Chapter 5
No radio. No talking. Nothing,
but the whooping of the tires and the whizzing of other cars passing by. Oh,
and the oceanic blue eyes darting his way. Not just a dart of curiosity, but
there was some sexual-intense heat floating around among those blue pupils. Rex
would not have minded discovering just how much heat the two of them could
muster up together.
The flirting glances last
throughout the ride until they came to some small town that held a bunch of old
rundown buildings. One of those Larry pulled not and up beside a gas pump that
came from another century. Rex had only ever seen one on television. He would
not have known how to work it.
“What are we doing here?”
“Getting gas. It’s the
last town before we reach Chamberland.”
Chamberland? Didn’t
recall mom saying anything about the town being named after her family. Lord
have mercy, I should have paid better attention.
“If you need to use the restroom
then best do so. We’ve got another forty minutes from here.”
“Forty?” He glanced at
his watch. “You said we had a two hour ride. We’ve been on the road for an hour
and forty minutes.”
“That was just to get our
last turn off.” Larry turned lifted the spigot style handle and stuck it into
the gas tank.
Just where in the hell
was his mom from? He tugged his phone from his backpocket and frowned down at it
when there was no signal.
The car door shut,
jerking him from his mental cursing, until Larry dropped his next huge
bombshell.
“You won’t have no cell
service while you are up here.”
“You mean until we get to
Chamberland, right?”
Larry shook his head.
“What am I to do?”
“There’s lots we could do.”
Larry cranked the car and swung onto the road.
“We could do?”
“Yes, I’ve been assigned
to shadow you while you are in town.”
“Shadow me?” What in the
world? “Mom said her friend was going to . . .”
“Mr. Chamberland, has assigned
me to be your tour guide while you are here this summer.” Larry smiled over at
him. “It will be my honor to accompany you during the daytime.”
There he went again. He
had clearly showed his dislike for same sex coupling, yet . . . he kept
flirting with me. What was going on with Larry? More importantly, what was
going on with him? He kept checking the guy out, even though he knew the man
disliked same sex couples, or despised what he was. Or worse, was so far in the
closest that he openly based people like himself. Either case, he wasn’t
someone Rex mixed with.
