Calvin slid into the booth, latching his eyes onto the man who hovered above him. It’d been three weeks since the tall, muscle bound, god-like man had taken him from his home. I’d tried to free myself, but . . . he bore some kind of inner troll like persona. At first I thought it was a mask, but the one time I got him on his back I’d yanked at his hair, but all he did was scream and knock me across the room. Lesson learned. Man out powered me even when on the ground from a sneak attack.
“Do not move.”
I nodded.
“I’ll be watching and you do not want to make me out myself while I’m among all these humans. It would not be good for them, or you.”
Bet so. “Learned my lesson.”
“Good. Remain seated until I come back with food.”
Least he was giving me food as he drove us across country. From my recollection we’d driven half way across the states. I watched him as he walked up to the counter. Won’t like, standing up and running out the door, or screaming for help crossed my mind, two or three times, but each one I squashed. No sense in brining others into the mess that landed on my doorstep at four in the morning. Whatever that mess was.
“Here. Eat.”

Been a long week. Boy had it. Time flew by, yet crept. Never in my life had I felt as bad as yesterday. Who knew a migraine could sideline you for an entire week. Not me. Not any of my kind. We did not get sick, unless . . .
Lack of magic. Meant being away from my magic for a year was starting to take a toll on me. Next I would be catching common colds. Never understood why my kind shortened their life expectancy if they stopped using their magic. I knew it would happen, but . . . part of me thought it was some kind of fairytale. Boy was I wrong. But it was worth it. For sure.
“Jonathan, you feeling better?” Ray stood in the middle of the doorway, refusing to cut the overhead light on.
“Come on in.” The sweet endearment hung on the tip of my tongue. Couldn’t say it though. He made it clear when he moved in two years ago that he did not tolerate magic. Wasn’t sure why, but I knew that moment that I would have to take care of my magical abilities somewhere else. A year ago Ray realized what I was doing each Saturday when I was supposedly going out on dates. As if I could have done that. From the second week Ray moved in, my eyes had been fixed on him. No one else came close to the warm-hearted, caring, giving, loving man. Not like he saw me as anything more than a very close friend and roommate. Still I would not disrespect my feelings for him. Nope. Couldn’t. Wouldn’t.
“Headache gone?”
“Yes.”
“Good.” Ray came into the room, taking a seat beside me on the bed, patting the top of the comforter that covered me. Warmth soaked in with each bit of contact. Soothed my heart and made the sideeffects of not using magic more than worth it. “I know why this came about.”
Shit. “What then?”
“Don’t play coy with me.” Ray sighed. “You stopped using your magic. For me. Didn’t you?”
Lying was another thing I could not do to Ray, so he got a small nod.
“Thought so. No one . . . not something . . .  Why?”
Silence was my answer.
“I’m just a roommate. Why stop living your life?”
Silence answered for me again.
“I know why. Not sure why I didn’t see it before now.” Another deep sigh. “Yes I do. I’ve kept you at arms length since I found out you bore magical powers. It wasn’t fair of me. Wrong of me to let my . . . history with magic to control you and my life for so long.”
Was I finally going to discover why he disliked magic? Hoped so.
Ray ran a hand over his face, groaning. “I do not want you to forgo your magic because my brother made my childhood hell.”
“How so?”
“He was the only one in my family who bore that talent. The rest of us were . . . just . . . normal. He never tested his skills on my parents, thankfully, but I wasn’t off limits while he was being taught his newfound powers.”
No wonder. Learning wasn’t meant to be taken out on others. It was supposed to be done in theory until you made it through all the materials. By then, you were taught what was good and bad usage of magic. I’d known some though my learning that practiced their skills, but most of them came from magical families. Had expectations to live up to. Like I did. Me not using mine had caused a huge stain on my family, or so my parents swore.
“I do not want you to stop your magic. You are not my brother and I . . . I . . . ca - - care too much for you to do that to you.”
“Care?”
“You know how I feel for you.”
“I don’t.”
“Then let me . . .” Ray’s lips were against mine before I could ask him to finish his thought.

Flash Fiction Part 6

“If you are not aware,” Clan Head Roberts walked in front of the line we formed. “The selection contains two parts. Magical Abilities.” One I can manupliate in my favor. “And . . . Physical Aspects.” What? Was he going to study our bodies? How? I will not get naked. “Each task is designed to test each of your abilities. I know more about each of you than even you know. Or admit to yourself.” He nailed me with a stern look. “I will be able to tell if you are not being honest with yourself or me.” He made his way over to the chair that Alex the Grand had sat in front of us. Might as well said me. Clan Head Roberts had placed me in the middle of the line. “We will start with Tex Granfall.”
Damn. Granfall was a very strong and powerful family among the magical world. He would make a great mate for Clan Head Roberts. There was no way Clan Head Roberts would chose someone with less power and fame than a Granfall. I was perfectly same.
“Come forward.”
Tex did as instructed, letting his hands fall to his side. “Sir.”
“Easy.” Clan Head Roberts lifted one of the wands from the table beside him. “I desire to see how well you can protect yourself.”
“This is not my wand, Sir.”
“Does that matter?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“Why?”
“Each of us have by now created a bond with our wand. It is the best way to protect ourselves. Using someone elses wand will weaken our talent.”
“In some cases.” Clan Head Roberts passed the wand to Alex the Grand. “Give this to him and begin.”
Damn. This wasn’t going to be good. I didn’t need to know what Tex said was against the grain. Any magical being should be able to quickly adapt to using any wand within their reach. In a battle you could not promise that your wand would be the closest one. Nope. If you are disarmed then you reach for the first weapon at your side. Any wand would do. Damn. Clan Head Roberts was looking for something specific in the one he chose. Not being the first gave me a bit of insight into how I needed to handles thing.
One by one, each guy came to face off with Alex the Grand. None disarmed him. They tried, but they held no true power behind the wand they were given. The results might have been totally different if they had been able to use the wand they grew up with, but . . . not the point of the test that Clan Head Roberts gave them.
“Quinn, your turn.” I walked up and took the wand from him. Let it hang at my side as I walked back to the taped X. “Face Alex.” I did as told and before I could even blink Alex threw a knock down spell. I could have escaped the simple attack, but I didn’t even lift my wand. Simply let it hit me and fell on my ass. “Quinn, you are way stronger than that. Now show me what you can do.”
“Sir, this is not my - -“
“Do not give me that. Do as instructed. Again, Alex.”
A streak of red scored the airwaves between me and Alex. Heat Searing spell. Would hurt like shit, but I had to make sure that Clan Head Roberts saw what I wanted him to. Since I’d been admonished for not lifting my wand, I cast a simple counter spell that I knew would not detour Alex The Grand’s spell. Once again, I was on my ass.
“I’m growing tired, Alex.”
“Not my fault, Sir.”
“You are playing with him. You know how much I hate that.”
“If you are sure, Sir.” Alex the Grand nodded at his leader and then sent a streak of electric current searing down the air between us. It hit me full force in the chest. Before I could get back to my feet I was hit with another one, except this one put me a couple of feet back. Not sure what angered me the most. Being attacked and letting it happen, or my rash reaction to defend myself from Alex the Grand’s suspend spell. Soon as I saw the complicated swirl of his wand I knew what I had to do. My wand was in the air and copyied his motion, sending my own streak of green haze his way. It nailed him, sending him into a ridged stance for a second before he landed on his back.
“Great job.” Clan Head Roberts snapped his finger and my spell was undone. Alex the Grand stood, wiping off his shirt as he snarled at me.
“Lucky shot.”
“Afraid not, Alex.”
“Was, Sir.”
“Then shall we try it again?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Ah . . . I knew you were trying to hide what you are. I knew if Alex kept on goading you with one spell after another that you would get fed-up and show your true power. It takes someone with major skills to counter a spell before it is even cast. Join the others.”
Damn. I’d done the one thing I did not want to. Crap. I was in major trouble.
Clan Head Roberts stood and walked a line in front of us again, stopping at each of us. There was no questions asked. No task placed in front of us. He simply stood there and stared at our heads. When he got to me, he winked and walked past me.
“You skipped him, Sir.” Tex replied.
“I know him all ready.”
“You have never seen me.”
“That is where you are wrong.” Clan Head Robert moved to stand in front of the last guy. “I’ve watched over you since the day you was born.”

The meal was consumed with conversation. Not mine. Nope. I kept my mouth shut and head down. I ate all the veggies, but left the nasty fried food. Not going to poison my body for someone else. One of the things I could control while I was going through this degrading selection.
“Is there something wrong with the chicken?”
Another attempt at Clan Head Roberts getting me to talking. Wasn’t going to happen. Nope.
“If it is not done . . . I can have them fix you some more.”
“Clan Head Roberts,” Tex spoke from the end of the table. “I do not think there is anything wrong with the chicken.”
“Your might be fine.” Clan Head Roberts sighed. “Quinn . . . Is there something wrong?”
Damn it. He made it a question. No way to avoid talking. Then again . . . nope. Alex the Grand was ready to jump.
“It is fine.”
“Then why are you not eating it?”
“I am full.”
“You only ate your veggies.”
“So.”
“Watch it.” Alex the Grand took a step towards me, only to be stopped by a lifted hand from Clan Head Roberts. “Sir?”
“I asked him. Let him answer as he sees fit.”
“He is disrespectful, Sir.”
“I am the one who decides that. Not you.”
“Yes, Sir. Sorry, Sir.”
“Quinn, would you like me to fix you something else?”
“No, Sir.”
“You do not have to address me so formally.”
Right. Alex the Grand was here to make sure none of us stepped a toe out of line. I was all ready pushing the limits. Not eating what was put in front of me. Refusing to speak to the Clan Head. Sharp tone when I did. Yeah, Alex the Grand wanted to stick a knife through my chest. Didn’t need him to tell me that. Nope. it was written in his eyes as plan as the desire was written in Clan Head Roberts’s chocolate covered eyes. Alex the Grand did not think I was fit to be chosen. I agreed. Wished Clan Head Roberts thought that way. Nope. His mindset was on the complete opposite end of mine and Alex the Grand. How did I change that? Make a complete fool out of myself? Disrespect Clan Head Roberts to the point that Alex the Grand was ordered to teach me a lesson. Then again . . . if I went too far then Clan head Roberts might give Alex the Grand the order to eliminate me. Not something I wanted. Nope. I simply wanted to go back a couple of hours and never read the summons. Never have heard Shamus contact his father. Never heard him take the head of the Irish Mob. I simply wanted my typical, boring, love filled life back.
“If you are done . . .” Crap when had Clan Head moved behind my chair? “The allow me to get your chair for you.”
“I can get it.”
I went to scoot my chair back, but Clan Head Roberts took control of tugging me from under the table and held his hand out to me. I shook my head and stood, walking around him.
“Time to get things started.” Clan Head Roberts waved towards the end of the dining room. “Join the others and I’ll get this selection ceremony going.”

I went to stand and found a hand in front of me.
“Allow me to help you.”
I took the slender hand and allowed the Clan Head tug me to my feet. He didn’t pull hard, but I all most fell into him. Would have if he had not stepped back.
“Sorry. Forget my own strength from time to time.”
Right. The glittering brown eyes told me the harder than necessary tug was on purpose.
“Why did you call in Shamus Senior?”
“I did not.” Why was he still holding my hand?
“Then why did he call me. That pesky human you live with?”
“Shamus is not pesky.”
“Okay. Over territorial of what does not belong to him.”
“I do.”
“you are a witch. You belong to no one.”
“Then you will allow me to return to my home and life.”
“No.” He gave my hand a firm jerk, forcing me to walk along side him as he moved down a white hallway. “You are a Witch. You were given a summons by me. You will be here until I make my decision.”
“Then I do not belong to myself.”
“You . . .” Clan Head paused then shook his head as he resumed the trek down the hallway. “Okay. I retreat a bit. You belong to no one, but answer to your Clan Leader and your Clan Head. Am I not one of those two?”
No way to rebuke that so I nodded.
“Then we are on the same page.”
“Surely, you do not wish to have someone here who has been involved with another for eleven years. One who does not participate in any activity his clan sponsors.”
“I made my five choses. You are among one of them. You have to be here until I make my final chose.” The man came to stop in front of an open door. “This is where you will wait. My servents will bring in lunch in a few minutes. I will join you five and after we will begin.”
“How does this work?”
“You will find out soon enough.” Clan Head waved at the doorway. “Go inside.”
With a deep sigh I walked into the room, fearing what Shamus might be doing? Knew he would be ticked off. When the man did not get his way . . . thing began to fly. He had better aim than I did when I pulled out my wand. It’s why I loved him so much. He knew what he wanted and went for it with everything he had. Worse he had sold his soul to his dad and gained nothing. I had still been taken from him. Least the Clan Head came for me and not Alex The Grand. Situation could have been worse than it was.

Taping my wand was getting me nowhere. Nothing came to mind. Nothing sprang to life. Nothing gave me the information I needed. Thirty spells and still . . . diddly squat. Dang-it.
“Something wrong, Quinn?”
Boy was there. Not anything Quinn could help me with. He was a mere human . . . shit. Cranky fit me. Never in my life had I stated such about anyone. It didn’t matter one bit if someone was human or supernatural. Everyone was . . . okay, equal did not fit. But in some ways we were all alike. Humans had issues arise everyday. Obviously, supernatural beings did too. I sure was in a pickle. Still, it wasn’t something Shamus could aid me in. Nope. It was only going to hurt mine and his relationship.
“Tell me, please.” Strong hands kneaded my shoulders.
A sigh, that I wasn’t sure if it came from my dilemma or his strong fingers digging into my tense muscles. One led me down a horrific path. The other . . .  Totally bliss.
“Come on. You will feel much better if you tell me. You know you want to. That you will.”
Both was right, still . . . How did you tell the man you loved that you’d been summoned to be one of five brought in front of the Clan’s Head. The one man that had the right to chose from any coven around the world. Not just the USA, but the world. There were over two hundred thousands members in the USA. How had I been chosen? How I even gotten on his radar? I’d not been involved in the coven, besides the yearly mandatory meetings, for over twelve years.
“It’s can’t be that bad.”
“Can.” I dropped my head forward, groaning. “I’m cattle.”
“What?” Shamus slid my wand from my hand and tugged my chair back, so he stood in front of me. “You are no cattle.”
“I am.”
“Explain.”
I quickly gave Shamus the run-down of what the summons I received three hours earlier meant. His face went so red that it looked like a deep intense fire raged behind his naturally brown eyes. If I hadn’t known he was human, I would have grouped him in with the Vampires.
“You can get out of it.”
“I wish.”
“You can.” Shamus crossed his arms. “You will.”
“Wish I could. Believe me.”
“You simply tell them that you are taken. I will not let you go.”
“I have to go. I’m sure I want be chosen. I mean . . .” Why would the Clan’s Head want someone who was not involved in the Clan life? Nope. That would work in my favor. It would. There were four others going. One of them would be chosen.
“You aren’t going. That’s my final word.”
Final word? “How do you plan on stopping his Second-In-Command from popping in here and taking me for ignoring a summons?”
“These people don’t know who they are messing with.”
Shamus pulled out his phone and hit two buttons. A one and the send. Damn it. Not good. He only called his dad when . . . crap. I should have not told him. I knew he would react bad, just not . . . calling in the Head of the Irish Mob never crossed my mind. Shamus and his father did not get along. Still . . . His dad gave him anything he wanted. His dad would fight to please his son. Shamus’ dad thought that if he gave his son the right item that his son would step up and take his place one day. Shamus always refused to take part in the underhanded tactics his father dealt in.
“Dad, I need your help.”
Silence plagued the room, even though Shamus words spilled, more like he snapped his demand into the phone. I thought his dad might be talking some sense into him when I heard Shamus plea for his help. I hoped it worked. Should have known better.
“Help me and I’ll . . . I’ll take my place.”
“No!”
“You heard me right.”
“No, Shamus. Don’t do that. It won’t do you any good.”
I could not let him do something that would place him in the one spot he despised. There was no way his dad could get me out of the spot I was in. He was a human. As much as I hated to clump people into groups that’s the way the world went. Humans and Supernatural. Even the humans were broken down into small fashions by their race and religion. Supernatural Beings were as well. Witch. Vampire. Shifter. Even the Shifters broke their self down into species. Each of them had a leader, or multiple leaders in the Witches case. Wasn’t so sure about how the others broke theirs down, but I knew what the Witches did. There were Clan Leaders, and the Coven Head. He was the top dogs among my kind. What he said was law. If you refused to do as told . . . he had a man that would make you wish you did. No one wanted to face Alex The Grand. He was known for his wand rack torture technique. Being suspended in the air while Alex The Grand used his wand to contort my body into shapes that a body was not supposed to be in. Not something I wanted to experience. Nope. I had no choice but to go. No matter what the Irish Mob did. There was no way I would risk my life. I loved Quinn. Didn’t want to go be cattle for anyone, but I . . .
“You will not be going.”
“You should not have done that.”
“Dad knows the Clan Head. He is calling him now.”
Damn it. Not good. “You should not have called him.” I rested my hand on his cheek. “There is no getting out of this. I simply have to do as told. You have given your father the one thing he wants and he will not be able to get me out of this situations.”
“He will. I would have been able to if . . . I should have taken my place a long time ago.”
“You did not want to lower yourself to his level of deceit. I admire you for that.”
“If it ke - -“
A cloud of white mist formed around us. I tried to push Shamus behind me, but he refused to budge.
“Quinn Adams . . .” The one person there was no denying took shape in our living room, taking up the entire room. Or so it felt. The man was huge. Strength radiated from him. Power oozed from him. Before he could say another word, I was kneeling. Shamus was pulling on my arm, but I refused to stand. Not from the power and strength, but from the intensity he used when he said my name.
“Clan Head - -“
The man lifted his hand and my lips closed.
“I believe you were given a summons, were you not?”
I nodded.
“Then why did I receive a call from my friend, Shamus senior requesting I resend my request?”
“You will not be taking mine.”
Mine? Crap. Shamus truly needed to learn when to step back and when to fight. Then wasn’t a time to fight. Nope. Not hardly.
“I have not made my decision, but he will be going with me. Now, since you see fit in meddling in my personal life.”
Before I could make my own plea I found myself kneeling on a cool red and black star shaped tile.
“Stand.”
“Where . . .”
“You are in my home. Stand and let me show you to the room you will wait in.”

Crazy day didn’t fit. Life upside down didn’t fit. Nothing could described the early spring day. It started out like any other day. I got up. Got dressed. Ate my granola bar. Fed the dog and left for work. Sat down behind my desk to work on the story I was editing. Like with most authors the story was written well and there were little mistakes to be marked. Loved those kind of authors, because it made my job easy and enjoyable. Allowed me to get lost in the content and the life of the characters. Not the best aspect for an editor, but hey, when a writer knew how to draw someone into a new world there was no other option but to go along for the ride. I had gotten so far into the character’s life that I lost track of time and didn’t even realize anything major was going on around me until someone yelled my name.
“Jay! Jay! Get your ass up.”
I glanced around to find pandomium around me. My coworkers was grabbing everything they could from their desk and rushing towards the emergency exit. When Kyle ran past me and snagged my arm, tugging me down the small one person aisle I caught the hint of smoke.
“What’s on fire?”
“Does it matter?”
Kyle kicked open the emergency exit and we were welcomed with a hoard of people screaming and slamming into one another as they scuttled back up the stairs. Kyle spun me around and shoved me back into our office area.
“There’s another stairway on the other side.”
Ripples of dark gray clouds flowed through the emergency exit doorway as the people who had tried to escape returned. Screams. Shouts for clarification of where they should go next. Consumed the office. People coughed and gaged, but Kyle kept shoving me down the aisle. I forced myself to come up to his side, taking a second to glance up at him. His face was red and his cheeks were wet with water. He wasn’t crying, or he might have been. It didn’t matter either way to me. What did was getting him to safety.
“Damn it.” Kyle glanced around the room. “There is no other way out of here.”
There was, but it mean exposing myself, which equaled harsh punishment.
“Do you know of any other way to get out of here?” Kyle pressed his face against the window, sighing. “Why are there no . . .”
We were twenty floors up and both stairways was consumed with smoke. There was only one way for us to get out of this alive. Me. Damn it. What was going to happen to me? What would Kyle think? How would I explain myself?
“Jay,” Kyle tugged me into his arms, pressing me closer than he had ever done before. He’d never done so in front of anyone. Not even our best friends. No one knew we had been dating for over two years. No one knew we longed to have an open relationship. We would have if Kyle’s family would not disown him. Not even I wanted to piss off Kyle’s family. They were well known for termination the ones who messed with them. Even if it was family. Kyle being the next in line to run the Lawson Empire would not have mattered. All his family would have seen was a disgraceful act of betrayal. Kyle’s life had been planned out for him since he was born. His marriage had been carefully picked from other large empires among the US. Kyle and me knew that our time together would be short lived since he had to marry some woman when he turned twenty-five.
“Least I won’t have to marry Leslie.” Kyle rubbed his chin across my head.
Wish that was true. I would not let Kyle die. I loved him. I could save him. “I can get us out of here.” I whispered against his chest.
“There is no way out, love.”
“There is.”
“Where? Will it allow us all to get out of here?”
I wish I could, but my talent was still growing and my magic was thin. My spell would be strong enough to transport the two of us, but . . . as much as I wished I could rescue all the people we worked with. I couldn’t, but I could and would save Kyle.
“You trust me?”
“You know I do.”
“Then hang onto me tight and close your eyes.” I wrapped my arm around him, crossing my arms and leaving my palms up. “Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, I pull on your wonderful skills to aid me in returning home.”
“What . . “
Kyle’s words fade away as the air around us swirled until it wrapped us into a blanket of safety. The area around us grayed out and then lightened until we stood in my living room.
“You okay?” I ran my hands up Kyle’s back, leaning back enough I could stare up at him.
His face was white as a sheet, but the tip of his ears was red, telling me all I need to know. He was pissed at me. I would not only be in trouble for using my magic in front of him, but he was not pleased with how I saved us.
“What did you do?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“I got us to safety.”
“How?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.” Kyle took two huge steps back from me. “Why did you not help the others? So many people were in there. We knew them all.”
“I could not.”
“You got us out of there.”
“My . . . I couldn’t. I’m sorry. I wanted to, but you - -“
“I am not more important than anyone else.”
“You are to me.” I reached out behind me, balancing myself against the back of my sofa. “You are to your family.”
“How did you get us out of there?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Why not?”
“You would not believed me.”
“I would.”
“I still can’t tell you. Not without permission.”
“From who?”
“People over me.”
“You let no one rule you.” Kyle sighed and walked over to the recliner that sat halfway across the room. “You never have. Fuss at me for letting my family run my life.”
Couldn’t argue with that. I sure gave Kyle hell about how his family controlled him. Told him what to do. When to move. What would happen. Still, I could not explain to him. If he would accepted me completely I could have gained permission to do so, but . . . I knew from the get-go that Kyle would never be mine.
“I’m waiting.”
“I’m sorry, Kyle, but I can’t explain. You have to follow your family law and I have to follow the ones over me.” I knew it would not be acceptable to Kyle, but there was nothing I could do about it.
“That is not acceptable to me.” Kyle stood and kicked his legs out, crossing them.
“Don’t’ go all boss on me.”
I hated when Kyle fell into his future roll of you do as I say or hell will reign down on you. I was not one of his father’s cronies and he knew how I felt about him treating me in such a disrespectful manner. I had saved his life because I love him and I knew he loved me, even if he could not chose to spend his entire life with me.
Before he could respond to me the room filled with ten navy blue robed people. I fell to my knees and bowed my head. I knew I had to face the music, but I had not expected them to enter in such a flamboyant manner. It wasn’t their normal style. Kyle’s reaction was typical though. He had jumped up and vaulted over the sofa, blocking anyone from me.
“Elders, it is - -“
“Hush.”
Elder Robert floated in front of Kyle and touched his head. Kyle crumpled forward, but instead of landing in the floor, he floated over to the sofa and was lowered onto it.
“Thank you, Elder Robert.”
“You know you crime?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“You know your punishment.”
I did. I knew it when I did it. I had forfeited my time among the human world. I would be forced to return to the coven and live under the thumb of others. I would be nothing to the ones who had lived there for their entire life. No one would take notice of me. Far as they would be concerned I was simply a disgrace among the coven. Those who chose to live among the human world and was sent back to the coven as punishment was nothing. No one. Just a strain on a coven.
“Was it worth it?”
“I would do it again, and again.”
“Why?”
“I love him.”
“Why not make him yours?”
“He has other obligations.”
“He will not choose you then.”
Words stung, but were pure truth. I could not speak it. Every time I thought it, someone stabbed a knife through my heart. Saying the words would only break me more than knowing I would neve be able to marry Kyle.
“He will not remember you.” Elder Robert snapped his finger and Kyle faded away. I knew he was not harmed. He had simply been sent home. He would not remember me, the fire, or anything related to our love. His life would simply be void of a few memories. I on the other hand would always know what I had lost. “It is time to go.”

Lamia’s . . . half serpent, half woman. A sea monster. What was the third strike against her? Oh, right. A she-demon who was expected to settle down and procreate, who desired the flesh of a woman, instead of a man. In her family’s eyes she was  a total failure, hence the reason they had dragged her in front of Lucifer to ensure their daughter did her family duty. Not like it would matter either way, she was the baby of the family. Her brother had the responsibility to carry on the family name. Her eldest sister had the responsibility to ensure her husband’s family name was carried on. She was the last child born. She had no responsibility, in her eyes. Her mom said her place among the family was no different than any other  sibling. She was to marry a respectful demon and give him a child, or three. Her mom and dad did not care that the idea of a man repulsed her.
“Hey, Diane.”
A sexy, squeaky voice had her spinning around. “What are you doing here?”
“Thought you had me summoned to support you.”
“No.” Shit. This was not good. No one was supposed to know about Teke.
“Diane,” her mother came to her side and glanced back at Teke. “It looks like your friend came to remind you to do your duty.”
What? Why would her mom . . . She tilted her head from side-to-side, taking in her mom’s dead-on stare at Teke.
“I knew that she would support us.”
Support them? There was no way Teke would do such. Teke and her had been more than best friends for the last six years. Everyone thought they shared an apartment, but they shared a room. A life. They were a family. One no one knew about thanks to her father.
“You had me summoned?”
“No, Teke. I did.” Lucifer had all three of them kneeling. “Stand. Come in. Let’s get this over with.”
Diane let her mom enter first, then stood back and waited for Teke to enter. Wasn’t the wisest move on her part, but she would not step on her woman’s toes and Teke was the dominate among their relationship.
“I like to see that.” Lucifer pointed at her and then the love seat. “Teke, join Diane. Mrs. Smarts take a seat in front of my desk.”
“Yes, My Lord.” Her mom bowed and took her seat. “I think you for - -“
“I did not meet with you for the reason you believe I did.” Lucifer came to stand in front of them. He gave them a dead-on stare that had Diane’s entire body shivering. “It has been a long time since we had a couple of your two caliber.”
What? She glanced over at Teke, finding the same shock on her face as she felt running through her. That might have been what kept her attention focused on Lucifer, but her mom gasped and sprang to her feet. Diane did not get to hear what all her mother was going to spout at her thanks to Lucifer and a snap of his finger.
“Sit. Remain there.”
“You two thought no one knew.”
Teke gave a small bow.
“Families can make situation intense.”
That they could.
“When Mrs. Smarts brought her complaint against me, I knew it was time I stepped in. there is now way that I would separate a set of true mates just to appease a mother and father’s desire. Not when there are other sibling to carrying on their family name.”
“Really?” Diane winced when Teke elbowed her. “Sorry, Sir. Sorry, Teke.”
“I have to admit, you two did keep it hidden until the last year. Even then, your family and friends did not catch onto the state of things between you. I believe it was time for the entire world to know what lay among them. Your type of mates are rare and a great value to our world.”
“How so, Sir?” Teke took hold of her hand, and pride rushed through Diane as no need to jerk her hand away from her lover came to life. She’d wanted for so long to let the entire world know about her feelings for Teke.
“Long story and one that only you two need to hear about.” Lucifer faced her mother. “As you can see, I will not be ordering your daughter to marry anyone, other than her true mate. No leave us be.”
Diane couldn’t believe the red faced woman who rushed from the room, muttering about it being unfair. That she would tolerate her daughter debasing their family in such a manner. Thankfully, it was not up to her. Lucifer had the last say and he stated his stance on the situation in front of him pretty clearly.

It was finally time. I couldn’t believe it. Tonight Michael would learn my biggest secret. The only one I kept from him. I had never outright and lied to him, but avoidance can be viewed as lying. He just hoped Michael understood why he done so. Wasn’t like I wanted to, but I had to have permission from my Coven leader to mate him before I could inform him of my Witch ability. Not like I wanted to be a witch. My coven pretty much disowned me, which was another reason I had to wait a year and half to gain permission from Coven Leader Adams. He swore if I could not participate in the most basic meeting then I had no reason to rush into a mating. Ass jerk.
“Uh ho.” Michael shut the door behind him and leaned against it, letting his long body draw my full attention. “I know that look. What happened?”
Crap. Not how he’d wanted to start the night off. “Just thinking very hard.” Too hard if he picked up on my mood. “Come one, I’ve got a nice meal laid out and a night of fun planned.” I hoped fun was how they ended the night. It would devastate me if Michael rejected me. Shit. I should have participated in my cover a pit more than I had. If my own lack of ability to be part of a group of witches meant I couldn’t have my mate then I’d . . . there was no telling what I might do.
“Come on, sweetheart.” Michael slipped his arm around me and kissed my cheek. “Keep those deep thoughts at bay, or I will tickle you until they run screaming.”
“No. please don’t.” I gave my usual response to Michael’s attempt to brighten my mood. Man didn’t realize that one look at him and my entire world lit up light a Christmas Tree.
“Seriously, do we eat, or talk first.”
“Talk.” If I ate first I might just lose my nerve and I would not do that. “Let’s sit down at the table then I’ll explain what’s on my mind.”

Fingers slipped behind his head, squeezing as they pulled him closer to the man he’d always dreamed of kissing. His biggest dream was about to come true. His heart raced. His hands sweated. His stomach churned, but not in a dread filled manner. Nope. Pure energy rushed through his entire body as Kyle tugged him in for a kiss.
“You want this, Larry?”
“Yes.”
Warmth pressed against his lips as a wet tongue prodded until his lips parted. Soon as his tongue made contact with Kyle’s a soft whimper escaped him and was swallowed up by Kyle. The man of his dreams. The man who wasn’t a man. The man who was tied to a set of crutches as he hid his true side. A Faun.
Hands slid down his side and slipped around to his back, tugging him flush against Kyle’s body.
“You sure about this?”
“More than.”
“You know what I am.”
“So.”
“I’m not human.”
“You are to me. That’s what matters.”
“If you are sure.”
Instead of speaking the truth again, Larry pressed his lips against Kyle, shushing him.

A snap of the fingers. Couldn’t be that simple. No encation. No walking a circle. No wand. “You full of it, Russel.”
“Simple, isn’t it.”
“Unbelievable.”
“Sounds like it, but watch.”
Russel lifted his hand and snapped his finger before his gold chain, that he only wore when he was going to one of his father’s high priced charity get-to-gathers, appeared in his hand.
“Simple.”
“You try it.”
“Try what?”
“Think of something you own that you want to hold, then snap your fingers.
He ran his hand across his brow, soaking up a streak of sweat. There was no way he could do this. He wasn’t anyone special. His parents hadn’t even cared enough to raise him, why pass along some witchy skills. Nope. He was no one. Another person who lived day to day. Another person who made his living from paycheck to paycheck. No one special.
“You are more than you know.” Russel patted his shoulder as he passed by him. “What do you have to lose by trying it.”
Nothing. Everything. His mind. Why would anyone think such a skill existed. Then again . . . Russel sure had pulled the undoable off. Crap. Everything in side him screamed for him to try it.
“You know you want to.”
“Shut up, Russel.”
He opened his mind to the IPad that rested on his nightstand. He made sure to include the dent on the lower side when he pictured it. With tight held fingers he completed the snap and found himself . . .
“Holy Shit!”
“Neat. Right?”
Boy was it. Now what was he supposed to do about his new found talent.

Hon, you with me?”
I nodded, but knew he wasn’t following his lover of fifteen years. Fifteen years and he’d never knew. Never expected. He knew Fire Demons existed. All kinds did. One of the Water Demon accidently drowned some of the Secret Service when they tried to commander his home to hide the Vise President after his convey came under attack.
“Hon, you don’t,” Rex took his hand, “look so good.”
What did Rex expect? His lover, best friend, man he told everything to, but was not worthy of the same.
“I could care less what you are.” I jerked my hand free, slamming his palm into Rex’s chest, sending his kneeling lover to his ass. “You lied to me.”
“That’s . . . your . . .” Rex stood and shoved his hands into his pocket. “it doesn’t bother you that - -“
“I couldn’t care less if you shit and spit fire, but I told you every little despairing accident that affected my life before and after I met you.”
“I’m sorry, Cage.”
“Why?”
“No one in my family have every told anyone about our horrible side.”
Horrible side? What in the world? Did his lover truly believed that demons were bad? None Cage knew were. His sister-in-law was a Tree Demon and her sister was a Fire Seeker Demon. From what he learned about her taught him that she was born mix breed, which apparently was the worst kind of demon known. Why did Rex think his fire side was horrible. Surly he had miss understood what Rext meant.
“Hon, what’s going on inside your sexy, gorgeous mind?”
“Do you really believe your fire side horrible?”
A nod and lowered head was his answer.
“Why?”
“When I was five I lost control, creating a blaze that consumed the bedroom. The smoke . . . it was suffocating. Deadly. Literally.”
I easily came to my feet, hugging Rex into my chest. He might have been pissed about the lie, but like most time, something knew came to life. His lover’s fear of fire made sense. That was worth more than any anger.

Lushes green grass rested in front him. No footprints. No streaks showing Jacob went through the Unicorn Field. Thank the Gods. People where said to lose toes, even feet, for just stepping one inch into the field. Every unicorn should have been destroyed, but Zeus loved those wild creatures and created the field just so they had a safe place to live.
He scanned the area, hoping to spot . . . “Ah., there you are.”
Zack always told Jacob his fancy, gold shining watch would get him into trouble. It always caught the sunlight, flickering a yellowish streak.
Zack lowered himself as low as any Centaur could. Not much because he had to be able to move on Jacob. He wasn’t sure why Jacob had thought hiding under a thicket of bushes would work. Might have if any other Centaur had been sent, but Zack was the second among his kind, which meant he kicked every other Centaur’s butt. Wasn’t easy, and afterwards he promised himself he would nevre lose his spot because he failed an assignment. That meant . . . Jacob would not get by with avoiding the path ridiculous path he chose, even if Zack understood how Jacob felt. Being promised to the top dog Centaur sucked. The half man, half horse was a bastard. Already had two other men, but Zack had a job to do. That’s what mattered to him.
“You might as well come out Jacob.”
Rustling reached his ears, forcing him to jump the bushes, landing in front of Jacob. Jacob jerked backwards, but made no move for freedom.
“Don’t make me hurt you.”
“I want be a - -“
“not my business. Come with me and face your fate. Running only makes things worse.” Understatement. His leader wasn’t no for tolerance. Stupidity, or what he viewed as such, pissed him off more than being hit. Most who upset him disappeared.
“Fine.” Jacob shook his head. “Might as well get this over with.”

Was her . . . they were. She was having a stroke? On drugs. No. Laura had been with her for the last twelve hours. Never left her side. Not even to piss. Why was her eyes so round? Black. Shinning. Sparkling.
Had she . . . She had.
“Lord of what? A realm? What’s that?”
She waved a cross pattern as a . . . was that a . . . Wand? It was. A god to honest Harry Potter style wand.
“Take these intruders . . .”
“Intruders?” Where? There was no . . . Holy shit. Where had those people came from” Was that a dog? No way. Bigger than a Great Dane. What was that?
“. . . back to the Unseen Realm at once.”
Laura’s hand dropped to her side as a streak of white lighting zoomed towards the three short, stocky men and there . . . whatever it was.
Cora wasn’t believing it, but she saw it. The people vanished and Laura was jerking her arm as she sped walk towards her driveway.
“You have to go.”
“What just happened?”
“you have to go.” Laura snatched her purse and unsnapped the top, plucking her keys from it. “Get in.” The car beeped.
“No.” Cora jerked her arm free. “What just happened?”
“No time to explain.”
“Not leaving.” Cora crossed her arms and leaned against the warm, smooth car door.
“Don’t stub up. Listen it’s not safe. I promise I’ll explain later. When it is safe.”
“Safe?”
“yes. The next Fae that comes through the portal may be stronger than my witch ass.”
“Witch?”
“yes. Now leave.” A loud explosion and red flames zipped high into the air from behind Laura’s house. “Leave. Please.”
Cora wanted answers, but she knew if Laura promised to explain then she would. That alone motivated her to take the keys and climb into her Lexus.
