Last Free Write Scene for 2023

Hi all,

Hope all had a wonderful Christmas and an amazing time with their families and friends. I sure did. I had a healthy meal with my Mom and Dad and some fun times. Now, onto our last Free Scene of the year. Doesn’t seem possible does it, but it is. I’m unsure if I will start the year off with a Free Write Story or more Free Write Scenes yet, but we will find out next week.

The large beast sat on the edge of the porch whinning with his head between its paws and ears hunkered down. Not a single sign of aggression towards me. Al doubted the extremely large wolf would attack him, but he wasn’t going to take the change.

“You stay there while I walk inside and call animal control.” I held my hands out in front of me, while walking back inside the house, but before I could reach the counter where the phone rested a mist formed around the beast, freezing me in place.

The mist grew thicker and thicker until the animal was out of view. My mind told me to run and slam the door shut, but my body was frozen in place.

Before I knew it, the mist faded away leaving behind a naked man I knew all too well.

“Daven?”

Free Write Scene

Hi all,

I all but forgot to post something today, so I borrowed from a short scene I wrote for a exercise I did for a community post for the definition of the word Foolscap. I don’t think they will mind me borrowing my own work. I hope you all enjoy the short work. It’s not my usual style of writing, but it does give you a brief insight into the style of my side project I’m working on.

Let your imagination soar as you read this short scene.

Have a great day

Julia

Jeffery stared down at the foolscap wondering where the fancy writing was. He'd been told day after day for ten years by his father and grandfather that their family history was written on the ancient sheet of an unusual-sized piece of paper. Only the old ones would write on an 8 X 13 size piece of paper. Quil and ink aspect made sense, how else would they write back when George Washington was President? Guess I was lucky it wasn't on a clay tablet in picture form. Still, there was nothing here, so what was he supposed to do? How was he supposed to learn where he came from since the Orgs took out his entire family before his fifteenth birthday?

"Can I help you with something, young man?"

Jeffery spun to find a crumbled-in on himself, long, white-haired man leaning against a wooden walking stick that stuck a good foot above his head. A voice he'd not heard in over six years came to life in his mind.

"Elder of Summar. Kneel, boy. Now."

He had no idea why his father's voice sprang to life in his mind, but he did just what his father did. Yet, he tucked the foolscap behind his back. Something inside him told him he wasn't supposed to have that sheet of paper.

They sat in the recliners, asleep like every other night, except tonight neither slept. Hanks’ eyes met his, but Hanks’ outstretched hands failed short of reaching his thanks to the lifelessness shining back at him from those once sexy, baby blue round eyes that normally carried love and joy at all times.

What was he to do without the man who saved his life some forty years ago? He had not taken a breath or made a decision without Hank since that day. What would become of him? How would he survive this world? Not that he would begrudge Hank for his decision to leave the pain filled life that had plagued him since the cancer caught hold of him. Nope. He grasped the concept of what a life full of pure pain, even when full of love and happiness was life. He’d seen it with his mother when she suffered through breast cancer when he was fourteen. Watching it with his lover was a thousand times worse in his opinion. That might be cruel to think, but . . .

How else was he supposed to feel in that moment? His heart had been ripped from his chest, leaving behind a gaping hole that could not be stitched back together by the best of surgeons.

Free Write Scene

Hi,

Sorry, there’s been no post this month. I’ve been dead into the free write I’m on for NaNoWrMo. I’m not done with it, but I’ve surpassed the 50,000-word mark, winning NaNoWrMo for the year. Yeah me!

Once I get this story wrapped up and shaped up, it’s going to be a great little story that I think all will love to read and get lost in. I’m going to take a small time out from writing it and write you a free write scene today. I hope you can get lost in what I come up with.

Remember let your imagination soar when you read.

Kamal watched through the binoculars as the unknown creature-man hulked his way down the halfway cut path through the cornfield. The half-grown corn made it easier to see him or he’d be hidden from it, but it kept the sun off the guy, which is what the guy had to be after because before he got under the shade of the taller stalks of the corn his body had been putting off steam and smoke. Kamal only saw such stuff when watched his Vampire movies. Heck fire, it was as if he'd been transported into one of them.

He'd been bird-watching in the forest behind the open field before old man’s Sawtooth’s corn field when he spotted the creep, black trench coat man-wearing guy all but Tasmanian Deviling it across the open field. When he spotted the stubbles of smoke rising off of him, he’d zoomed in on him. At first, he though the guy was on fire and trying to free himself of the coat by throwing his arms up in the air, but nope the guy had been yanking the coat over his head, shielding his face.

“Aren’t the birds the other way, bro?” His brother, Shamal yelled up at him, scarring away any birds that might have been lurking.

“Thanks man, you have no clue what you are doing.” He took one more look in the binoculars only to find the guy vanished from his line of sight. “Where did you go?”

“You found one then? What is it? Come on, tell me. You’ve been out here for three weeks straight trying to catch sight of some miraculous bird.”

He wished he’d found what he came here looking for. His sponsor was going to kick him in the butt for wasting so much money spending three weeks in a hotel in one location with no results. A photo of any kind of bird might have appeased him, but Kamal refused to take a shot unless it was worthy of news, which meant he rarely took one. He’d make news with his next photo or never take another one in his life. He’d deemed it his goal in life and he’d succeed.

“Did you get the shot?”

He put the binoculars back up to his head, “It wasn’t nothing, after all.” What a lie! Something and a half, but what? He had to investigate, even if it wasn’t in his wheelhouse. Yet, he’d not be taking his brother into the fray of things. Whatever he saw, it sure wasn’t cosher and didn’t involve birds. It meant leaving his baby brother behind safe and sound tucked away in the hotel room. He thought his boss might kill him if he failed to get something while here, but if he endangered his brother his mom would kill him and bring him back multiple times in order to do so again in more horrible manners.

Every other minute last night I heard a bark or a growl or a whine of some kind. There had been many nights of late that the night had been full of those sounds, but fear of wild, fighting dogs kept me locked inside my house. Last night was no exception. At least the ruckus ended earlier than normal last night. It made me wonder what in the world happened. If they caught whatever they’d been after all these nights or if they finally gave up on the chase. Whichever didn’t really matter as long as it was one of those and they remained gone.

“There.” I laid down my purple mascara, nodding at the mirror loving the dark triangle I’d created at the corner of my eyes. “You’ve done it again, Jason.” I roamed my hand down my wife-beater shirt, giving myself one more glance over before I left the room, heading off to the office.

I got one foot into my hallway, pausing. Okay, I screamed like some little bitch-of-a-girl. Who wouldn’t have when they found a naked man laying half in their open door and their hallway? And not just any naked man, but his business partner, the man he’d had a secret crush on for the last five years, the man he’d pined away for from afar like a fool.

“Davis, oh my Mother of Earth.” I rushed over to him, kneeling, forcing my eyes to remain on his face. A face that you no longer saw the normal tanned skin. Instead you saw darkening purple and blues covered with drying blood from slashes. “What happened you, my dear?” I ran my hand over the top of his head. “I’m calling for an ambulance.” I reached into my back pocket, extracting my phone.

“No.” Davis’ hand lifted from his side, pulling a groan from him. “Please, don’t.”

“You need medical help.”

“Just help me up and to a bathroom, Jason, please.”

“And what can you do in a bathroom?”

With private hatred of myself, I reached down, slipping my arms under his arms and tugged until he was able to get his knees under him and together we got him standing. He wobbled a bit as he stood there, staring at me.

“I just need a shower and a moment of alone time too. . . well, you’ll know soon enough, but for now just accept that this will all heal on me quickly.”

“Yeah right. Someone did a hell of a number on you, my friend.”

“I’ve had worse.” Davis sighed. “Will take worse for you any day.” He muttered as he headed towards my bathroom.

“What did you just say?”

“Nothing.”

“Why did someone beat you up because of me?”

I’d done nothing stupid as of late. That I knew of anyway. Actually, I’d been doing my best to stay out of trouble after the last fiasco with the Campbell Brothers. Davis pulled me out of the fire on that one and I had no clue how he managed to soothe their ire when I’d riled them up by insulting their son.

“Let me get cleaned up. Can I borrow some clothes?”

Oh yeah. Didn’t need him walking around me all naked and stuff. My libido would rise up soon as it registered how bare-chested Davis was. Shocked me my cock hadn’t already woke up.

“I’ll bring you some sweats. It’s all I have that will fit you.”

Davis was a bit taller than me and had way more broad shoulders and chests than me, but him in any of my clothing would be awesome.

I didn’t have to knock on the bathroom door or anything to give him the clothing. It stood open and Davis stood behind the glass shower door with water cascading down his body. What I wouldn’t do to be in there with him.

“Talk to me, Davis. What happened?”

“You aren’t going to let me clean up are you?”

“No. Not when you are pulling my name into whatever caused this when I know of nothing I’ve done.”

“It’s not your mistake this time.”

“Then whose?”

“Mine.” He heaved a deep sigh as his hand reached for the bottle of body soap. “I’m not like most people, which you knew just not all the details about, and we have certain rules we have to follow when we are ready to involve someone in our lives.”

“Quit being evasive.”

“Fine. Fine. But if I come right out and say this then you are involved in my life fully, rather you want to be or not. I’m trying to save you that.”

“Give me that choice.”

“That’s it, you won’t have a choice. If I tell you, then you are in for the rest of your life even if you wish to leave you won’t be able to. They will make you stay and live a life with me.”

Live a life with him? What was he going to tell me that entailed me living a life with him? It sounded as if . . . Could he have feelings for me and I not know it? If so, he’d not picked up on my attraction to him, but the attraction was one thing going full in for an entire life . . . Mother of Earth, I could be blowing something much simpler up, but pushing forward to find out might mean ending my life as it is. Or that’s what it sounded like. Was it worth it?

Yes. This was Davis. Anything was worth it for him.

“Tell me.”

“Are you one hundred percent sure? I will continue to stand between you and them for as long as it takes.”

“Tell me. You are not going to keep getting beat up like this. It will kill you.”

I sat doing my favorite pastime, watching Jamal sleep in his comfy recliner. His feet were kicked up and his head lulled to the right. The way the lightweight blanket draped over one shoulder and down his body reminded me of a puppy wrapped up under a cozy blanket.

Arms snuggled around my waist, tugging me back against a hard, firm chest that I knew as well as I did the one curled underneath the blanket. I loved my life with my partners. The day I ran across Daniel and Jamal was beyond the best day of my life. None of us knew the day they walked down the boardwalk and saw a struggling musician playing for his supper money that they’d met their third.

“He’s so peaceful.”

“Only because we have you, babe.” Daniel nuzzled the base of my neck, over his large-mouthed, claiming mark.

Jamal’s mark rested on the other side of my neck, smaller but still as prominent and visible as Daniel’s huge werewolf teeth marks. What could you say for a domestic breed dog shifter? We were a triad and a half. Werewolf, a domestic breed dog shifter, and a human, all meant to have one happy-go-lucky life, and we did.

“You two are what makes us so special.” I squeezed his arms. “Doesn’t he look like a puppy laying there?”

“I can hear ya’, honey.”

“Then you know where I’d rather have you two.” A hard pinch to my ass had me yelping and it drew a deep, rich chuckle from Jamal. “Oh, hush you. And you, Daniel, stop that.”

“What? You started the playing with that comment.”

“Wasn’t a comment that required me being pinched.”

“Then,” Jamal was up, across the room and swooped me into his arms. “time to take you to our bed and ravish you the rest of the day.”

“Sounds like the perfect plan, Jamal.”

I giggled, in a very unmanly way, grinning up at him loving how he was able to handle my body weight even though he wasn’t that strong-looking. I’d told him over and over not to lift me, but he ignored me like they did on so many things when it came to making me happy.

“he’s doing it again, Jamal.”

“I know, but we will give him something much more entertaining to think on, won’t we, Daniel.”

“You two always do, babe.” I ran the tip of my finger over the outer edge of his face. “I love you both.”

Premier Club the words shined like a beacon of welcome, warmth, and fun when it brought death to all like him who stepped within ten feet of its door. So, why did he stand on the outskirts of its building like a fool?

Because Eaphel begged him to join him in the Raid on the Vampire/Coven Den with a Kill Order against them. What the group of Mixed Breeds, who found it safe and respectful enough of themselves to register their Mixed Breed status, done to receive a Kill Order was beyond him. Even most Mixed Breed groups didn’t receive them. He knew it was common for Mixed Breeds to receive so many marks against them they were forced to disperse and live without a group, the worst sentence for his kind. That’s why he never registered his Mixed Breed status. It’s also why when his boss found it out his entire life changed. His boss was kind enough, and held enough sympathy for him, that he gave him the option to quit the Nation Service Guard or he’d report him himself. Easy choice for him. He had had enough time in with the Guard to quit with partial retirement benefits and work part-time to finish filling in for money. It’d been easy enough to find a security job and his life partner kept bringing him side jobs like these, which brought him more than enough money to keep him sitting pretty.

“See you beat us here, baby.” Eaphel leaned over his back, kissing the base of the back of his neck, right over his Life Partner Mark, which he’d placed there some twenty years earlier when they’d barely been old enough to enter the Nations Service Guard.

“Yeah, babe.” A shiver ran down his spine but he shoved it to the back of his mind as he forced himself into work mode. “How many do we have with us and how many will be inside?”

Eaphel swept his hand behind him, revealing about twenty guys in solid black uniforms stating their elite status.

“Man, babe, these people are major players.” Elite status, and that many in one location for one Den with a Kill Order meant these people were presumed extremely dangerous. “What did these people do? “What did these people do?”

“Classified, Kalen.” He squared his shoulder, sighing so hard his shoulders lifted and fell, letting him know how sorry he was that he had to say that one word to him.

Kalen wished he didn’t have to hear them, but he did and each time they passed Eaphael’s lips while they worked together tore his heart out and reminded him why he worked so hard to hide his Mixed Breed status, even from his life partner.

“Alright. Let’s get this Raid a going.”

He faced the building again, taking in the silvery shim covering the entire large enclosure. Kalen wished he could warn Eaphel and the others about the Death Ending Ward around the enclosure but as far as the ones around him he was one hundred percent Vampire. It had to stay that way.

“You know anything else about this place from your dosie?”

“Only that we have to go in carefully because all our scouts never made it past the front door.”

Never made it near the front door is more like it. The Death Ending Spell kept anyone with deadly intent or without Vampire or Witch blood out by one of two methods. Death or Paralization. That was why, he had to find a way to get himself placed by himself high above and out of sight. He could bring down the Death Ending Ward, but not where anyone could see him do so.

“You want me where?”

“Thought you might take Hangry and go high and cover my men from afar.” Was he grinning at me? He didn’t grin when he was on a mission. He was in full-out blank mode. What was going on? “You did bring Hangry with you, right?”

“You know I never leave the house without Hangry when I’m on a mission.” He didn’t. Hangry, his lucky rifle was always broken down and at his side when he left the house to go to work, even on the security job. A side effect of being the top-ranked marksman in the world.

“Then pick you high spot and get in place, Kalen. You’ve got five minutes before we move out.”

Jace sat on the bench, taking in the bright, freshly cut green grass surrounding the meticulous fish pond with a waterfall of angels, letting it soothe his aching heart. Their depictions of the wonderful creatures were way off base for reality, but they had no way of knowing such. All these humans knew were the stories they’d been fed throughout the centuries. These human creatures had to be kept in the dark, no matter how dispicable Jace felt it was. It was the law of the Heaven Zone. Just like the true pictures of the sicken demons were kept hidden. Those foul creatures from the Hell Zone got away with coming and going to and from the Earth Zone way more than the angels did, which was what brought him onto the Earth Zone all the times he’d been sent. Their misdeeds left a human screwed up and in need of heavenly assistance to regain their lives. Today’s mission had been harder on him than expected, though.

The patient stole part of his heart. Left him a shell of the angel he was before he walked through the man’s bedroom door, fooling his, beyond his wits, friend about why he was there. It had taken him all his strength to do that much once he caught sight of him spread out under the dark navy sheet. Once he caught a whiff of his amazing scent his entire body reacted and then his soul caught up to the fact that the guy a demon had touched so deeply belonged to him.

He stood in front of the mirror trying to lift his head, failing. He’d not seen his reflection in over forty years and never would again so why look somewhere that should hold it? His partner had been gracious when he came home with twin pin prick in the crook of his neck and blood trailing from his lips down to his chin. Tears had stained his cheeks from hours of horrified crying while hiding curled up in the backseat of his car waiting for the monster who grabbed him as he exited the office building to return.

He could hear the guy’s deep, curt voice as he said, “You stole what belonged to me. You will give it back in forty years.”

The meaning behind the threat wasn’t clear and haunted him each morning he woke up, that one more than any other. It’d been forty years since searing pain shot across his shoulder as his blood left his body and he became a useless form in the stranger’s arms, leaving him thirsty like he’d never been since his Mom birth him. Too bad it wasn’t for water. The stranger supplied what he longed for and would have killed for, even was kind enough to give him a number of whom to contact so he could get his own supply of . . .

Blood. It’s what he’d been reduced to function off of daily. Who knew the rich, red elixir that ran through his veins when he was alive would be what kept him alive once he ceased to function as a typical human? And turned out that’s what had happened to him, but he’d not discovered that from the one who turned him. Nope. The contact for the blood was the only piece of information the bastard provided about his new life. He abandoned him to learn all about what he’d been turned into by himself. The one thankful thing about the night was, that he’d not been left to go home in a raving hungry state.

“Quit worrying, so much. It will be any other day, honey.” Saint’s warmth zeroed in around his back. “I have told you we would face whatever came today together.”

He didn’t want them to. He didn’t want Saint to be around him when the stranger reappeared. The guy didn’t need to get the idea in his head to strike out at him through his lover. It would rip him apart if the stranger harmed Saint. It’s why he’d broken his one promise to Saint and lied to him.

He’d swore to Saint they’d spend the entire day together while they waited for anything to arise, but he had plans of his own.

He tugged the tail of his shirt down, hoping he got any wrinkles out of it then gave Saint a kiss on the cheek. “I’m going to run out and get us some breakfast and coffee from Alvin’s.” Knew he’d be unable to resist Alvin’s they fixed his favorite Ice Chai Pumpkin Spice Latte.

“You are still after my heart after all these years.” He shot me his mega-watt smile, kissing me deeply before handing me the keys to his Jeep. “Take Betsy. It’ll be faster. I’ll call the order in.”

“Not necessary. I’ll ride the bike. Want the exercise.”

“Yeah right. You think you can sneak away from me. Won’t be happening, honey.” A hard slap against his shoulder reminded him of how long the two of them had lived together. “Remember, we were best friends way before we were partners, honey. I know how your mind works.” He wrapped his arms around him. “And I won’t give you up. For any reason. What happens to you, happens to me. We are in this for life. It’s what we promised each other and it’s what I will hold you to. Now, let’s go get me my coffee. You got me wanting it. We go together though.”

Jamie started at the cotton strewed spewing from the chairs and sofas, falling onto the glass-covered floors. Every picture in his house had been thrown from their shelves and yanked from the walls with vengefulness. The entire place held a perfume of sourness so thick it stole his breath worse than seeing five years' worth of his life lying in ruins.

“All I smell is their vengefulness.” Michael came up beside him. “Do you catch any hint of anyone?”

He didn’t need to to know who had done it. Only one man held so much disdain for him and he had no reason to do so. He was the one who destroyed their lives. Not him. He was the one that dipped his . . .

“No.”

“Any idea who would hate you this much?”

“You have to ask?” Jamie picked up a stack of stuffing, letting it fall between his fingers.

“You mean . . . Why would he?”

“He’s a bastard from Hell who can hide his scent from our kind.”

“How can he . . . Oh, right. Warlock. Forgot that.”

Warlocks and Witches were able to cast a Cloaking Spell to block their presence from all, right down to their odor. The only way anyone, Werewolf, Vampire, or other Supernatural would be able to pick them up was if they cast a spell while under the cloak. Darrel Jefferson the Fourth held to much sense to give himself away. He would be on his tenth strike with the SPD if he got caught and they knew his scent all too well. Not to mention his father threatened to disown and disinherit him if he brought more dishonorable light to their name.

“You want to call the SPD?”

“Won’t do any good.”

He’d have to go about this in a more direct manner. A Werewolf to Warlock manner. Seemed like it’d be the only way Darrel would get the message. He’d have to be discrete about it, or he’d get himself in trouble.

Punch after punch a guy threw, sending vampires every which way as his knives sliced through the air with each kick he delivered, creating falling dust. He jumped and leapt out of the way, spinning this way and that way, dodging hits with such grace he looked like a preprogrammed robot. Otto never saw anything like it, nor had he ever been in a building that rained thick, hot blood before, which had him curling up like some coward in the corner of the large run-down dance room of an abandoned hotel room at some rave his ex-lover told him about.

What had he been thinking going somewhere Elias told him about? The man was so irresistible. Trouble with a capital T and could do nothing right. Why had he broken his six-month streak of remaining inside and away from people on the weekends?

Oh, right. He wanted companionship. He thought he might find someone. He’d found right the opposite. A world like nothing else.

“Sir, sir, are you okay?” A squeaky voice asked.

Otto looked up into the most dazzling pair of round, hazel eyes and lips that were beyond kissable. He bet they were soft and tender. He knew they had to be perfect to nipple on.

“Uh, thanks for the compliment. Can I take that as you are well enough to stand?”

“Oh shit! Did I say that out loud?”

“Yes, but I sort of like hearing my atractableness.” The mystery guy held his hand out. “Let me help you up. “What are you doing in a place like this?”

The water shimmered above him as he held his breath, counting to himself as fire consumed his chest. The people above him were taking too long. He was only able to hold his breath for twenty minutes whereas full-blooded Seamen held no restrictions. If only his father kept his dick in his pants when he was fifteen hundred years young.

“He has to be around here somewhere.” Ronnie, the one Java knew to be the ringleader of the Seamen Seek and Finders Group, said. “Did he get into that water?”

“Ronnie man, it’s not deep enough. It only goes up to my ankles.”

Good the guy didn’t know about the sinkhole in the middle of the washed-out area. What a break for him. Java didn’t get many of those, he’d take them when they came his way.

“There is nowhere else for him to be hiding around here.” Another person said.

How many had Ronnie brought with him? That was two different speakers, and Ronnie was known for traveling with at least five at all times, but did all of them follow him when he came after him? How did they even locate him? He’d stayed under the radar for the last sixty years and one hundred before then. He was talented at avoiding the Seaman Seek and Finders Group. A talent his father taught him. About the only thing he could thank the man for, besides giving him life. Then again, he wasn’t so sure he could go that far. His life sucked, majorly most of the time.

“Fine.” Ronnie’s wavering image faded out of sight from above him as the man stepped away from the semi-muddy puddle of water Java hid in. “Let’s go. We’ve lost him again. I swear to the Heavens Above, I will catch that piece of Seamen Fish Ass one day.”

Java would make sure his ass was dead and useless to him if he ever did. He wanted nothing to do with the cruelty the Seaman Seek and Finders delivered upon their captives. The rare few who survived their torture and found release were left a comatose shell of themselves. Those who escaped, which were even rarer, swore living a million and one days in the pits of Hell would be better than spending five seconds inside their walls. Java wanted nothing to do with what the Seaman Seek and Finders believed they were doing for society as a whole by capturing and studying the unusual species that walked out of the edge of the Florida coast two decades ago.

Bubbles began to flow from the corners of his lips, forcing Java to surface. It’d been quiet for several seconds. Java prayed Ronnie and his men were gone. As he surfaced, he felt the spear slam through his upper arm. His right hand flew up to the pole, yanking it free as he leapt from the water, floating over a short, choppy black-haired guy. He landed on the other side of him with his own knife pulled and held steady in front of him. A quick scan proved Ronnie only left one guy behind.

Happy Labor Day,

Hope all have had a great Summer and enjoy the last day of it. And for any of those college football fans, hope you've enjoyed the return of it. Now, it's time to take a small break and enjoy escaping into a short scene of creativity.

Hope you enjoy and are able to let your imagination soar.

He couldn’t believe he just shifted into a wolf. How had it been possible? How long had it been possible? Why had no one told him he’d be able to do so?

“All stupid questions, Sal.” He said to himself as he hung his head, staring at the shredded pile of clothing laying at his feet.

Simple answer to all the last one was he’d been dropped off at the rectory’s back door when he was two days old. As to the other two, he was sure no one around him thought such was possible. He sure hadn’t. Why would have his foster mother? Heck fire, she didn’t even have to let him remain with her after he turned eighteen and entered college last year. There is no way she’d do so if she knew he could shift into a wild animal. What was he going to do? How did he keep this a secret? Did he even have control over when he shifted? Lord haver mercy, there were so many questions forming and he had no one to answer them.

His hand flew to his chest. He leaned over, holding his stomach, taking in deep, short shallow breaths until he was dizzy and thought he’d pass out. The room began to fade into blackness when he felt a soft hand on his shoulder.

“Sal, I’m sorry I wasn’t here when it happened.”

“Rachael?”

“Yeah, sweetie. I’d planned to speak to you before it happened, but I didn’t think you’d have your First Shift for another month or so.”

“You knew.”

“Hurry,” Jimmy tugged me along the waterlogged sidewalk as he rushed us toward the theater.

“Why are we hurry to get to some horror flick?” I should never have agreed to go to it in the first place. He should never have asked to take me. He knew I hated those kind of movies.

“Come on you will love it. I promise, Norm.”

“Don’t call me that.” He also knew I despised my real name. He was about the only one who dared get by with calling me it. Okay, he was the only one, besides my mother when she was ticked off at me, who could get by with addressing me by it.

“I love your name, honey.” He yanked me under the awning of the Shadow Theater.

“See, no one else braved this God-awful weather to come see such a horrible movie,” I whined as he wrapped his arm around my waist, nuzzling my neck.

“I will be there to keep you safe and sound from all bogymen. I promise.” He nipped the hallow between my neck and shoulder. “Let’s get our tickets.”

“You don’t stop that display of affection, you won’t get into my theater.”

“Come one, Mr. Henderson,” Jimmy chuckled and held his hand out to old Mr. Henderson, who had owned the theater since before me and Jimmy were born. My mom told us Mr. Henderson had been a young man when he bought it when she was only a child.

“How’s this weather treating you, Mr. Henderson?” I gave him a nod as I stepped away from Jimmy, more out of respect than having to. Mr. Henderson didn’t care how much the consenting adults fooled around outside or inside his movie theater. It was the younger ones he cared about and those who did not consent that ticked him off the most. Still, I felt respect was demanded, even if he joked around with us each time he saw us.

“Weather is a bitch. Each time it rains or snows my old bones act up, but I’m not one to complain, I’m still up and moving, so I’m better off than most my age.” And he was. My mom, who was much younger than him was already bedridden, but she had a hard life full of triple jobs with double shifts most of the days to keep me and my two brothers supported after my father was killed by a drunk driver.

“Big night for you boys?”

“Nah, Sir. Just some old scary movie, which you could ban from your theater if it was okay by you.”

Mr. Henderson chuckled, winking at Jimmy, who gave him this humorous smile. One I only saw on my lover’s face when he was up to something.

“What’s going on, Jimmy?”

“What do you mean?”

“You gave yourself away, my little conniving lover.”

“Colton!”

Shoot. What had he done this time? Every time Jason shouted Colton’s name the two of them began bickering. Hank would rather them come to blows than shout and scream back and forth until the wee hours of the morning. He had to get some sleep. Some people did have to work to pay the bills. If only he could afford an apartment where the walls weren’t so thin he heard every move and sound his neighbors made.

“You worthless piece of crap!” Jason's words stung as they flowed through Hank’s bedroom wall and into his head.

A dark, red-haired woman might have well stood over his bed, waving a single sheet of paper with a single red mark on it shouting those very same words. His mom never let him forget how sorry of a person he would become for failing to get perfect scores on all assignments in school. Look where her berating got him, in the midst of a dump apartment, listening to a couple of men fight each night while he works his rear-end off each day to try and save up enough money for night school thanks to his mom gambling away what money his dad left him when he died.

The Eagle sat on the long, slender brown tree branch watching me through its unusual sky-blue eyes. It felt as if someone watched me from afar from a pair of binoculars. Creepy and eerie to the point a shiver ran down my spine. I jumped up from my swing porch and rushed inside, slamming my front door, and locking the deadbolt.

“Ronald is dead.” I whispered into the empty room, taking in two slow deep breaths, staving off the panic attack I felt tugging at me. “Ronald has been dead for five years.” I reminded myself a second time. “You killed him. You shot him dead the last time he invaded your home in Texas.”

I shoved the image of the blood gushing out of his chest and over his sides onto my shiny hardwood floors. It’d been a long time since those images had rushed my mind. It was understandable why they crashed to life then, but I didn’t need them bringing me to a standstill or causing my life to spiral out of control again. I’d spent two long years trying to regain my life after that awful night. I’d spent five days in the hospital after Ronald’s beating that horrid night.  The law in Texas tried to blame me for killing him, even though the evidence supported my self-defense. My father had hired the best lawyer in the world to defend me and he got me off, but not until after a yearlong trial, which would never had happened if Ronald hadn’t been the son of the Senator of Texas.

A soft knock on my door caused me to jerk away from the door all but leaping two feet into the air. Who in the world could it be? There’d been no crunching of gravel. No closing of car doors. No clomping of feet on the front porch. Where had someone came from?

“Who is it?” My voice came out as more of a croak.

“You have no reason to fear, Mr. Jameson.”

No one around here knew me by my given birthname. I’d changed it when I moved to some small town at the foot of some mountain in North Carolina. I wasn’t even sure of the name of the town I lived in. That’s how little I mingled among it. I knew the closest biggest city I lived near was some four hours away and that’s how I liked it. My nearest neighbor was half an hour away and I loved that. So where had this intruder of my space came from.

“I am here at the behest of Mr. Chamberland.”

That was a name I knew all too well. He’d been my lawyer and became a great friend of mine. Our close quarter work over that year and his aid in getting me help with my PTSD and depression was more of a help than my father had been to me. Oh, my father tried to aid me, but everything he did seemed to make things worse. He seemed to think telling me to get over it would work. It was laughable and aggravating at the same time.

I slid the chain across the door, still a bit caution because I didn’t know the man outside my door he could be anyone who knew to toss around the name of my friend and unlocked the door, opening it just a bit.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Andre Thomas, I am an associate of Mr. Chamberland. Mr. Chamberland sent me here to watch over you because there has been a bounty put out on you.”
