Chapter 6
Rex had held onto the
handlebar for the last thirty minutes. Every since Larry had turned onto a
barely noticeable road. Might as well have been a roller coaster from all the
bumps that bounced Rex around.
“How much further . . .”
Rex’s word died from his
mouth when he saw a nice little cabin appear. Sitting across from it, there was
another one, and a few feet down from it sat another identical one.
“There’s cabins out here?”
“Welcome to Chamberland.”
Larry waved at the woman sitting on the front porch of the cabin on their left.
“That’s Mrs. Timbers. She’s been here since before your mother was born.”
Made no sense. Mom had no
heir about living in such a place. She always loved the city and all the
shopping malls. Had that been why she left Chamberland? Rex would have hightailed
it from here in a heartbeat. He could also see why Larry would be so closed off
about who he was.
“How many people live in
Chamberland?”
“More than you expected.”
Larry slowed down and made a turn onto a smoother driveway.
“How many does that mean?
Two hundred? Five hundred? More?”
“Here we are.” Larry put
the car in park. “Mr. Chamberland will want to see you before I take you to
your cabin. Just wait here.”
