The food had been excellent. What shocked me even more than the earlier interaction with Coven Leader Oaks was the friendly conversation him and his son carried on while they ate. More than that was the lack of servents I saw in the house. Coven Leader Oaks even gathered up the dirty dishes and took them into the kitchen. He had his son carry his own plate in and he refused to let me do the same. He told me I was a guest and guest did not clean the table. After the meal was over, including apple pie and ice cream, Coven Leader Oak took his son down to his room and put him to bed. I could hear him reading his son a story and he told his son he loved him.
It all had me scratching my head. None of the coven leader actions fit with what I had experienced growing up. If I had things in my life might have been different. I would not have changed meeting Kyle for anything. Nope. The time I had with him was the best of my life. It was why I chose to save him. My life had not mattered to me then. All that had was getting Kyle away from the fire.
“Ready to hear my story?” Coven Leader Oaks motioned me to follow him. “Let’s sit in the living room. It will be more comfortable.” I followed and then went to stand off to the side of the fireplace. “Take a seat. I told you this coven is not like the one you grew up in.”
A fact I was learning quickly. One I still did not trust completely. I expected any day for the joke I feared they were playing on me to come to an end at my expense.
“Ten years ago, I was in the same spot you are.” He sighed. “When I turned twenty-five my father gave me the choice like all Magical Beings get. Human World, or Coven life. I knew what my father desired, but he also knew what I did. There was no big deal made when I chose to live in the Human World. I had openly told my father that I knew what the coven expected the son of the coven leader to choose, but I could not do so. It would make my life miserable. He accepted my choice and told me if I ever changed my mind that I would be welcomed back into the coven with open arms, but I would have to work my way up the ranks like any other coven member who returned to the Coven Life.”
I must have huffed, because Coven Leader Oaks smiled at me.
“It is a hard story for another son of a coven leader to buy. All children, even the second, or young children, of a leader are told and taught from the get-go. I was no different, but like myself, my father chose to run the coven in a less formal manner. I have kept that tradition alive and it will never change as long as my family runs the coven.” He leaned back on the couch and crossed his legs. “Less than a month in the Human World I ran into Jacob. Best man I ever knew. He had my heart from the first word out of his mouth. I knew he was mine. Lucky for me, I did not have to explain what I was, because he also had chosen the Human World lifestyle.”
Wow. Lucky was right. Wished I’d been in the same boat. Wouldn’t have helped me in the end. I still did magic around other humans, meaning the Elders had to erase any humans’ mind that had saw me and Kyle disappear from the fire. If any survived. I hoped some had, but I feared they had all parrished. I would never know. Not since I had been sent back to the coven.
“A year after we moved in together Jacob came up pregnant. We had to come back to my coven until he gave birth.”
A rule that all Human World Magical Beings followed. It avoided the Magical World from being made known to the humans. Also meant that they had to pretend that their son was adopted. I wasn’t sure if that was something I could have done if Kyle had been a Magical Being. My mind would have desired for everyone to know that we had a son together. That I had carried the life inside me for nine months. Yet . . . I knew why the Magical World had such a rule.
“A year after Joshua was born, the three of us was in a park. I was pushing Joshua on a child safety swing. He was giggling and swinging his arms. Having the best time of his life. Just like we longed for him to have. After an hour of park time, I decided it was time to head back home. We made it halfway back when a group of men surrended us. Jacob stepped in front of the stroller and I moved in front of them. Tried to talk the people into leaving us alone. Gave them all the money I had, but it was not good enough. They had not wanted money. They were after pure fear. They had it from Jacob. I could feel his desire to get Joshua to safety. He begged and pleaded with me to get us out of there. I did not want to do so. I knew the risk, but I thought I could handle the situation. I was wrong. There were six guys against me. Jacob had thrown himself over the stroller when the guys charged me. I took on the five that circled me. One came after Joshua and he did what any father would have done. Tried to get our son to safety. He took hold of the stroller and began running the other way. He made it back to the park before he was caught by the guy. I finally got the five around me down and left to get to my family. By the time I got there Jacob was down and the guy was going after Joshua. I had no other choice.”
Shit. I wasn’t sure what I would have done if I found myself in that situation. Yes I did. I would have zapped me and my son to safety. I would have saved my son. Just like I saved Kyle. I would not have stood by and let a group of men attack my family, even if I was not the stronger Magical Being.
“I can tell you would have done what I did in the end. I regret my decision to avoid being sent back to live in the coven. My decision cost me that day. I will regret that day until the day I die. I took my son’s father from him. I took the love of my life from myself. Being sent back to the Coven World would have been better than losing Jacob.” He wiped his eyes, making me take a deep breath. Coven leaders did not cry. Did not show so much emotions in front of anyone, let alone a Disgraced Magical Being. “You can see that I do know the spot you are in. Sort of. I knew my father’s coven was different than others. I knew they would not turn their back on me. They would not treat me and Joshua like other Disgraced Magical Beings. My father had promised me that if I had to return to the Coven World for any reason that the Elders would allow me to come back to him. He had made the request, and it had been approved, before I even left for the Human World. Don’t get me wrong. I might have come back to my home coven, but I had to work my way from the bottom of the coven. Just like my father told me I would. I worked hard. Quickly moved through the ten steps of the coven. Soon as I reached the leadership level my father announced me as his heir. It was something I expected the Elders to kick on, but they stood by my father’s decision.”
Wow. The story was hard to believe, but the tingles in my arms promised me that I could believe what the guy said. Not only that, I could see the pain in his eyes. On his face. Those strong feelings could not be faked. Not good enough to trick me. Coven Leader Oaks was indeed like me. Knew what I had gone through. Knew how hard it had been for me to choose the Human World. There was a major difference. My father had immediately told the coven that his heir was my brother, who was two years young than me.
“I tell you this, hoping that it will give you some peace and allow you to begin to interact more with the coven members. I won’t promise that there aren’t some among the coven that will see you as equal, but they will not go against our way of life. They know the punishment if they do.”
The rest of the evening went by easier, but tension still clung to me while I sat and spoke in such a friendly manner with the coven leader.

I arrived at the location that Coven Leader Oak told him to. The house was simple. Was not grand looking, or large. Just another typical size house. It held a clean coat of tan paint and had a porch with large block style post. There was a swing on the left side and toys spread across the right side. A football. Skateboard. Helmet. Kneepads. Trucks. All typical things for an eight-year old. Sure wasn’t like any other coven leader’s house he saw before. Theirs held no toys. Most of their children were forbidden to play with such menial items. They were given tablets, taught to work a computer from the time they started to learn to read. I knew from personal experience. Not that I liked to remember those times. It was best forgotten. It did nothing but irate me.
I shook away the thoughts and knocked on the door. It was yanked open by a waist high semi-brown haired boy.
“Hey. You are Jay, right?”
“Joshua Leon Oaks, you know better than to answer that door.” Coven Leader Oaks came into the hallway, smiling at him. “Sorry, about that.” He waved me in. “He has more energy than I can keep up with at times. Hope your day is going well.”
“It is, Sir.”
“None of that now.” He held his hand out to me. “It is Thomas. Just a simple man. That’s all I am.”
Jay took his hand, caustiously. I did not think he would do me any harm while his son was there, but . . . no sense in letting my guard down.
“Joshua, go wash up for supper.”
“Yes, daddy.”
I watched the young boy rush into a room down the hallway. It was nice to see a child of a coven leader so free spirited and happy.
“Not what you expected.” Coven Leader Oaks waved me into the room he’d exited earlier. “Take a seat at the table while I get the last piece of steak off the stove.”
Steak? Wow. I had never seen a coven leader serve a guest anything so grandious, especially not to a Disgraced Magical Being. Not like I’d ever heard of one like myself being invited to supper with the coven leader and his family. I was taken back by it all. My nerves were high, making me rub my wrist so much they ached. My stomach felt like a pound of vomit sat there waiting for the right moment to make itself known. My mouth tasted like a ton of sand had been shoved inside it.
“Take your seat, Joshua.”
Joshua pulled the seat out beside me and rested his arms on the table as Coven Leader Oaks sat a plate of nicely browned steak in the middle of the table between a huge bowl of salad and a plate of foil covered potatoes. The mere sight of it all had me standing up and rushing down the hallway. I was inside the room I saw Joshua enter earlier and over the commode within a second.
A light knock had me turning my head as I stood and wiped my mouth.
“Wash rags next to the sink is clean.” Coven Leader Oaks gave me a faint smile, making my stomach drop, but I had nothing else to throw up. Thankfully. I had all ready showed how lousy of a Disgraced Magical Being I was. “You are still skittish of being here. I should have waited until I knew you were more comfortable with our coven. I am sorry for putting you in this position.”
I cut the tap on and wet the rag, wiping it across my mouth and around the back of my neck. The coolness eased some of the heat radiating from my skin. Nerves sucked. My lack of steal will was why my father promised I would never amount to anything. It was always why I chose to live among the humans, instead of staying with my family. Not like I fit in there anyway. Not like they let me forget it either.
“I had hoped that you could take peace from being here. I know it is very different than how you grew up, but . . .”
His kindness did nothing to ease my distress. It only put me on guard more and that was not a good thing. Once I reached my limit my mouth ran away. And it did exactly that.
“Is this some kind of trick? If so, I am thoroughly embarrassed. You can stop the kindness. I can take whatever you and your coven can give. It’s not like I did not come here expecting anything other than what I knew would happen to me. I made my decision among the human world and I will always stand by it. I will take my punishment and accept whatever comes with it. I knew what being a Disgraced Magical Being entailed. Still, I saved the man I loved. I will never regret it.”
Coven Leader Oaks came into the bathroom and spun me to face him. My entire body said to step back. Brace for impact. Attack back. I knew better. I’d just said I would take whatever came my way and I meant it. So I stood there and waited for him to strike me. What I got had me falling to my knees.
His hand brushed against my cheek. “This is no joke.” Those soft hands took hold of my arms and tugged me back to my feet. “I might have rushed things with you. I should have expected it to be harder for you to believe what I said. I knew your background. Knew your decision was not regretted. I also know what you it took to do what you did. I know you do not and never would regret it. And I mean I know.”
“How?” I was tired of the insuination of the leader’s personal knowledge of my actions.
“I did the same thing several years back.”
“I’m not fool.” I finally gave into my body’s desire to step back.
“I know that. Come sit down. Let’s eat. Let me put my son to bed, then I will tell you my story.”
“What do I have to lose. Not like I can tell you no.” I stepped around him and returned to the kitchen.

I’d been at the Clive Coven for a couple of weeks. Elder Robert had brought me in during the middle of the night. The Coven Leader did not even bother to greet me. His excuse had been that he’d been caring for his sick son for four nights and was watching over him while he finally got some sleep. Jay wasn’t sure if it was the truth, but if it was, I felt for the leader. Elder Robert had accepted the Cover Leader’s reason and told the second that he appreciated him getting up to show the Disgraced Magical Being around. Not that the second did so. All he done was nod at Elder Robert and then escorted me to a run down little shack. He never spoke to me. Simply opened the door and motioned me in, then shut the door and left. The next morning a young woman showed up on my doorstep as I opened the empty cabinet doors. She’d told me she’d been told to show me to the Kitchen. Jay had expected to be given the duty of landscaping, since that was a job I’d done while in my first coven, but nope. I’d been put to washing dishes. The lowest of jobs. I did as expected and worked hard. Did my best. Least I knew that there was an opportunity to work my way to prepping food, or so the Chef said.
I expected people to ignore and sidestep me unless they had to interact with me. Some had, others had welcomed me. Those had told me they hoped I settled in quickly and that I would like Coven Leader Thomas. I hoped I did, but I’d yet to meet him. Part of me hoped I never met him. I did not want to hear the leader berate me for my action and risk of outing them or telling me that I was nothing among the coven. Not like I didn’t already know that. I’d knew the risk when I saved Kyle. I’d do it again.
“Hello.” A tall, broad chest, rich brown hair man came up to his side.
Jay stopped walking and gave a slight nod.
“I’m assuming you are Jay Walker. Is that not correct?”
I gave another nod.
“It is all right to speak to me. I will not harm you in any way.”
Jay wasn’t sure about that. I knew some had spoken to me kindly, but they’d mostly been women. The men had done their best to avoid me or frown at me. In my first coven I say many Disgraced Magical Beings beaten. Some of them even went without food. I’d not faced that yet. The young woman who showed me to my job, also told me that the storage shed had been given my weekly stipend and each week I work my pay would be added to it. The local store also had access to my stipend if I desired knew clothes or other personal items.
“Please do not make me order you to speak to me.”
“Order me?”
“You . . . Crap. I knew it had taken me too long to seek you out.” The man rubbed the back of his neck and then held his hand out. “I am Coven Leader Thomas Oaks. People here call me Thomas. We are not a formal pack, unless the Elders are around.”
I assumed the coven was different than my first pack, but I’d never believed the leader would allow people to address him by his first name.
“I promise you no harm will come to you here.”
None had, but I wasn’t stupid enough to let two weeks in residence give me a sense of peace in my new situation.
My new leader lowered his hand. “If anyone gives you a hard way to go then please reach out to me. Understand.”
“Yes, Coven Leader Oaks.” There was no way I would risk calling him Thomas. He might say he could, but . . .
“You will find out that we do not agree with how the other coven treat Disgraced Magical Beings. You are no different than any other member of the coven. I know this well.”
How could he know? He was a leader. He had chosen to live among the coven.
“I can see the doubt on your face, but I just ask that you watch and find out for yourself. I do not expect you to believe me. I know how the Rexman Coven treat their Disgraced Magical Beings. It is inhumane.”
Was not giving him a shack to live in inhumane? Might not be. Least I had roof over my head. Food. Getting paid for my time in the kitchen. Regular amount of wage in fact. Another fact that shocked me.
“Most covens live by harsher rules than I believe in. It is why you will find that over one-third of the members have come to my coven as punishment. Each of their stories are thiers, but I can tell you that among those are many Disgraced Magical Beings. A word that I despise. Far as I’m concerned you are simply another Magical Being.”
I wasn’t sure how much I believed that, but some of what I’d experiences gave me proof of what the coven leader said. Still, I was not going to risk the wrath of the coven leader.
“It is fine if you have to find out for yourself. I just wanted to apologize for taking so long to greet you. My son was sick for over a week with the flu. I sat at his bedside, watching over him every night. The night you showed up was the first day he had not been sick all day, so I allowed myself to sleep. I’m afraid that threw me behind in my other work and I had to play catch up.”
Was the coven leader truly giving me a detail explanation? Why? No other would. They would not have bothered with introducing themselves.
The coven leader glanced at his watch. “Afraid I have a meeting, but I’d like for you to join me and my son for supper tomorrow night. Is that agreeable?”
“Huh?”
“It is not trick. I promise. Just a simple meal with an eight-year old and me.”
“Okay.” I wasn’t sure why I agreed. Yeah, I did. I had no other choice.

Crazy day didn’t fit. Life upside down didn’t fit. Nothing could described the early spring day. It started out like any other day. I got up. Got dressed. Ate my granola bar. Fed the dog and left for work. Sat down behind my desk to work on the story I was editing. Like with most authors the story was written well and there were little mistakes to be marked. Loved those kind of authors, because it made my job easy and enjoyable. Allowed me to get lost in the content and the life of the characters. Not the best aspect for an editor, but hey, when a writer knew how to draw someone into a new world there was no other option but to go along for the ride. I had gotten so far into the character’s life that I lost track of time and didn’t even realize anything major was going on around me until someone yelled my name.
“Jay! Jay! Get your ass up.”
I glanced around to find pandomium around me. My coworkers was grabbing everything they could from their desk and rushing towards the emergency exit. When Kyle ran past me and snagged my arm, tugging me down the small one person aisle I caught the hint of smoke.
“What’s on fire?”
“Does it matter?”
Kyle kicked open the emergency exit and we were welcomed with a hoard of people screaming and slamming into one another as they scuttled back up the stairs. Kyle spun me around and shoved me back into our office area.
“There’s another stairway on the other side.”
Ripples of dark gray clouds flowed through the emergency exit doorway as the people who had tried to escape returned. Screams. Shouts for clarification of where they should go next. Consumed the office. People coughed and gaged, but Kyle kept shoving me down the aisle. I forced myself to come up to his side, taking a second to glance up at him. His face was red and his cheeks were wet with water. He wasn’t crying, or he might have been. It didn’t matter either way to me. What did was getting him to safety.
“Damn it.” Kyle glanced around the room. “There is no other way out of here.”
There was, but it mean exposing myself, which equaled harsh punishment.
“Do you know of any other way to get out of here?” Kyle pressed his face against the window, sighing. “Why are there no . . .”
We were twenty floors up and both stairways was consumed with smoke. There was only one way for us to get out of this alive. Me. Damn it. What was going to happen to me? What would Kyle think? How would I explain myself?
“Jay,” Kyle tugged me into his arms, pressing me closer than he had ever done before. He’d never done so in front of anyone. Not even our best friends. No one knew we had been dating for over two years. No one knew we longed to have an open relationship. We would have if Kyle’s family would not disown him. Not even I wanted to piss off Kyle’s family. They were well known for termination the ones who messed with them. Even if it was family. Kyle being the next in line to run the Lawson Empire would not have mattered. All his family would have seen was a disgraceful act of betrayal. Kyle’s life had been planned out for him since he was born. His marriage had been carefully picked from other large empires among the US. Kyle and me knew that our time together would be short lived since he had to marry some woman when he turned twenty-five.
“Least I won’t have to marry Leslie.” Kyle rubbed his chin across my head.
Wish that was true. I would not let Kyle die. I loved him. I could save him. “I can get us out of here.” I whispered against his chest.
“There is no way out, love.”
“There is.”
“Where? Will it allow us all to get out of here?”
I wish I could, but my talent was still growing and my magic was thin. My spell would be strong enough to transport the two of us, but . . . as much as I wished I could rescue all the people we worked with. I couldn’t, but I could and would save Kyle.
“You trust me?”
“You know I do.”
“Then hang onto me tight and close your eyes.” I wrapped my arm around him, crossing my arms and leaving my palms up. “Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, I pull on your wonderful skills to aid me in returning home.”
“What . . “
Kyle’s words fade away as the air around us swirled until it wrapped us into a blanket of safety. The area around us grayed out and then lightened until we stood in my living room.
“You okay?” I ran my hands up Kyle’s back, leaning back enough I could stare up at him.
His face was white as a sheet, but the tip of his ears was red, telling me all I need to know. He was pissed at me. I would not only be in trouble for using my magic in front of him, but he was not pleased with how I saved us.
“What did you do?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“I got us to safety.”
“How?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.” Kyle took two huge steps back from me. “Why did you not help the others? So many people were in there. We knew them all.”
“I could not.”
“You got us out of there.”
“My . . . I couldn’t. I’m sorry. I wanted to, but you - -“
“I am not more important than anyone else.”
“You are to me.” I reached out behind me, balancing myself against the back of my sofa. “You are to your family.”
“How did you get us out of there?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Why not?”
“You would not believed me.”
“I would.”
“I still can’t tell you. Not without permission.”
“From who?”
“People over me.”
“You let no one rule you.” Kyle sighed and walked over to the recliner that sat halfway across the room. “You never have. Fuss at me for letting my family run my life.”
Couldn’t argue with that. I sure gave Kyle hell about how his family controlled him. Told him what to do. When to move. What would happen. Still, I could not explain to him. If he would accepted me completely I could have gained permission to do so, but . . . I knew from the get-go that Kyle would never be mine.
“I’m waiting.”
“I’m sorry, Kyle, but I can’t explain. You have to follow your family law and I have to follow the ones over me.” I knew it would not be acceptable to Kyle, but there was nothing I could do about it.
“That is not acceptable to me.” Kyle stood and kicked his legs out, crossing them.
“Don’t’ go all boss on me.”
I hated when Kyle fell into his future roll of you do as I say or hell will reign down on you. I was not one of his father’s cronies and he knew how I felt about him treating me in such a disrespectful manner. I had saved his life because I love him and I knew he loved me, even if he could not chose to spend his entire life with me.
Before he could respond to me the room filled with ten navy blue robed people. I fell to my knees and bowed my head. I knew I had to face the music, but I had not expected them to enter in such a flamboyant manner. It wasn’t their normal style. Kyle’s reaction was typical though. He had jumped up and vaulted over the sofa, blocking anyone from me.
“Elders, it is - -“
“Hush.”
Elder Robert floated in front of Kyle and touched his head. Kyle crumpled forward, but instead of landing in the floor, he floated over to the sofa and was lowered onto it.
“Thank you, Elder Robert.”
“You know you crime?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“You know your punishment.”
I did. I knew it when I did it. I had forfeited my time among the human world. I would be forced to return to the coven and live under the thumb of others. I would be nothing to the ones who had lived there for their entire life. No one would take notice of me. Far as they would be concerned I was simply a disgrace among the coven. Those who chose to live among the human world and was sent back to the coven as punishment was nothing. No one. Just a strain on a coven.
“Was it worth it?”
“I would do it again, and again.”
“Why?”
“I love him.”
“Why not make him yours?”
“He has other obligations.”
“He will not choose you then.”
Words stung, but were pure truth. I could not speak it. Every time I thought it, someone stabbed a knife through my heart. Saying the words would only break me more than knowing I would neve be able to marry Kyle.
“He will not remember you.” Elder Robert snapped his finger and Kyle faded away. I knew he was not harmed. He had simply been sent home. He would not remember me, the fire, or anything related to our love. His life would simply be void of a few memories. I on the other hand would always know what I had lost. “It is time to go.”

Arch after arch of lighting swirled my way. I wasn’t sure what to do, besides hide behind the huge boulder that sat in the middle of my little town of Midway. Midway held only five hundred people, so everyone knew everyone, but I had not clue who the two throwing lighting bolts at one another was. The one closest to me, who appeared to be guarding me, had appeared out of thin air when the huge dark skinned man exited the abandoned thrift store. That only had caught my attention. No one had been seen inside that place since the fire eradicated two-thirds of it some ten years ago. The town never figured out who had started the fire, or who truly owned the building. It had been held in a trust by some huge coporation in New York. Not that Mayor Chance did much investigating into the owners. He just believed it was the fate of God for the place to burn and until someone came to inspect their property then he could care less that it sat there.
“You okay?” The seven foot man screamed over his shoulder as he deflected another bolt of lightening with one of his own. “Can you hear me?”
“You talking to me?” Why? I did not know him. Didn’t really want to, either. I mean the man was fighting with lighten bolts that shot out of nowhere and he came from nowhere. Literally. Out of the air. Poof. Empty space turned into a seven-foot man with shoulder length wavy brown hair.
“Who else would I be talking to, my love?”
My love? He sure wasn’t talking to me. That was for sure. I didn’t know him. I wasn’t his anything. Nope. Not anything to anyone. Besides a small blemish and a throw away to my huge rich family. Sucked to be me, but didn’t either. I never had the drawn to be some big time, rich snob who took advantage of everyone they came into contact with. Nope. Not me at all. I was the kind, caring, and giving man from my family. That was strike one against me. The second and final strike was that I was gay and had openly admitted it when I was fifteen years old. My parents would have thrown me out on my giving ass if they could have came up with a legal way to do so. Nope. Instead I was ignored and left to fend for myself. Not that I minded. I’d managed to make a great life for myself. I wasn’t rich. Wasn’t a snob. Found ways to give back to the small town that my family came from. Just like me, my family had abandoned the town after they struck it rich in the stock-market.
“My love, you have to answer me.”
“I’m not your love.” I watched as a huge bolt of fire raced towards the seven-foot man. It never came close to him. It flickered out, then came back to life racing in the opposite direction, right back to the man who had somehow conjured it and sent it flying their way.
“We’ll discuss that late. Just let me know if you were hit by anything before I got here?”
“No.” Wasn’t sure why I answered him, but I did. Not like it was a major inconvencie to tell him I wasn’t hurt.
“Good.” The man snapped his fingers and a long black handled sword appeared in his hand.
“What’s that for?”
“Going to take Irony Blaster down. Once and for all.”
“Who?” I ducked as a huge bolt of lightening zipped past the seven-foot man, but it richocheeted backwards before it reached me. “What in the world is going on?”
“I’ll explain soon as I . . .” The man faded away.
“Where . . .” I didn’t have time to finish my question because I saw him reappear behind the dark skinned man and the sword swung across, slicing through the dark-skinned man’s head.
Silence consumed the area. No wind blew. No animals chirp. The hum of the light that stood in the center of town didn’t even emitte its normal high pitched screeching sound. Everything was just irie.
“Ready for an explanation,” the seven-foot man held a hand out to me.

Lamia’s . . . half serpent, half woman. A sea monster. What was the third strike against her? Oh, right. A she-demon who was expected to settle down and procreate, who desired the flesh of a woman, instead of a man. In her family’s eyes she was  a total failure, hence the reason they had dragged her in front of Lucifer to ensure their daughter did her family duty. Not like it would matter either way, she was the baby of the family. Her brother had the responsibility to carry on the family name. Her eldest sister had the responsibility to ensure her husband’s family name was carried on. She was the last child born. She had no responsibility, in her eyes. Her mom said her place among the family was no different than any other  sibling. She was to marry a respectful demon and give him a child, or three. Her mom and dad did not care that the idea of a man repulsed her.
“Hey, Diane.”
A sexy, squeaky voice had her spinning around. “What are you doing here?”
“Thought you had me summoned to support you.”
“No.” Shit. This was not good. No one was supposed to know about Teke.
“Diane,” her mother came to her side and glanced back at Teke. “It looks like your friend came to remind you to do your duty.”
What? Why would her mom . . . She tilted her head from side-to-side, taking in her mom’s dead-on stare at Teke.
“I knew that she would support us.”
Support them? There was no way Teke would do such. Teke and her had been more than best friends for the last six years. Everyone thought they shared an apartment, but they shared a room. A life. They were a family. One no one knew about thanks to her father.
“You had me summoned?”
“No, Teke. I did.” Lucifer had all three of them kneeling. “Stand. Come in. Let’s get this over with.”
Diane let her mom enter first, then stood back and waited for Teke to enter. Wasn’t the wisest move on her part, but she would not step on her woman’s toes and Teke was the dominate among their relationship.
“I like to see that.” Lucifer pointed at her and then the love seat. “Teke, join Diane. Mrs. Smarts take a seat in front of my desk.”
“Yes, My Lord.” Her mom bowed and took her seat. “I think you for - -“
“I did not meet with you for the reason you believe I did.” Lucifer came to stand in front of them. He gave them a dead-on stare that had Diane’s entire body shivering. “It has been a long time since we had a couple of your two caliber.”
What? She glanced over at Teke, finding the same shock on her face as she felt running through her. That might have been what kept her attention focused on Lucifer, but her mom gasped and sprang to her feet. Diane did not get to hear what all her mother was going to spout at her thanks to Lucifer and a snap of his finger.
“Sit. Remain there.”
“You two thought no one knew.”
Teke gave a small bow.
“Families can make situation intense.”
That they could.
“When Mrs. Smarts brought her complaint against me, I knew it was time I stepped in. there is now way that I would separate a set of true mates just to appease a mother and father’s desire. Not when there are other sibling to carrying on their family name.”
“Really?” Diane winced when Teke elbowed her. “Sorry, Sir. Sorry, Teke.”
“I have to admit, you two did keep it hidden until the last year. Even then, your family and friends did not catch onto the state of things between you. I believe it was time for the entire world to know what lay among them. Your type of mates are rare and a great value to our world.”
“How so, Sir?” Teke took hold of her hand, and pride rushed through Diane as no need to jerk her hand away from her lover came to life. She’d wanted for so long to let the entire world know about her feelings for Teke.
“Long story and one that only you two need to hear about.” Lucifer faced her mother. “As you can see, I will not be ordering your daughter to marry anyone, other than her true mate. No leave us be.”
Diane couldn’t believe the red faced woman who rushed from the room, muttering about it being unfair. That she would tolerate her daughter debasing their family in such a manner. Thankfully, it was not up to her. Lucifer had the last say and he stated his stance on the situation in front of him pretty clearly.

Jessica slipped under the water, letting it rush over her head, soaking in the gliorous sun heated miracle required to keep her ability to shift between human and her mermaid side. Sucked at times, but she would not give up her sea for the best fuck in the world. Then again . . . she had. Sort of. Her and Mitchel only made it to the ocean three or four times a year. Her father and mother cursed her decision to move inland after she found her chosen one among the humans. But she’d had no choice. Not if she wanted to keep her man. Mitchel’s job required him to live in the Big Apple and he got little time off. Since Mermaids couldn’t get licences there was noway for her to drive herself to the ocean.
She missed her family, but loved her mate. She knew her mom and dad missed her, but they understood. Her mom had been the only Princess that found her mate among the mermen. The other six had moved to the town next to ocean. They had access to the water twenty-four seven if they desired so. She only got three weeks a year, and even then, part of those three weeks were spent doing the tourist thing with Mitchel. She did not resent it one bit. It hurt her chest to think of all the time she was missing with her family, but life was life and she would not change it for anything.
“Hey, Jessica.” Her mom threw her long mane over her shoulder. “When did you arrive?”
“Like you don’t know.” Jessica and Mitchel ran across her aunt right after checking into their hotel. Just her luck that Aunt Raqueal had a telepathic link with her sisters.
“We get to see you so little. We miss you.”
“I know mom, but - -“
“You could live here and let him work inland.”
“Mom.” It was an argument they had every time she was in town.
“What? A mother worries. You would know if your mate - -“
“Do not go there.” Another argument they had each time. Her mom wanted grandchildren and may no qualms about letting Jessica know that she felt her mate was being selfish in not taking time to make them. Not the truth, but her mother would never understand her reasoning behind waiting to bring children into the world. Mitchel and her had discussed it over and over and neither of them wanted to bring children into their family dynamics until he made partner. That way he could have more time for family life.
“Fine.” Her mom threw her hands up. “You going to come for supper tonight?”
“Not tonight.” Jessica dipped her head under the water and waved towards the shore, where Mitchel stood beside Aunt Raquel. “Got plans with your sister.” She hugged her mom and dove under the water, heading back to the shore.

It was finally time. I couldn’t believe it. Tonight Michael would learn my biggest secret. The only one I kept from him. I had never outright and lied to him, but avoidance can be viewed as lying. He just hoped Michael understood why he done so. Wasn’t like I wanted to, but I had to have permission from my Coven leader to mate him before I could inform him of my Witch ability. Not like I wanted to be a witch. My coven pretty much disowned me, which was another reason I had to wait a year and half to gain permission from Coven Leader Adams. He swore if I could not participate in the most basic meeting then I had no reason to rush into a mating. Ass jerk.
“Uh ho.” Michael shut the door behind him and leaned against it, letting his long body draw my full attention. “I know that look. What happened?”
Crap. Not how he’d wanted to start the night off. “Just thinking very hard.” Too hard if he picked up on my mood. “Come one, I’ve got a nice meal laid out and a night of fun planned.” I hoped fun was how they ended the night. It would devastate me if Michael rejected me. Shit. I should have participated in my cover a pit more than I had. If my own lack of ability to be part of a group of witches meant I couldn’t have my mate then I’d . . . there was no telling what I might do.
“Come on, sweetheart.” Michael slipped his arm around me and kissed my cheek. “Keep those deep thoughts at bay, or I will tickle you until they run screaming.”
“No. please don’t.” I gave my usual response to Michael’s attempt to brighten my mood. Man didn’t realize that one look at him and my entire world lit up light a Christmas Tree.
“Seriously, do we eat, or talk first.”
“Talk.” If I ate first I might just lose my nerve and I would not do that. “Let’s sit down at the table then I’ll explain what’s on my mind.”
