Edward
wasted no time. He rounded the corner and used the one talent he had to escape.
“Spirit,
soar me away into your bosom.”
The
night lights swirled around me as the world spun out of control. Edward gripped
the hem of his shirt, like he always did when he borrowed power from Spirit.
Soon as the whirling and flying sensation died down, he looked around to see
where he was.
Large
color stained window panes surrounded him. Cherry pine wood floors rested under
his shut covered shoes. That had him jumping over to the welcome mat.
“Where
am I?”
Vibrate,
abstract art covered the light blue walls. Someone had great taste. Took
someone with money to own a Wassily Kandinsky.
“Whose
house is this?”
He
slid aside the silk style curtain having over the front door window. Thanks to
a porch light he could make out evenly trimmed grass and a very well stocked
herb garden. No car sat in the driveway.
What
to do? He did not recognize the area. Where was he? Didn’t matter. He had to
get out of there before someone came home. Not an easy explanation as to how he
got into the house. Door was locked. Security system working. He could not tell
them he asked Spirit to aid him and ended up in the middle of their hallway.
Dang it. Why was Spirit so unpredictable. It’s why he did not use it. Okay, it
wasn’t Spirit. It was him. He hated studying anything other than academics.
Spirit training was a useless skill in his mind. Much smarter to focus on the
items that would get him into Yale. Get him to the point that he could be an
amazing lawyer. Not that any of that had panned out for him. He had not earned
the scholarship and his parents refused to pay for his education. Told him it was
best if he worked for his own dream. Not the true reason behind their
traitorous way. Nope. It was out of retribution for him refusing to go through
the Choosing Ceremony. Dad might have given me the note that got me out of
going through such, but he did not like doing so. Only reason he had, was to
keep my ass out of trouble. He did not want his name smeared in any kind of
scandal. He had a seat of power to maintain and that meant keeping his nose
clean. His and his families.
Car
lights filled the window.
“Shit.”
He
skirted through the hallway, making sure he did not touch anything. Least
amount of shoot would give him away. He made it into the kitchen before he ran
into a huge black pit bull dog.
Huge
white teeth greeted him as saliva dribbled from his mouth, plopping onto the
floor. Edward looked right, finding a counter blocking his path. To the left
sat a six seater table. Going backwards wasn’t an option. The owner of the
house would be inside before he could reach a window to escape through. Not
that it would do him any good. That would only set off the alarm. Not that
opening the back door wouldn’t do so.
“Damn
it.” He held his hands out in front of him. “Nice doggie. Can you let me slip
by you?” His foot froze in air when the dog lowered his head, readying to
charge. “Come on, let me by, please.”
“He
won’t.”
The
husky voice had him spinning, forgetting the ready to attack dog.
“Fuck!”
Edward screamed as the dog latched onto his leg.
“Heel,
Rex.” The man had scooped him up and sat him on the counter before Edward could
take two breaths.
“No.
Let me down.”
“Stay
there and let me check your leg.”
“No.
I’m covered in shoot.”
“It
will wipe up.”
The
man took hold of his leg and ripped the bottom part of my jeans. He snatched up
the drying towel that rested behind me, pressing it to my leg.
“Barely
broke the skin.” The man shooed Rex away when he came up to his side. “Get, you
mutt.”
“Mutt.”
“Yeah.
He’s a great companion.”
“He’s
huge.” Dangerous. Knew how to protect his home from people who suddenly
appeared in his house. Question was . . . “Why did he not attack until I came
in here?”
“How
did you get here? Hold this.”
Edward
had no choice. The man had taken hold of his hand and slammed it against the
reddening towel.
The
man’s body swayed as he walked over to the tall antique cabinet and opened the
door, extracting a huge first aid kit. He laid it on the table and retrieved
some cause and a needle and threat pack.
“Won’t
be necessary.”
The
man looked my way, smiling. “Right. You going to answer me? You were not that
far ahead of me when you ran from me.”
Ran
fit. Edward had hoped to get far from the man. Not land in his house. Spirit
had a twisted sense of humor.
“Why
did you run from me? Why not tell me your were a SpellBinder?”
The
man glanced at his watch, frowning. “Got somewhere to be. Great. Get going.
I’ll just take my leave.”
“Oh,
no you don’t.” The man was in front of me before Edward could get off the
counter. “You are not going anywhere until we talk this out.”
“You’ve
got somewhere to be. We can talk later.” Much later. Like never.
“My
trip can wait.”
Great.
“Listen, just let me go. Pretend we never met. You know this is not possible.
It is a mistake.”
A
deep, rich chuckle had my cock throbbing, but did not sway him into changing
his mind about the two of them. Nope. There was no way the two of them would be
accepted by the Coven. Not as hard as the Coven leader pushed him about not
have gone through the Choosing Ceremony.
“Mistake.”
A loud huff spoke louder than words. “Not hardly.” The man pulled out a chair
and sat down, leaving Edward no way to move.
