Chapter 14
Before I could get the rest of my explanation out people where rushing around her and Mr. Chamberland was holding a hystical Sandy in his arms. He had a scowl on his face and growled at Rex to explain what he did to poor Sandy. That no woman should be this upset. Not that Mr. Chamberland ever cared about women’s feeling in the past. Rex had saw how he treated the women he brought home to bed.
Rex stood up taller and spoke in a normal tone, not caring that everyone had gone silence. “I was trying to explain to her that I was invoking the Previous Mate Rule.”
Mr. Chamberland’s eye’s went wide and a snarl filled the air squashing the murmurs of disbeliefs coming from the other pack members.
“You have not found no mate.” Mr. Chamberland finally said.
“I found my mate the first day I arrived. I did not know about my mate until I read the books you provided me.” Rex made sure to keep the pronouns out of his speech. He would not specfy what sex his mate was.
“Then who is she? Why is she not at your side?”
“I decided that I would be better off without my mate, so I decided to Revoke our Mateship.” Rex wasn’t quite sure if he used the right wordage there, but he was sure Mr. Chamberland knew what he meant. His mouth sure dropped open for a second, but then he got this huge smile on his face.
“You are lying and you will take Sandy on her date. That is an order.”
Rex expected this and prepared for it. “I have proof.”
“You do not.”
“Ask your Second in Command.”
Mr. Chamberland glanced at Larry, who seemed rattled for a minute then recovered quickly. “I witness him reject his mate. I’m sorry I did not say anything, never thought he would use such a rule.”
Larry had done just like Rex expected him to do. Man was great at saving his own ass and aiding others. He was always sending people to me to help them. He was also a great guy. Since I got to know him, I wished he had been willing to be my mate. He would have been a nice partner. Just wasn’t in the cards. Maybe someone else would be given to me.
“Fine. Fine.” Mr. Chamberland’s promise of retribution clung in those two words, but he softened his tone when he dealt with Sandy. “I’m sorry this has happened to you, Sandy. If I had know I would have never . . .”
“It’s fine, Alpha.” She wiped her eyes and smiled up at him. “I have other options in the pack.”
“That’s great, honey.” Mr. Chamberland said and patted her on the back. “Then go enjoy the rest of the night.” He watched her walk away and then faced me. “As for you, you just bought yourself three days in the cage.”
Another thing Rex expected. Actually, he’d expected time in the dungeon. Guess Mr. Chamberland figured he’d have to go easier on him since he had that meeting coming up with his biological father.
“Larry take him to the cage.”
“Wolf or human, Sir?”
“Human.”
Shit. That was going to be uncomfortable. Oh well. He’d handle it.

Chapter 13
Rex stood outside the gym building behind Mr. Chamberland’s house, waiting to be called in front of the entire pack. Down front sat all the single females, just like the book he’d read said there would be. Up on the podium was Mr. Chamberland and to his right stood Larry, the one that had supposed to be his. The one that he’d willing let go so he could be happy, but he had looked anything but happy since then. Even when they passed his eyes had held sadness and he had made little touches with me. Touches that still sent shivers over my arms, but the mate smell was gone. The breakage wordage, spell whatever you called it, had worked. They were no longer each others, which was good. It provided him his out for the day’s event. Yet another thing Mr. Chamberland was going to be ticked off about. There’d been lots of those over the last few days.
Rex had came to the aid of several wolves that came to him over. A couple of them had been men that just needed advice on how to escape Mr. Chamberland’s authority control. He’d simply showed them the passages in the old text that told them they had the right to switch packs by reaching out to the Pack Master if Mr. Chamberland refused to allow them to if they had valid reason. All did. Most had better job offers. There had been one or two that came to him wanting to know what to do about their mates being of the same sex. Once again, he referred them to the text book he’d read and told them it was fine for them to go over Mr. Chamberland’s head. At first, Rex had not know how for them to do that, but with a little bit of inquiry with Larry, he was able to figure out that Mr. Chamberland kept the man’s phone number in his office. Simple enough for Rex to sneak in at night and get the number. Even easier for him to pass it along to those that needed to reach out to the man. It’d taken all his strength not to reach out to him about his own situation, but him and his wolf knew he was needed there.
“Today is my nephew’s Choosing Ceremony, so if Rex Chamberland will come forward.”
Time had came. He slowly walked from behind the building and up onto the podium, making sure to stay at the edge of the stage where Mr. Chamberland had instructed him to stay.
“One by one each of you single woman will walk by him. If he catches your scent he will reach for you. If not, then you all will fight for the chance to be his first date.”
Rex sat there, staring at a knot on a board next to his blue shoe. It took only three minutes for the fifteen females to walk by.
“Then it is up to the ladies to decide who he will date first. You each drew numbers before you came here. The lowest two numbers will start and go from there. Let’s get this going. Wolf form only.”
Rex continued to stare at the boards, not caring one way or the other. He wasn’t even sure how many had fought. When there was a faint snarl to pay attention from Mr. Chamberland.
When had he came up to his side? Didn’t matter. Rex wasn’t about to watched female wolves fight over him. It turned his stomach. Why would anyone want to fight for the right to date another. Why not just ask them. Why risk harm to one selves? I could see if both parties agreed to such an event, but it should be there choice. Not like this. I can even see it taking place if both sex were allowed to participate and if only the singles who wanted to participate did so.
“The winner is . . .” Rex glanced up taking in the tall, lanky, big boobed, blonde woman, who stood naked smiling at him. “Sandy Adkock. The date will take place tonight at seven.” Nice of Mr. Chamberland to set up the date for him, but . . . The man should have asked him first. “Everyone enjoy the food and mingle.” Mr. Chamberland waited until everyone was out of their seats and then came by him, jerking him by his collar. “Time to meet the future Rex Chamberland.” Yeah right.
Rex followed behind him and into the crowd. They came to a stop in front of Sandy, who still bore the huge smile. Mr. Chamberland gripped the young woman on the shoulder. “Sandy, I’d like to introduce you to Rex. You two enjoy the rest of the party and your date tonight.”
Mr. Chamberland walked away, leaving the crowd to surround us. Rex hadn’t wanted a crowd around them when he let the lady down, but if he had to do so there, he would.
“What do you have planned for us to do tonight?” Sandy’s soft and gentle tone made the sickness in my stomach worse, but Rex was not going to be forced into dating anyone. Not for any tradition. Specially one that was being twisted to fit a single man’s way of thinking, and a train of thought that was from the stone age.
“Sandy, you seem like a nice lady,” Rex made sure to keep his tone soft and low. “but I will not be taking you out tonight or any night.” A screamed ripped through the crowd that had everyone turning their heads.

Chapter 12 part 2
“Yes, but she left a birth certificate that was filed with the state of California. She had her lawyer pay for a fake one to be created for her husband and the world to see, while he filed the real one. We have already done the Truth Test on the human lawyer.”
Rex could not believe what he had heard. What did that mean for him? His entire life had been a lie. His mom was a master liar. Mr. Chamberland already hated him, what would he do with him now that he knew he was a half-breed. He would not allow gays in his pack. What would he do with me if it became known?
“What is this bastard asking for?” Mr. Chamberland’s tone had gone clip and snippy.
“Watched your tone, Alpha.”
“Sorry, Pack Master, it’s just you know my stance on half-breeds. You also know that my father wrote it in our law book that my sister’s child was a member of this pack, even if my sister could never be.”
“You have no choice, but to live up to your law book.” The Pack Master said. “As for the Warlock, I suggest you give him what he is asking for.”
“And that is?”
“Visitation with his son.”
This was not going to go good for Rex. Rex already had to toe the line in order to keep his wolf out of trouble with Mr. Chamberland. Looked as if being born a half-breed, whatever that meant, was going to be a strike against him. If his birth father, and Rex was not sure how he felt about meeting the man who created him, pushed for the right to see him then . . .  Damn, he was in for more than time in the cage.
“Fine.” Mr. Chamberland sighed so hard I could hear it clearly. “He can come in three weeks. I have the Choosing Ceremony planned in a week’s time and you know it is a week long.”
“Then he can come in two weeks.” The Pack Master must have stood because a chair scrape the floor. “Next week will be the ceremony, the week after will be the date week. After that week he can meet his son. Like I said, you will want to keep this Warlock happy. He is a powerful Warlock among the Supernatural World.”
“Two weeks then.” Mr. Chamberland’s tone was lower so he must be walking the Pack Master out of the office.
Rex waited quietly until light had his wolf squinting up at Mr. Chamberland’s narrowed eyes and red face.
“Your mother was more of a slut than I even reliazed. She really fucked this pack over and left me with a mess to deal with. You will do as I say when you meet this Warlock. You understand me.”
Rex did not respond with any nod or shake of the head.
“If you do not, then you will spend a week in the dungeon chained to the wall with my whip each night. Does that paint the picture clear for you.”
It did. Did not mean I would do as he said.
“The doctor will be here to remove what is left of the bullet in an hour. Then you will shift and go to your room, clean up and stay. Your food will be brought to you until after the Choosing Ceremony.”
He walked away, leaving me to plan my rebellious act toward the Choosing Ceremony. Larry had left me the book on what that was for, and made sure he wrote out that Mr. Chamberland did not allow any male to chose a male as a first date. It was to be a female werewolf. I would not do that unless I found one attracted.

Chapter 12 part 1
Pain laced through my body worse each day. My wolf clinched his fangs together, refusing to howl. He remained sitting, even when Mr. Chamberland came in taunting him about how his mother had caused his own downfall and put him in the spot he would remain in for the rest of his life. As much truth as lurked in those words, me and my wolf knew there was more to the story. Larry came in each day to bring us food and water. Degrading to eat from a bowl like a dog, but I had to keep my strength up. Only God knew what lay ahead of me when the week was up. What I did know was that hell rested ahead of me. Mr. Chamberland lived to make my life miserable. Not only his actions showed it, but he promised to do so until he broke my wolf and my wolf would not break. I knew that.
What had shocked me and my wolf the most was that the cage sat in the far back corner of Mr. Chamberland’s office. It remained covered with a black sheet unless Mr. Chamberland decided he wanted him to see him punish another member of the pack that had decided to step out of line. I wasn’t sure why he thought that was wise. All it did was drive my wolf’s need to take the weak, pathetic, bastard of a false leader down. Just having the ability to hear what Mr. Chamberland planned on doing in the future gave me a heads up on him. And a way to manupiliate things to go my way. What got me the most was the unexpected visitors that he had on my lats day in the cage. It taught me a lot more than the books had.
The books had told me there was a hierarchy among the Supernatural World, but it had not explained the basics of it. The overheard conversation did.
There was the packs that were led by their Alphas. The alphas were overseen by the Pack Master, who was overseen by the Supernatural Council that existed of one member race called a Councilman. The Supernatural Council is ruled by the Head of the Supernatural, aka Head Supernatural. The Pack Master is who had came to see Mr. Chamberland to see if he had become the guardian of Rex Chamberland. Mr. Chamberland answered him honestly, but when the Pack Master asked about his well being and to see him, Mr. Chamberland said he was fine, but having a hard time adjusting to the news of being a werewolf and he was limiting his contact with the numbers of powerful werewolves. The Pack Master had remained silent for some time, but in the end accepted what Mr. Chamberland said, but before he left, he gave him a stern warning that he did not want to mishandle the situation with his new ward. Mr. Chamberland asked what was going on. What he was told not only shocked him, but sent him and his wolf to his ass.
Pack Master said, “Did you know that the boy’s father was not the human your sister married?”
Mr. Chamberland growled. “Yes he was. It was why my father disowned her.”
“No, he was not. Your sister’s true mate was a Warlock.”
“A what!” Mr. Chamberland’s shout rattled my cage. “You telling me that my nephew is a half-breed?”
“It appears that way.”
“By whose word?”
“The Warlock’s and you sisters.”
“My sister is dead.”

Chapter 11
Cafeteria reminded me of high school. There was a huge line for a buffet style counter. Rex must have been the last to show up, because he was all the way in the back, but it did not keep him from hearing the conversations taking place. Wished it had. Would have saved him some trouble.
“It’s her son. My dad says so.”
“Yeah, mine told me that Rene’s wolf killed her human husband after she sent here son here. How much more of a disgrace could she be to our Pack.”
Rex bit his tongue when the younger boys spoke about what their fathers had said. They were just repeating what they’d heard from their parent. No reason to take my anger out on them. The first set of adult conversation he picked up on wasn’t so bad. Kind of shocked him and put more determination to refrain from falling under the control of Mr. Chamberland. Wished it was the second one that hadn’t pushed me over the edge.
“Was it not disgraceful enough that she left us to the hands of her brother’s hatred when she embarrassed her father by sleeping with that human when she was betrothed to that wonderful werewolf. Sending her son back here has done nothing but put a huge strain on him. Did she not care about her child?” The man had said to his wife.
“I’m not sure he will. He’s much stronger than Alpha Chamberland.”
“Doesn’t matter. Law books says he’s ranked at the bottom. He can’t even eat a full meal. It won’t take long before Alpha Chamberland has him in his dungeon and under his control. Then what do you think he will do with all that power.”
“I’m sure he will use it to aid us, just like his mother would have done for us. I knew Rene. She was a wonderful woman. She would have taught her son to take care of those weaker than him. His wolf might not be able to lead us, but he will not turn his strength on us, either.”
The woman was right. Rex would do what he could to aid the people here. He wasn’t sure how, but he hoped to find a path that led him into helping these wolves avoid Mr. Chamberland’s authorative control.
“Look at him standing back there. He’s nasty as hell. What gives him the right to come in here and take our food. His mother disgraced herself, twice. No wonder her father kicked her out of the pack. If I had been Alpha Chamberland, I would have forgone his father’s written word to teach the bastard about his heritage.”
“Least Alpha Chamberland is going to get him inside the dungeon before long. How long do you think it will take? One day? Two?”
Dugeon? What the fuck? Rex would not go into any such place. His would take the half wolf leader out before hand.
“What are you looking at you smug bastard? Your mom not teach you what your place was?” The man sneered at him. “That’s right. She was a hoe that spread her legs for humans.”
Rex lunged, shifting in mid-air, landing on top of the werewolf, gripping his neck with his fangs. The room grew silent, besides some chairs scraping the floor. Rex did not make a move to rip the man’s throat out. He simply held him still. The man did not make a move. He knew who was the more dominate wolf and when to submit.
A warm scent of pepperiment and salt filled my nose as hand came to rest on the back of my neck.
“Rex, you need to release Allen before the Alpha gets here.”
Larry. We might have released him from being our mate, but our wolf still viewed him as ours. His words were kind and caring, but worry clung to them, but Rex would not let the weasel of a wolf up without an apology from him.
“Please, Rex.”
“What is going on here?”
Mr. Chamberland’s voice boomed through the room, causing the guy between Rex’s teeth to grin up at him. He might think he had the upper hand since his Alpha was there, but there were still tight fangs around his neck. It only took a small tug to rip his throat out.
“Larry, get that bastard off of Allen’s throat.”
“Alpha, if I pull him off, Allen will not have a throat left.”
“Release him, this minute.” Mr. Chamberland gripped the back of Rex’s neck, squeezing.
Rex tightened his hold on Allen’s neck, causing him to whimper.
Mr. Chamberland snarled in his ear, forcing his power to flow of Rex, but Rex did not submit to him. It was then that Mr. Chamberland softly said, “Release him or I’ll force you inside a cage for the next week without food or water.”
Rex didn’t doubt the man would, but he also didn’t doubt that Mr. Chamberland heard the soft whispers of people speaking about how much more power the child of Rene had than their Alpha. It was good that they saw that, but not either. It would make any punishment he got worse. Mr. Chamberland would want his members to see that he had full control of the lowest rank pack member. It was either rip the man’s throat out to show he would not listen to the man who thought he held power over him, or back down and let others think he was going to toe-the -line. Not an option for him and his wolf.
“Last warning.” Mr. Chamberland snarled.
Rex jerked his head sidewards, slamming into Mr. Chamberland’s face and tossing Allen’s throat across the room. Gasp filled the room as he darted out of the cafeteria and down the hallway to the front door. He jumped out the window and raced down the driveway, only to hear gunshots. One bullet hit beside him, then another, but the third hit in in the side, stinging and knocking him to the ground. It burned and hissed through his entire body, leaving him motionless.
“Did you think I did not have a way to handle wayward wolves.” Mr. Chamberland snarled. “Larry, take him to the cage. Leave the bullet in for the week. Let him see how it feels to have silver course through his system.”
Larry’s arms slipped under him and walked back up to the house. Once inside he made his way into Mr. Chamberland’s office and through a hidden passageway. He laid him inside a wolf size cage and then ran his hand over him.
“Why did you not listen to me?” Larry rubbed his head against his flank. “You are going to be in major pain while that silver words it’s way through your body. Just breath through it and the week will be over it before you know it.” Larry kissed his nose and then stepped back. “I’m sorry for the everything today.”

Chapter 10
Rex rubbed his eyes  and laid the last book in the stack down. He wasn’t sure what time it was, or how long he’d been holed up in the assigned room. Wrong. According to the book he’d finished reading, the wolves with the highest rank received the rooms with the most comfort due to their ability to protect and guard the pack. The pack alpha being the one who owns the Pack House and has an entire floor for himself and his family. That should have been his area. He was ten time stronger than his Mr. Chamberland, but because . . . . the pack law book stated that the illegitimate child of Rene Dawn Chamber land, whose name had been marked out of the Pack Register, no longer held the right to hold any position among the pack and was to be considered the lowest ranked pack member, no matter his power status. That law had his wolf howling inside his head, but when he read that the legal age limit among the werewolves was twenty-one, because their bodies did not completely mature until then, he’d all but threw up. Mr. Chamberland had been right. It no longer mattered that he was an legal adult among the human world. He had ceased to be among them until he knew how to control the animal lurking under his skin. He could read all the books they brought him, but they each told him the same thing. Took time to form a bond between the wolf and human side. Until then . . .  soon as he had that control he was stuck living under Mr .Chamberland’s thumb. It meant following the rules. Most of them. There was some he would not be able to do.
The door creaked open and Larry came to stand in the doorway. “Are you hungry?”
Rex took a moment and took in Larry’s entire body. Least know he knew why he’d been attracted to the man, even though he threw off mixed vibes. Didn’t quiet understand why he threw off mixed vibes, other than he did not like him. From what the first book reading that Larry told him to read, he would find him irresistible because the two of them were destined to be together.
“Looks like you got lots of reading done.”
“I did.” Rex waved for Larry to come, but he shook his head. “I thought we could talk before we went to eat.” He really wanted to know why the Larry did not behave like the books spoke of most predestined mates. According to the book, there was an attraction that could not be denined. That the two paired together could not stand to be in the same area as one another without touching. So far, that’d not been the case with Larry and him. “I need to know how accurate these books are?”
“Extremely.” Larry smiled at him.
“Can’t be if you are this close to me and over there.” Not that Rex wanted to push the man into being with him.
“There are laws here.”
Right. The pack law book stated that no man could mate to a man. Rex thought that was just a chosen mate. Not destined mate. Those were not to be kept from one another, according to the other books.
“We are meant to be together.” Rex didn’t’ need to hear what Larry was going to say to know where this was going, but his wolf needed to hear the rejection.
“In this pack it is not doable. Even if it was, I’ve done been through the Choosing Ceremony and mated to someone else. We have a son and I will not abandoned them.”
Rex’s wolf snarled, baring his teeth, but then dropped to his belly when he saw the sadness lurking in the back of his mate’s eyes. Larry might not like what he had said, but he was going to standby what he said.
“It is not easy for me to ask this . . .” Larry glanced down the hallway, in both directions, then lowered his voice, “but I have to request that you recite the Mate Rejection Speech.”
His wolf whined and curled up in on himself as his chest felt like it’d been ripped from him. Then Larry’s words sank in.
“That has to come from you. I’m the lowest ranked pack member.”
“You might be by law, but your wolf is more dominate than mine, making you the strongest in our pairing.”
It was in his own hands if he broke his own heart and gave up his own destined mate. He did not want to. It felt dishonorable to do so. It would tear his and his wolf’s soul in half, but he did not want to make his destined mate unhappy.
“Are you sure this is what you want?”
“We will not be allowed to be together here. If you announced that we are destined mates then shame will come to my wife and son. I do not wish that. Not to mention how hard I have worked to become second in command. It has been my dream since I was a child.”
Just how life goes. Mom dies. He learns he’s a werewolf. Learns he has to live under the thumb of a man who hates him because of his mom’s actions and know the one that is supposed to be with him for life wants to save face and continue the life he has already built. Life really did suck.
Just do as he wishes. I do not want to make the one that belongs to us, miserable. I’d whether us be that way than him. Not like we won’t be that way anyway.
His wolf made good points.
Rex walked over to Larry, lifting his hand, but stopped before he touched his face. He sighed and then did the hardest thing he thought he’d ever do.
“Larry, the one destined to be mine, I reject you and hope that the fates decide to pair us both again.”
It was as if a long band snapped back into his chest. His wolf snarled and howled as he stumbled back a couple of steps. Larry rubbed his chest and hung his head. The two of them stood there staring for a couple of minutes then Larry waved at the door.
“Come one, I’ll show you to the cafeteria. How it works is self-explanatory.”

Chapter 9
Rex tugged on the gray sweats Larry had brought along with him. Wasn’t what he wanted to do, but it was what him and his wolf decided was best to do. For the mean time. To honor his mom. To aid the people that he should have been leading. Rex’s human side still wasn’t quite sure what was going on, but he was sure that a wolf lived inside him. One his mom had known that did so. One that apparently, had killed his dad. Nope. She never would have done so. Not his mom. She loved his dad. There had to be more to the story. And he’d discover it as soon as he could. First, he needed to read those books his Mr. Chamberland said Larry would bring him. Figure out what was going on inside him. What these rules and laws were that Mr. Chamberland insisted bond him to live under his thumb until he turned twenty-one. So not happening.
“Here we are.” Larry waved at a door that lead to a room.
Rex came up to the doorway, frowning. The room barely held the ran down, brown dresser and bed that sat inside. There was no closest or bathroom attached.
“The bathroom is at the end of the hall.” Larry sighed. “I’m sorry. I know it’s not much, but it’s what he’s assigned you to. I would have . . . if it was up to me . . .  “ Larry shook his head, lowering his eyes. “Not an option. Sorry.” Larry wiped his eyes before he locked eyes with him. “I placed all the books that our wolf pups are required to read as they grow up. I laid the one I suggest you read first on top. It will explain a lot. Especially, pages 102-120.”
Would it tell Rex how his life got turned upside down? Would it tell him why his mom lied to him? Would it tell him why Larry acted like he was attracted to him one minutes then became bruitsh the next? Would it explain why Mr. Chamberland was an ass?
Rex doubted all those answers would be given. What he expected was to figure out what he should have learned years ago. That would help him. He hoped.

Chapter 8 Part 2
Once seated in front of the desk, Mr. Chamberland frowned and grunted. “My sister has once again put her responsibility onto me. I received a call from a Captain Alvin Thurmond.”
“What did my Uncle want?” He would not have called unless . . . “Are my parents all right?”
“Hush.” Mr. Chamberland slammed his hand onto the desk. “It is time you learned to respect those in power.”
A trace of heat washed over Rex, but it passed him by just as fast as it came about.
“He called to tell you that a wild dog attacked and killed both your parents, but it was no wild dog. I know this and I will not keep the truth from you.”
Wild dog? Killed? Both. No.
“Your mother is the one that killed your father and then herself.”
“What the . . .” Rex shoved to his feet and reached across the desk, but Mr. Chamberland slid his chair back.
“Sit down. Now.”
Another wave of heat washed over Rex, but it did not take the boiling anger with it. “How dare you. You have no right to say such.”
“I said sit down.” Mr. Chamberland rose to his feet just as more heat rushed by me. “Now.”
Rex pushed away from the desk and made a step to the side of it, heading right for Mr. Chamberland. He was met by Mr. Chamberland, who threw a punch, but Rex ducked it and shoved the man so hard he fell backwards. Rex followed him down, pinning the man to the floor with an arm across his throat.
“My mother loved my father. She would not harm him. You have no right to say such about her. You will not speak of her again. Are we clear?”
Rex locked eyes with Mr. Chamberland, but he had screwed his eyes shut and tilted his head to the side. Rex went to press harder on the man’s throat, but noticed that there were white . . . Fur? Why was fur covering his arms? He leapt back and held his arms up in front of him. He caught sight of himself in the mirror hung beside Mr. Chamberland’s desk, gasping. His eyes were . . . no longer human shaped. They help an . . . animal aspect to them.
“What is happening to me?”
His words sounded muffled, but Mr. Chamberland must have known what he asked. “Your mother failed to tell you that you are only half human. She was a full blood she-Alpha werewolf. Such gave her a great honor of being the future honor of being the Alpha of the Chamberland Pack once our father stepped down, but she put herself before her pack. Before her family. Before her responsibility. Just like she did with you. By failing to teach you from your birth that you are half werewolf and making you live our way of life, you are being thrown into the deep end of a new way of life. One that is different for you than any other, because of your mother’s choices.”
Rex listened and watched as his arms shrunk and his legs gave way. He landed on the floor, on four legs and a torso of a wolf. He threw his head back, but before he could howl, a sharp command was issued.
“Do not do it. You are below me. You know it, wolf.”
Rex wasn’t sure what Mr. Chamberland meant, but his wolf side seemed to agree, because he did not release the howl. Rex wasn’t sure if how to get an answer as to why he was below Mr. Chamberland when he could feel more power coursing through him than he could smell, and power did have a smell, on Mr. Chamberland. Instead of potent strength and an air of authority flowing from Mr. Chamberland all Rex felt from him was weakness and meanness. He wasn’t sure how he knew what he smelt and felt, but he did to. His wolf was giving him the answers to what he was dechipering through scent and taste in the air, but his wolf was not enlightening him as to why he was not allowed to show Mr. Chamberland just how much stronger they were than him. Didn’t take long for Mr. Chamberland to give him the full details.
“Your mother chose to bed a human instead of the man our father chose to be her mate. She ended up pregnant with his child and broke her promise to the man our father chose. Our father and Pack was embarrassed. Father decided to disown her from the family and pack, but your sister begged he keep you listed as a Unnamed Pack Member and be allowed to return on your eighteen birthday to be taught how to control your wolf. Father was kindhearted and agreed to it. Therefore, I had to live up to it when she called me. Now . . . She has gone and killed your father and herself, leaving me to finish raising you.”
Raising him? He was eighteen. Legal adult. Graduated high school. Mom and dad had insurance and from what Mr. Chamberland had said, the law believed a dog attacked and killed them, so the insurance will pay out. He would have money to take care of himself while he attended college. All he had to do was get back to his human form and schedule a flight home. Get back to his dad’s family and never return to this crazy place again. No matter what kind of freak . . . no, he wasn’t a freak. He was different. If he was a werewolf and his mom was, and the people in Chamberland was, then there had to be others. That meant he could find someone else to teach him about his werewolf side. Someone who his wolf trusted and did not want to rip in half, even though he could not do so.
We can not do that, human side.
Rex cringed inside his wolf body. He had not expected to hear his wolf speak to him. But he never thought a person could have a wolf inside either, so why would the two parts of himself not be able to communicate.
We are bound to this pack. It is our blood pack. It is in our blood to lead this pack. Our mother should have been the Alpha, not this weak ass werewolf. He is an imposter and uses guns. Werewolves do not need guns. I can feel the pain and fear seeping through our pack bond. These people need our help. They need an Alpha that will lead them. Geiud them. Honor them. Give them the support they need.
“You are one of my pack members.” Mr. Chamberland snorted. “By the Pack Law Book, you are and will remain the lowest ranked member of the Chamberland Pack. That means you do as anyone, man or woman, says to do. When they say it. No back talking. Basically, anyone says jump, you ask how high. We clear?”
Unfortuantaely I think he might be right. The wolf snarled, but bowed his head. But that does not mean we can not help these people. We just have to find a way to do so. It will come to us. Until it does . . . we do our best to behave. Both of us. Can we do that?
Rex wasn’t sure who the wolf was asking the question to more. The human side, or himself. Rex could feel the anger coursing through them. The urge to fire back and take down the weaker leader. Take over what should be his, yet the wolf side knew he was not able to do so. He wanted to abide by the law, but also aid the ones who needed it. It would not be easy on either one of them to control their dominate ways, but together they’d do their best.
“Shift back. Larry will take you to your room. He will tell you how things work here and you will follow the rules laid out for you. Books will be brought to you. You will read them. Learn them. And do as told. Make no waves. We clear?”
Once again my wolf bowed his head.
“Then shift.”

Chapter 8 Part 1
A howl rippled into the silent yard from the open window. The gun toting guy on the left side of the house dropped to his knees as did the three gentlemen standing on the right side of the house. Their heads flew back, but no sounds came from their open throats. The door flew open and Mr. Chamberland charged down the porch and right up to him. He gripped Rex by his shirt collar and lifted him up.
Rex was not sure what was taking place, but he defended himself. He kicked out, landing a hard blow to Mr. Chamberland’s chin as he thrust his hands up and into Mr. Chamberland’s throat. Mr. Chamberland released his hold and stumbled back, falling to his knees.
The gun toting guy leapt to Mr. Chamberland’s side and pointed the gun at Rex. Rex might not have a firearm, but that would not keep him from defending himself. He had taken TawKawnDo most of his life and faced down bullies every day of school. Guns might take him down with one shot, but he would go down fighting. He dropped into fight stance and watched the gun guy as Mr. Chamberland staggered to his feet.
“How dare you?” Mr. Chamberland jerked the gun from the guy’s hand and pointed it right at my temple. “Do you think you are stronger than a bullet?”
“Sir,” Larry moved to stand in between Mr. Chamberland and him, “Dalton explained to you that he is in the dark. As far as he knew, you attacked and he defended himself. He does not have a clue as to what his actions meant. Sir.”
“I can not have him behaving in such a manner.” Mr. Chamberland lowered the gun and moved so he stared at Rex. “Take him to my office. It is time he learns a few things about his dear mother and himself.” Mr. Chamberland shoved the gun back into the man’s hand and barked out a commander to get back to his post.
Everyone was motionless until Mr. Chamberland slammed the front door. Then they all dispersed. Larry came up to Rex’s side and took him by the arm.
“You can not ever do that again.” He leaned closer and dropped his voice to barely above a whisper. “That was amazing.” He then stood up taller and started moving them toward the front porch. “You will have to remain quiet and do as Mr. Chamberland says from now on. It will be a big adjustment for you, but just know it is in your best interest.”
Warmth zeroed in on my arm where Larry was rubbing a circle over the top of my forearm. Once he paused and glanced down, giving him a smile that spoke of nothing but pure adoration. Rex wasn’t sure what was going on with the people his mom had sent him to for the Summer, but one thing was clear the man looking at him, wanted him, even if he was closeted. That was the reason Rex would leave him be. He would not live a life hidden away. He was a man who wanted to be open about who he was and be true to himself, whoever that turned out to be. He’d yet to discover all the small aspects of his life, but they lay ahead of him, and once he found them, he’d find a partner that fit into his life. And that wouldn’t be someone in a closet.
“I’m sorry for what you are about to hear and I will be there for you as much as I can.” Larry opened the front door and waved me inside. “Go straight down the hall and to the room on the right. Knock. Wait to be told to enter. Then go and sit in front of the desk. Remain quiet until asked a question. Then listen to what he has to say. All the way through.”
“Why?”
“Trust me. You need to hear what he has to tell you. As much as it might hurt you.” Larry’s hand came to rest on the low part of Rex’s back and gave him a slight push forward. “I’ll be here when you are finished.”
