This week to find our mythical creature of the week we are traveling back to Egypt around 1600 BCE. There you find a serpent that curls around until it has his tongue in his mouth. This is said to represent the cycle of death and rebirth, eternity and renewal.

Mythical Creature of the Week

This week we take a look at the Ant-Lion. As you can guess he has a father as a lion and a mother as an ant. The combination led to him having a lion front and a back like an ant. Later descriptions came about the reason he was called an Ant-Lion. Those people believed he was called an Ant-Lion because he hid in the sand and hunted like a lion. No matter the case, in my opinion at least, the combination of parents created one very unique looking creature.

Sylph

Sylph, the elemental of air and wind. They look like beautiful, lively, slender young women. They are smaller than human women. In a mood and temperament they become changeable and unreliable. Supposedly they live among the top of mountains.

Mythical Creature of the Week: Thriae

Thriae , three Nymphs from Greek Mythology who are prophetic. Descriptions dating all the way back to the 7^th century BCE depicts them as having the head and upper body of  woman and the lower body of a bee including the wings. Apparently they lived under the Mount Parnassus and taught the divination to young Apollo.

The Nue is from Japanese Folklore and is sometimes called Japanese Chimera. It is a hybrid with many animals. A monkey head, body of a raccoon dog, legs of tiger, and a snakes’ tail. He can transfer into a black cloud and fly around. He brings misfortune and illness.

Mythical Creature – WampusCat

The Wampus Cat is an American folklore creature This creature is a half mountain lion and half woman who stalks the forest of Eastern Tennessee. The Cherokee believed it to be a beautiful Native American woman. This creature came about after a woman hid beneath a mountain lion to listen to the stories told by men around a campfire. A medicine man discovered her and punished her by transforming her into a monstrous cat. Now she roams howling to protect her fat and seeking revenge.

This is a list of the Heraldic Animals and their meanings.

-          Unicorn means extreme courage, virtue, and strength.

-          Griffin means death-defying, bravery in battles

-          Sphinx means omniscience and secrecy

Mythical Creature of the Week – Lamia

There are many kinds of mythical sexual predators among our world, the Lamia is more. She belongs among the Greek mythology and is a female demon who seduces sleeping men and devour children. There are many descriptions of her, all of which include her having a beautiful upper body. One story states that she was loved by Zeus, which earned her the vengeance of the jealous Hera, Zeus’s wife. Hera supposedly kidnapped her and murdered her children in revenge for the affair. This drove Lamia mad and into a cave, where her rage transformed her into a hideous monster who snatched children and sucked their blood.

Mythical Creature of the week:Tetramorph of Ezekiel

Ezekiel was a Hebrew prophet who had apocalyptic visions. While in exile he described four creatures, each with the body of a man, the face of a man, a lion, and ox, and an eagle. These creatures had a set of wings above their head and a set covering their bodies.

Mythical Creature of the Week – Mahisha

Mahisha is a buffalo-headed demon that was defeat by Hindu warrior goddess Durga. Mahisha threatened the Cosmic Order, stomping across the three worlds, polluting the Earth and Sea. Durga came into creation to defeat Mahisha, but in his arrogance he sent her a marriage proposal. Mihisah replied with the comment she would only marry the one who defeated her in battle. Course, a battle began.

Hipppocamp

I’m sure anyone who watched Percy Jackson – Sea of Monster will recall what today’s mythical creature is. To me it is one of the beautiful water creature I know of. (Not really saying much. I’m always finding a new mythical creature to inspire me.) For those who only know this animal by sight from the movie, here is a bit more information.

Hippocamp is a hybrid sea creature found in Greek, Phoenician, and Etruscan Mythology, Sometimes it is referred to sea horse, a beast with front half of a horse and the coiling scaly topside of a fish. The fact that interest me the most was that the Roman mosaics Hippocamps are covered in green scales and the winged Hippocamps pictured pulling Neptune’s (Poseidon) chariot.

I often wondered how come the Hippocamp was chosen for the Percy Jackson movie. I learned why when finding facts about his post. In Greek Legend of Jason and his Argonauts hunted the pat for the Golden Fleece they watched as a giant Hippocamp was unhitched from Poseidon’s chariot, then rose from the sea and galloped away, signally that they should follow.
