Chapter 4
“Then you are with me,
Sir.”
Sir? Eighteen years old
did not constitute a Sir. What was up with this guy? He sure did not look old
enough to be a friend of mom’s. Wasn’t go anywhere with him, even if he could
have won the hottie of the year award.
“Who are you?”
“Mr. Southern sent me to
bring you in.”
“Mr. Southern?” Mom had
not told me who would be meeting me. Just that someone would. And who brought someone
in from the airport.
“Yes, Sir.” The guy spun
on his heels and made his way toward the sign that read luggage belt. “Come
show me what bags are yours and then we can go.”
“I think I’ll just give
my mom a call.” Rex pulled his phone from his pocket and hit speed dial. Mom
answered on the first ring. “Do you know a Mr. Southern?” his mom said that was
who was supposed to pick him up. She wasn’t to keen on the fact that someone
else had been sent to fetch him, but told him to go with the young man. That Mr.
Southern would send only the most responsible person after him. After her confirmation,
Rex joined the young man and snagged up his three bags. Together they made
their way outside and into a hug parking lot.
“How far away did you have
to park?”
“Half way down.” The
young man said as he looked backwards. “You going to be okay?”
Rex stood up taller and
squared his shoulder. He wasn’t the most fit person in the world. Sure not like
the man that spent hours upon hours in the gym, but he could make it to the
car. He was sure of that. It was just the humidity outside sucking the life
from him.
“Do you not workout on a regular
basis?”
“Not all of us love the
gym.” Rex hefted his tote bag further onto his back and muttered. “Like you do.”
“I do not go to the gym.”
The guy walked in a silence for some time before stopping in front of a beat up
Ford pickup truck. “Let’s put them in the bed and get on the road. We have
a two hour ride ahead of us.”
“Two hours?”
“Yes, Sir.”
Damn it. Hadn’t thought it
was that far from the airport. Not that Rex asked his mom many questions. He’d been
ticked off and stubborn before he left. He should have asked more of his mom.
Just like he should have asked more of the guy who came to pick him up. Least he
could rectify that.
“Sorry, but I forgot to
ask your name.”
“Larry.”
Simple plain name for a
man that stood out among everyone. “Nice to meet you. Where exactly are we
going?”
“Did you mother not tell
you?”
“Somewhat, but not
exactly.” If she had, Rex had not taken it in. all his mind had been focused on
was the fact that his entire Summer had been ruined.
“Then I guess you’re in
for an adventure.”
The tone in the man’s
voice put him on edge, more than fill him with excitement. Wasn’t sure how much
of a good thing that was. Guess, I’d just have to figure that out.
