perry faced Mr. Chamberland, glaring wasn’t the right word, but it was clear he was waiting for him to explain his actions. Rex wasn’t sure where it would have been best for Mr. Chamberland to start. There were so many areas to address. Rex himself hoped he started with why he was ranked bottom.

“Fine.” Councilman William Perry turned back to Rex. “Let me tell you what I have been told and then you can fill me in on the rest, but first, let’s take this to the living room.” He faced Larry and waved him towards the door. “Go clear the Pack House of all unnecessary members.”
