Chapter 25

Hot desire rushed over his entire body as Rex wiggled onto Fabin’s lap, straddling the man. His mind screamed stop, but his body and wolf screamed fuck. Fabin must have been on the same wave length as his wolf and body, because massive hands cupped Rex’s ass, squeezing as he licked and sucked his tongue.

God would he apply such suction if his lips were around a cock? Rex hoped so. Fabin pulled back, causing Rex to whimper.

“You are so sexy.” Fabin leaned his forehead against his. “I did not plan on this.”

Neither did he, but Rex sure loved how their time was going. “Did not get this with Larry.”

A deep growl flowed from Fabin as his arms pressed him against his, picking him, spinning them so Rex’s back was pressed into the couch. His mouth hovered over Rex’s.

Air rushed from Rex’s lungs as he stared up into bright yellow wolf eyes. Sexy as fuck. Scary as fuck. Blood already pumped through his cock, but more raced to it, causing Rex to thrust upwards.

“That’s right.” Fabin’s rough, tightly controlled voice pulled a second thrust from him. “That cock belongs to me.”

Hot moist lips slammed over Rex’s, forcing them apart. Fabin grabbed both his arms and shoved them above his head, holding them there in a tight grip as he rutted against him. Rex reciprocated and increased the fiery fiction between them by digging his fingernails into Fabin’s back.

“What the - -“

“Fabin. Stop!”

Fabin’s dick pressed against his as he whipped his head towards Alpha Widows and Aspen, snarling.

“Mine.”

“Not yet.” Alpha Widow’s calm tone was like a bucket of ice water splashing against Rex’s entire body. Did not feel like it affected Fabin. His cock was still throbbing against his.

“Take a walk and let your wolf cool down. Then come back and you and Aspen can sit down with Rex and work out the necessities of the courtship.”

Courtship? “What the fuck?” He’d not read anything about a courtship in the books.

“I have to explain all this to my son. I have heard from Mixed Supernatural Councilman Alvin Thomas and have directions on how to proceede.”

Proceede? “What’s that mean?”

“That is what we will discuss once Fabin’s and your wolf are able to remain in the same room without . . . Your wolves are calmer.”

Fabin pushed up from him, taking him up with him. He headed for the door, dragging Rex with him. Alpha Widow’s blocked his path, shaking his head.

“Rex stays here.”

“No.”

“Yes, wolf. That’s an order.”

Fabin’s wolf snarled, but turned, giving me a small pushed back towards the couch before he stomped from the room.

“Strong wolf.” Aspen sighed. “Go get you some water and come back. We have to talk before he returns.”

Damn it. Not what Rex wanted to hear.

Chapter 24

Rex woke rested. Something he’d not felt in months. Not since he arrived at his mom’s hometown. His head still throbbed, but nowhere near as hard as his heart ached. So much had taken place since the start of the summer. He’d been in the North Carolina Mountains for almost three months and taken he didn’t know how many beatings to keep werewolves his inner wolf through they were supposed to lead some much required aid. That was all behind him. What lay ahead of him . . . Rex had no clue. What he did know was that Aspen had brought him breakfast and told him that Fabin and Alpha Widow was coming over in an hour. Surge of adreline rushed over him, but his body was frozen in place. He did not know what it meant to be a mate. Other than how his wolf had told him it was their only choice to give up the one chosen for them by fate in order for him to have the life he desired. There’d been so much confusion going on through him during that time. Part of him then feared he made the wrong choice in doing as Larry requested, but if fate had been kind enough to provide him with another mate . . . maybe he’d did the right thing.

Rex had came downstairs and joined Aspen in the living room a few moments before the front door opened and Alpha Widows appeared in the doorway.

“I’ve brought my little lost wolf with me, old friend.”

Rex did not see anyone with him, but the huge Alpha muscle bound alpha filled the doorway.

“Do you have a son in here that might be able to calm his nervousness a bit?”

Aspen glanced over at him, but all Rex could do was hold his breath. He’d been as jittery as hell since everything went down last night. He wasn’t sure if it was due to him being parted from his newly found mate, or all the other shit that took place. Combination of both, more likely.

“I think,” Aspen patted him on the leg and stood, waving towards the only other exit in the room. “we’d be best in the Kitchen, having some coffee while these two do . . .” Aspen waved his hands. “Whatever.”

Alpha Widows followed Aspen out, leaving behind the tall, drink of water that had declared that Rex belonged to the Calvary Pack. That might have pissed Rex off, but his wolf side felt it to be true, but part of Rex didn’t agree.

“How did you rest?” Fabin leaned against the door.

“Come take a seat.” Rex wasn’t sure why, but he patted the spot beside him. “Best sleep I’ve had in quite a while.” He watched as Fabin walked around the coffee table and sat down beside him. The weight balance was so off between them that he tilted towards him, falling against the man’s side. Strong arms came up, bracing him against a solid chest.

Warm air floated across his ear as Fabin brushed his lips against his. Rex’s entire body heated and his arms was up and around Fabin’s neck before he knew what he was doing. Next thing he knew the two of them were lip locked while holding each other.

Rough hands slid up his lower back he let his hands slid around the thickness of Fabin’s abs. His cock throbbed faster than a jackhammer, which had to the be the only reason Rex ended up straddling Fabin’s lap while lip locked with him.

October 15, 2020

This is a follow up to the novel In the Absence of Light.

A handmade sailboat helped bring Morgan back to Grant but he never imagined they would put it in the water.

Then Morgan sees something in the light that sets Grant on a mission to get them to the middle of the ocean. An unknown destination they have to be at when the sun rises.

It’s important enough that Morgan is willing to leave Durstrand. Important enough that he’ll face the challenges of his autism.

So important, it could even be a matter of life and death.

By The Light of Dawn happens at the same time The Darkest Hour (Jeff’s story) takes place and contains mild spoilers as well as teasers. The plot points revealed are the same ones that were revealed at the end of In the Absence of Light.

EXCERPT

Durstrand: a little town in the middle of nowhere-deep-south, with a place called Toolies. Restaurant by day, bar by night, a single mechanic shop, hardware store, and a drive-in theatre set in the middle of a cow pasture, where they held a town cookout once a year to eat said cows.

And I hated to admit it but apparently letting the cows watch movies did make them taste better.

Durstrand was where I escaped to, where I never planned to stay until I fell in love with one of the most unique people in the world.

Morgan Kade.

The bacon grease popped and kissed the side of my hand. “Damnit.” You’d think I’d learn. Bacon always fought back, particularly early in the morning, when you were still too sleep fogged to defend yourself.

“Turn down the stove and that won’t happen.”

Morgan whisked through the kitchen and out the back door.

Our yellow lab right on his heels. His thick tail knocking the chairs aside, whacking the walls, then the doorway.

Dog, who after almost six months of living with us, still didn’t have a real name. No matter what I suggested, it didn’t fit.

Dog fit because he was a dog and until he was something else, he’d continue to be Dog.

I glared in Morgan’s direction. And just for spite, I didn’t turn down the heat.

I flipped the bacon, cracked the eggs, they sizzled in a second skillet on a back burner.

The bacon popped, and the goddamned droplet hit my right nipple. “Fuck.”

The back door opened, Morgan zipped through the kitchen. “Told you to turn it down, or you could wear a long—” Gone again. The thump, thump of a perpetual happy lab puppy right behind him. Although Dog wasn’t very puppy in appearance. In the past several months he’d gone from a fat-bellied-rolly-polly into a wall of muscle and mass, with jowls that could soak up a gallon of water and redeposit it onto your lap.

Or face.

A high-pitched beep came from somewhere outside. I’d heard the sound a million times during my years in Chicago working and living in a shipping yard. My life before Durstrand. My life before Morgan Kade. A time when my days were filled with dodging the FBI and designing ways to smuggle high-dollar goods, stolen art, cars, jewelry, across the ocean or just to squirrel them away for some rich person who didn’t want to pay the taxman.

I don’t know why they bothered. It wasn’t like I was cheap.

Honestly, I think cheating Uncle Sam gave them some sort of perverse pleasure. Not that I blame them.

The back-up warning grew louder. I pushed aside the curtain over the sink. A flatbed truck made its way in reverse up the long driveway. I know damn well they weren’t coming for the pickup truck. It was not only paid for, it wasn’t worth a car payment.

Oh, I could have afforded a new car without payments even, but there were some things more important than money that brought me happiness no luxury ever could.

Said happiness raced past again, out the back door.

This time Dog stopped and cocked his head at me.

"What?”

Dog wagged his tail.

The truck engine rumbled, and the dog vanished, followed by the screen door slapping the frame.

I parted the curtain again. I was wrong. It wasn’t the standard flatbed truck. A series of ridges created a cradle to keep its load from tilting. A crane rigged with steel cable and pullies lay folded at the edge. I’d seen larger versions transporting yachts at various docks all over the world.

While this truck had all the bells and whistles used for million-dollar vessels, it wouldn’t have been able to haul anything more than thirty-feet.

The sailboat Morgan built was exactly twenty-five and a half.

Chapter 23

“Uh . . . Aspen?” Alpha Widow walked over to Fabin, taking a wide path away from Rex. “What did you do?”

“Wasn’t me, old friend.”

“Then what just happened to my Beta?”

“My son’s magic snuck up and out on him. Suffice to say, for the first time. Right, Rex?”

“That was magic?”

“Sure was.” Aspen smiled over at me. “Powerful for a first time, wasn’t it Warlock Bryon Perry?”

Rex glanced at his grandfather, who nodded his agreement before giving him a thumbs up. What was going on around him? The entire day had been wonky. He’d been in the dungeon, ready to take a hell of a beating from a strange group of werewolves. Then the place was swarmed with men that resembled him and turned out to be family, but some of the top ranked supernatural being among the Supernatural World. Not to mention he had a new true mate, one stronger than his werewolf. One he’d just used magic on. Magic.

“Oh boy.” Rex flopped back, tossing his hands over his face. “How do I fix this?”

“Take a deep breath.” Aspen waited until I took two. “Let your shoulders relax and close your eyes. Then wiggle your fingers.”

All the ice like tingles trickled their way to the end of Rex fingertips and then dissipated. He was in the midst of shaking his arms out when Fabin groaned.

“What just happened?”

“You mate froze your ass.” Alpha Widows slapped Fabin on the back and then motioned to Rex’s prone body. “Might want to get him out of that glass before he does get cut.”

“I’m fine.” He was halfway up on his own when Fabin scooped him up, bridal style. “Put me down. Please. Now.”

Fabin walked over to the sofa and sat down, tucking him tight against his body. Rex wasn’t about to complain, even though he might should have.

“Time we get back to the question at hand.” Alpha Widows retook his spot against the wall as the higherups retook their spot on the sofa across from him and Fabin.

Damn, Rex had hoped his little mishaps had made Alpha Widows forget the entire question. Sure hadn’t made him forget the fact that Alpha Widows thought he belonged to him. That was a fact he would not let go. Guess if he couldn’t let his pet peeve go, it was only far they addressed Alpha Widows.

“Fine.” Rex tried to slid from Fabin’s lap, but he tightened his hold. “Forgive me in advance if I use the wrong terminology. My head hurts and I’m on overload. Larry is my former true mate.”

“Former?” Fabin growled. “You released a mate?”

“At my request.” Larry supplied.

“Why in the hell would you give up a true mate?” Alpha Widows snapped.

“I was married and had a son. It was not allowed to have male mates in the pack.” Pain laced Larry’s voice, but he stood tall.

“Yet you had no problem asking him to offer himself up to Alpha Chamberland as a sacficial lamb.” Alpha Widow scuffed. “You do not deserve to be a beta.”

“Hey.” Rex was out of Fabin’s lap and in front of Larry in seconds. “Do not speak to him that way. He did what had to be done help his pack mates survive. He saw a way to better their lives. He might not have handled things like your betas would, but he did the best he could for the pack he grew up in. Do not give him shit.”

“Watch it.”

Alpha Widow snarled and pressed in on him, but Rex’s wolf, stupid as Rex was he snarled right back. What got him most was the fact that his fingers began to feel fiery again. He took three huge steps back, shoving Larry with him, which had Fabin up on his feet and growling at Larry. Rex’s hands lifted. One towards Alpha Widows chest the other towards Fabin. It less than a second a second a bright white light flew from both hands, shoving both of the werewolves into the wall across the room. Aspen and Councilman Bryon Perry appeared in his line of sight, gripping his hands, lowering them.

“Calm down, young Warlock. No one is going to harm anyone.”

“What the hell?” Alpha Widows sighed. “Aspen, your son needs training.”

“Duh.” Aspen snorted. “He’s not even the age to . . .”

“He is.” Head Supernatural David Perry sighed. “We will have to reach out to Mixed Supernatural Councilman Alvin Thomas. He will not only have to be trained in the werewolf way, but the Warlock, and the Mixed Breed. Then he will choose which way he will live his life.”

Once again, for what felt like the hundredth time that day, Rex found himself in Fabin’s arms and someone saying lay him on the sofa. He needs to rest. Words were never truer. His mind raced and nothing made any sense to him. Too much had happened and all he wanted was time to clear his head and make sense of one thing at a time.

“Larry,” Fabin’s tone was tight, but respectful, which Rex expected was hard for him, considering how he was the former mate. “Does he have a room?”

“He has something. I would not call it a room.”

“We will take him to our lands.” Alpha Widows replied.

“No.” Rex muttered.

“Yes, Mate. End of conversation.”

“Is not.”

“Is.” Fabin ran his hand across his forehad. “Coven Leader Perrry, can I ask you to transport us to my home.”

“That is not acceptable.” Head Supernatural David Perry said. “As much as you are going to dislike this, until he of age, he is in his father’s hands. You know the laws.”

Right. True mates could not take over unless parents agree. Rex’s wolf whimpered, but Rex liked the idea of not having to deal with another mate at the time. There were so much else to handle. It also meant he no longer belonged to Alpha Widows.

“He has to have a Pack.” Councilman William Perry replied.

“Yes, and he does.” Head Supernatural David Perry said. “Until they are properly mated, he belongs to the Chamberland Pack.”

“No. Please, Head Supernatural David Perry. Do not make him remain under that Alpha’s hatred.” Fabin’s begging shocked Rex, but he knew the answer to his plea. Head Supernatural was quoting the laws. And if Fabin took time to think with his logical mind, not his mate’s mind, he would know as well. So would Alpha Widows.

“Fabin,” Alpha Widows sighs filled the room and had Fabin giving one of his own as he leaned down and brushed a light kiss across my forehead.

“Will he be forced to live among the pack, or will he remain in the Coven?”

“Coven.” Head Supernatural Perry said. “Tomorrow, you and Coven Leader Aspen can meet and discuss the mateship. I will reach out to Mixed Supernatural Councilman Alvin Thomas and bring him on the matter, so we can figure out what order is best for him to learn his true life. Are we all on the same page?”

A round of yes filled the room, as Fabin brushed another kiss on Rex’s forehead and whispered. “Get some rest tonight. I will see you tomorrow, my mate. You will be safe with your father. I promise. He is a great man.”

Chapter 22

Conversation flowed around him, but it slipped in and out of his mind. The voices he knew, some more familiar than others. All seemed to talk about him. Rex wasn’t sure when he had . . . fallen asleep? Lost consciousness? Whatever had happened, but it was clear he’d missed something.

“Coven Leader Aspen, were you like Beta Larry, aware of your son’s plan?”

Official tone. Rex had woken in the middle of his entire plan being revealed to the higher ups. Heads would most likely roll and Larry was going to take the brunt of it if he did not get his ass moving.

“Head Supernatural Leader David Perry, I swear to you, I would never have allowed my son to do such. I knew the first time I came for a visit that something was off. I tried to get him to confide in me, but . . .”

There was a huge sigh and then a gruff voice that sent shivers rushing down my spine, settling in my groin. “What I want to know is how a true born beta like that bastard could allow the one that should have been his Alpha to degrade himself instead of standing beside him?”

“Beta Fabin, stand down.”

That sharp command had Rex bracing his hands on the side of the sofa and pushing himself upright. “Do not,” every head in the room turned. “Blame Larry for doing as I told him.” Rex cleared his parched throat. Why was he so dry? “I discussed my plan of actions with my former - - Larry. He voiced his displeasure and dislike in my plan of attack. He could not come up with another way, nor could I. I did what was best for the wolves I was born to lead. They deserved better and I was going to ensure the ones who requested it, got it. No matter the cost to me and my wolf. It was all we could settle for.” Rex believed it was what any good werewolf would do.

“There is several things in there that I’d like addressed, Head Supernatural David Perry.” Alpha Widows placed his hand on Fabin’s shoulder and squeezed. “Remain still. That’s an order, beta.”

“You have the floor, Alpha Widows.”

“First, Rex, you were brave to do what you did. Second, Beta Larry has done admitted that he requested you aid the pack, at any cost to yourself. That was wrong of him. He is to assistant the Alpha, you are not and could not be the Alpha. What he should have done was contact the Pack Master himself.” Alpha Widows frowned, then shifted his attention to Larry, before moving back to me. “I can not help but feel that there is more to the story between you and him. I also would like for you to explain what Larry is a ‘former’ of.”

Shit. He’d caught that slip. Rex hadn’t meant to give that away, but . . . No going back, but there is a way out of it. “Since Mr. Chamberland is under restriction and his appointed overseer is not present, I request a private meeting with Head Supernatural David Perry.” Turned out not to me his wisest move, but in his defense he learned a valuable life lesson.

“Son,” Aspen came over to him and sighed as he shook his head. “You are no longer a member of the Chamberland Pack.”

“What?”

He’d heard that before. Didn’t believe it then, because Alpha Widow had been spouting off about him belonging to him. First off, Rex belonged to no one, but himself.

“He is right.” Fabin ran his hand up my arm, stopping to caressa my cheek. “The moment I announced you as my true mate, you became a member of the Calvary Pack. You know belong to Alpha Widows. That means you must make your request through him, and he must go through the Pack Master and so forth.”

“Bullshit.” Rex rushed backwards, shaking his head until he tumbled over the sofa, landing on the other side, crashing through a glass coffee table.

“Crap.” Fabin shouted. “Are you all right?”

Hands ran up and down Rex’s arms and legs faster than he could brush them away. Each touch only added to the fire rushing through his veins. Each passing second more and more bubbled to life, flowing upwards towards the tips of his fingers, until . . .

“STOP!”

Fabin’s entire body went stiff and he toppled over backwards. One deep chuckle flowed through the room that had gone quiet. A snot accompanied it, as did a sucked in deep breath as if someone had tried to hold in a laugh. Rex wasn’t sure what had happened. All he knew was the tips of his fingers stung and tingled. The fiery feeling had faded, leaving behind an ice like one.

Chapter 21

Once my four relative were seated on the longest sofa in the living room, Alpha Widows and his guys along with Mr. Chamberland and Larry took stance against the wall, leaving me standing between them like bait to be picked over. Rex’s wolf wiggled and rumbled his displeasure, but there was so much power hovering over him he could not dispute the situation he found himself in. It was unlike when Mr. Chamberland attempted to order him around. There were only two people in the room that he could ignore. The rest out ranked him and his wolf. Not good. His wolf was strong. Rex wasn’t sure how he knew the Warlocks in the room held more power than him, but they did. He wasn’t sure if it was because he knew nothing about that side of him, not that he knew much about his werewolf side.

“Let’s get started.” Councilman William Perry scooted to the edge of the sofa. “I got a call from Alpha Donavan from the Oma Pack. He had received ten calls from Alpha Chamberland requesting him take same sex mated pairs. He questioned each of them when they came into his pack. Each told him the same story.” Rex didn’t need to hear the story. Mr. Chamberland had dug his own grave by going back to the same pack so many times. It was something Rex had hoped would happen. Didn’t mean he wanted to explain his own actions. He’d hoped the higher up would just take it at face value and step in. “What I want to know is how you played into all this.”

As much as it bothered his wolf and him to remain quiet, he did so.

“Mate,” Fabin’s voice flowed over him like melted butter. Rex’s wolf whimpered at he knew what was coming, but steeled himself to ignore the order. “Answer him.”

A pin could be heard in the room for several moments.

“You do realize you are breaking several laws by remaining silent.” The Warlock sitting to the right of Councilman William Perry. “You are an unannounced Mix Breed with Warlock and Werewolf blood. Do you know what that means?”

The one thing that Mr. Chamberland had not done was provide him with books regarding Mix Breeds. At first, he had not been aware of the Mix Breed status. Afterwards, he had only cared about punishment for his sister creating such a vile monster.

“Councilman Bryon Perry,” Aspen, who sat to the left of Councilman Bryon Perry, gave Rex a huge smile. “I’m sure that my son is not aware of the laws of Mix Breeds or Warlocks. I’m not even sure if he knows the proper laws of the werewolves.”

The powerful men fell silent again, but Mr. Chamberland kept mumbling under his breath. No one paid him attention, other than Rex, which is why he knew when to leap.

Rex slammed against Mr. Chamberland the moment he lunged towards the sofa of powerful men. Mr. Chamberland must not have expected anyone to react to his movement, because his body loosely flew into the hand-built oak cabinet, cracking it it in the middle. His wolf grunt and fell limply to the floor. Alpha Widows came up beside Rex, looking down at Mr. Chamberland.

“Nice job.” He glanced back at the sofa. “He’s unconscious and most likely has several broken ribs and a bruised spine.”

The guy that sat to the right of Councilman William Perry snapped his fingers and a rope appeared around Mr. Chamberland’s feet and arms. “Just to be safe.” He nodded and then waved to the center of the room. “It is time that you began to talk. There is no way around answering Councilman William Perry’s question. That is an order from Head Supernatural David Perry.”

Shit. Damn. Two councilmen were related to him. One werewolf and one Warlock. And the Head of the Supernatural World. What in the world? That was . . . Shocking as hell. Worse it put him in an even bigger bind. Not only was he going against his family, even if he did not know how they were related to him exactly, but they were powerful men among his world. It was stupid and dangerous to ignore the werewolf councilman, and let ignorance aid him when it came to the Warlock councilman, but . . . going against the head of the supernatural world . . .

“Fine.” He retook his place among the center of the room. “This pack needed help. Mr. Chamberland was not doing what was best for the pack that should belong to my wolf. I could not legally step up and aid them, so I did so the only way I could think of.”

“How was that?” Councilman William Perry asked.

“I traded the one thing that Mr. Chamberland longed for.”

“What was that?” Councilman Bryon Perry leaned back and crossed his ankles.

“He longed to show his dominance over me. So I let him.”

“You let him.” Aspen might as well jumped to his feet as loud as he shouted. “Is that why you sported those bruises?”

Rex simply shrugged and nodded his agreement. He knew none of them would understand, so when a deep growl consumed the room he sucked his lower lip between his teeth to keep from laughing. Fabin was not pleased with his answer. Might as well said his actions.

“This will not continue.”

Rex thought that’s what Fabin said as he came to his side.

“It will not.” Councilman William Perry stood. “I can not legally change the alpha of any pack, but I am allowed to put restriction on supervisions on them. Alpha Chamberland’s pack will be given an overseers and the dugeoun will be eliminated.”

Wasn’t sure who took a deeper breath me, or Larry. Not that it mattered much to him. He was set to go to a new pack in another week. He was following his ex-wife to her new pack so he can be part of his son’s life. The two of them had worked out visitations and the Alpha of the pack agreed to take him in. Her true mate has agreed that he would not keep him from his son. Rex was pleased that all that had taken place for him. It also meant that he would be more likely to find himself a new true mate.

“That is not all that Alpha Chamberland will face when he wakes.” Head Supernatural David Perry said. “He is ordered to bring his pack into the current world. Pack members are allowed to be with their true mates, no matter who they are, and they are not to be punished for such. I can not erase the law that the former alpha wrote about Rex Chamberland, but I can ensure that any more pack members that are Mix Breeds are treated fairly and respected fully. I can also ensure that any Mix Breed that wish to join the Chamberland Pack can do so without future threat or automatic dismissal of petition.”

Rex might have hit the floor if Fabin had not slipped his arms around his waist. Everything he had been through had not been for nothing. Everything his mother’s birthpack needed had been taken care of. The Chamberland Pack members, the wolves his wolf should have been leading, would be safe from future harm and would grow into a productive one. He might not have gotten Mr. Chamberland out of leadership, but someone would be overseeing his every move. That would ensure the pack had what it needed. There would be no more need for him to take any beatings, whippings, or time in spent in a cage.

“Head Supernatural - -“

“Get him sat down and let him rest.”

Fabin lifted him like he weighed nothing and carried him over to the other sofa and laid him down, brushing a stray piece of hair from his head. “Rest, my mate. Your hard work has paid off. No need for you to worry over your wolves any more.”

Chapter 20

What was going on? Who was these guys that was filling the room? Why did they look like him? There were . . . was that . . . it was. Aspen. What was he doing here.

“Rex? You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Doesn’t look like it.”

Hadn’t much happened to him. He’d just been strung up and Alpha Widows came in. The whip had been brought out, but Fabin had . . . That’s right. Fabin had stepped up and stopped anyone from touching him. Wasn’t sure why, but was too. Didn’t want to admit it, but Rex’s wolf did. Rex’s wolf loved the idea of having a true mate. One that he did not have to rebuke to make happy. Rex had not wanted to give up Larry.

“I’d like to know why he has all those abrasions and whelps on his body.” Fabin, or almond sexy eyes, as Rex liked to call him, came up to him and cupped his chin, tilting his head to the left then the right.

Rex’s wolf whimpered, but Rex jerked his chin free and took a huge step back, only to lose his footing thanks to the sprang ankle he’d received the other day during a five on one battle with Mr. Chamberland’s guards. Turned out he was a natural fighter thanks to his werewolf genes, but even he had his limits when the number game came into play.

Warm arms wrapped around his waist, halting his ungraceful fall to the floor.

“What happened to you, my mate?”

Damn, he had not wanted those words to be said in front of so many people, especially his father and whoever else those that resembled him. He still had no clue who the powerful people were, but one thing was for sure they had to be related to him. He just wasn’t sure how. One of them smelt of werewolf while the rest of them held Witch skills, which made more sense than a werewolf.

“Mate?”

“Old Friend,” Alpha Widows voice boomed through the dungeon like a train charging down its tracks. “That’s what we were dealing with when you and the calvary came in.”

“Old Friend?” Rex wasn’t sure who he was questioning. His head was swimming with confusion and his body thrummed with desire and heat from being near his mate. All his body wanted to do was press itself closer to Fabin and seep into his pores, combing themselves for the rest of their lives.

“Yes, my mate. Alpha Widows and Coven Leader Aspen have been friends for all their lives. It is why he asked him to try and discover what was taking place here. He knew something was up, just not what.”

The man that resembled Rex the most, and stood just to the left of Aspen, came forward and laid a hand against Rex’s chest. “I believe it is time that you answered some questions for me.”

“Who are you?”

“Mate, be respectful.”

Took Rex biting the inside of his jaw to keep from smarting off to his mate. He did not even know who was in the dungeon. His mind spun a thousand miles a minute while his body screamed for its mate to take and claim him. His wolf begged to be released so he could present himself to his mate while he bowed to the newcomers that Rex knew nothing about. And his mate wanted him to be respectful. How was he supposed to do all that?

“I think he would, young beta, if he knew who I was.”

Least the man knew part of his state of mind.

“Is that the case, mate?”

Rex lifted an eyebrow and glanced at the hand on his chest. The hand slowly lifted and was held out to him.

“My name is, Werewolf Councilman William Perry.”

Who knew one introduction could provide so much information. Powerful man. And kin to Aspen, so kin to him. How was another question.

“Nice to meet you, Councilman William Perry.” Sure did not want to answer his questions. Was not sure how he would react to me going around the pack law.

“I think there has been some fishiness going on in this pack. Some has been overlooked by Pack Master Combs. Not just during the current reining Alpha Chamberland, but his predecessor.”

Least Councilman William Perry was smart. Let’s see if he would do anything about it. Some higher up talk big and do nothing.

Councilman William Perry faced Mr. Chamberland, glaring wasn’t the right word, but it was clear he was waiting for him to explain his actions. Rex wasn’t sure where it would have been best for Mr. Chamberland to start. There were so many areas to address. Rex himself hoped he started with why he was ranked bottom.

“Fine.” Councilman William Perry turned back to Rex. “Let me tell you what I have been told and then you can fill me in on the rest, but first, let’s take this to the living room.” He faced Larry and waved him towards the door. “Go clear the Pack House of all unnecessary members.”

Chapter 19 Part 2

“Now, now. You can’t be going and hurting my alpha.” The sexy almond shaped eyes said. “You just sit there and be a nice wolf.”

Rex ready for his wolf to attack, but his wolf sat back and tilted his head to the left then the right, before he lowered himself to his belly.

What in the . . .

Mate. Mate. Mate.

It was all that kept bouncing around inside Rex’s mind. Not that he needed to hear it more than once. Even that many times. He’d gathered as much when his wolf had not attacked. His actions had been strange for him and his wolf, but not something he hadn’t heard of. Several of the pack members he’d been able to speak to, including Larry, told him how that when they ran across their mate and realized they were the less dominate of the two their wolf had wanted to obey the other without question. Not a complication Rex expected to come his way. Or one that Larry had warned him of. Larry told him, multiple times, that there were very few wolves stronger than him. Larry wasn’t quite right. Out of the five newcomers in the room, three of them held more power than his wolf. The other two were equal to him. Looked as if the information Larry gave him was outdate. Or Larry hadn’t been around many other wolves. Not a shocking thought.

“Alpha Widows,” Mr. Chamberland came up beside the tallest guy, “what is going on?”

“Fabin,” the tallest guy sighed and released the almond shaped eyes arm. “Am I to believe you and him are . . .”

“Yes, Alpha.”

“Well that changes things greatly.”

“Excuse me?” Mr. Chamberland snapped his fingers and his two goons came up to his side. “Take the wolf to the cage and cover it.”

Rex’s wolf remained vigilant and would have gone with them, but before they could made a move towards him Fabin had blocked the path to him and the other three guys that stood near the tallest dude came to his side.

“Tell your men to stand down.” Mr. Chamberland snapped.

“I’m afraid I can not do such.”

Alpha Widows response earned him a lifted eyebrow and crossed arms.

“If you wish to challenge me, then do so, but as of know that wolf belongs to us.”

Belongs to them? What in the world? Rex belonged to no one. His wolf did not either. That was the last straw for Rex, so he shoved himself through the wolf’s mind and shifted into his human form. He took a second to regain his equilibrium before he spoke.

“I belong to myself.”

Fabin glanced over his shoulder and winked.

“Watch yourself.” Mr. Chamberland command washed over me like everything the man said.

“If you, or anyone else, wishes to speak with me then all they have to do is ask me.”

“I said, watch it. You best remember your place among the pack.”

“And just what is his place.” Alpha Widows asked as he leaned towards me, sniffing. “He is ten times stronger than you. He would be among my top ten.”

Wow. Rex wanted to ask more about his pack, but he was not quite sure what was going on and until he had a better grasp of that, he’d keep his questions to himself.

“That is no concern of yours.” Mr. Chamberland. “Just tell your men to step aside so my guys can take the welp away.”

“That will not happen.”

The soft-spoken order pulled a deep snarl from Mr. Chamberland as he spun and leapt towards the newcomer, only to slam into an invisible wall that sent him flying backwards until he slammed into the cross he loved to string people up to.

Rex wasn’t sure who the man that resembled him was, but what was clear was that he had enough power to send every wolf in the room to their knees, including him.
