Chapter 2
Rex sat in protest of
leaving until three in the morning. Mom’s parting words before bed was if I
didn’t get up and pack, that’d the summer would be a smelly one. Rex admitted
defeat at three and made his way upstairs to pack and catch an hour or two
sleep before he had to get up and head to the airport with his mom. Flight wasn’t
going to be a long one, but from all the stories mom told of her childhood home
there’d be nothing but small town living for me for the rest of summer
vacation. Wasn’t sure how many times mom told me how well off I had it to be
living in such a big city and around so many people. Mom’s hometown was some small
backwater country place that sat off in the mountains between the border of
North Carolina and Virginia. Said the closest town was the one known for some
black and white show called Mayberry. Never saw. Didn’t sound interesting.
One thing Rex had done while he sat in protest was talk with Seth and Calvin.
Explain to them why their summer plans had been turned on their heads. Wasn’t
fun being the one responsible for exploding a well laid out plan of attack for the
last summer before college. Wasn’t fair.
“Would you like some water?”
The flight attendant asked as she came to a stop in the aisle beside him.
“No, Thanks.”
Rex’s stomach was upside
down. Not because of flying. He’d done that several times. All their vacation
trips included planes. Nope. It was fact that he was less than half an hour
away from walking into an area he knew no one. Not even who to look for when he
deboarded the plane. All he knew that one of his mom’s childhood friends would
be there to greet him and take him where he would be staying. Then it would a
hotel living for the summer and following the rules laid out by whoever would
take the time to show me around mom’s old haunting grounds. Her words.
The buckle seat belt
light came on. As Rex did so, he took one last look out the side window and
sighed. Long way down. Long way away from home. Every other minute of the
flight he had wondered why he had not listened to Seth and just told him mom
and dad he was going to do as he wished. He was eighteen. Graduated from high
school. Legally he could leave at any given moment. He’d considered doing just
that, but . . . . He did not want to make things worse on his parent’s already strained
relationship. He knew his parents loved one another. Not only that, they were
paying for his college education and if he left there went his education. One of
his lifelong dreams had been to open his own coffee/computer/arts oasis. Seemed
like an odd business, but he believed there would be a great nitch out among
the world for the combination of a place that catered to all three areas. He wanted
to go about it the right way. Legal way. That required education, which meant he
needed money, so he could make money to save up for his dream. He might be
losing out on his last Summer before college, but he would gain his dream in
the end. That was more important. Right? Yes.
“Please exit the plane in
an orderly fashion and thanks for flying with us.”
