Chapter 10
Rex rubbed his eyes  and laid the last book in the stack down. He wasn’t sure what time it was, or how long he’d been holed up in the assigned room. Wrong. According to the book he’d finished reading, the wolves with the highest rank received the rooms with the most comfort due to their ability to protect and guard the pack. The pack alpha being the one who owns the Pack House and has an entire floor for himself and his family. That should have been his area. He was ten time stronger than his Mr. Chamberland, but because . . . . the pack law book stated that the illegitimate child of Rene Dawn Chamber land, whose name had been marked out of the Pack Register, no longer held the right to hold any position among the pack and was to be considered the lowest ranked pack member, no matter his power status. That law had his wolf howling inside his head, but when he read that the legal age limit among the werewolves was twenty-one, because their bodies did not completely mature until then, he’d all but threw up. Mr. Chamberland had been right. It no longer mattered that he was an legal adult among the human world. He had ceased to be among them until he knew how to control the animal lurking under his skin. He could read all the books they brought him, but they each told him the same thing. Took time to form a bond between the wolf and human side. Until then . . .  soon as he had that control he was stuck living under Mr .Chamberland’s thumb. It meant following the rules. Most of them. There was some he would not be able to do.
The door creaked open and Larry came to stand in the doorway. “Are you hungry?”
Rex took a moment and took in Larry’s entire body. Least know he knew why he’d been attracted to the man, even though he threw off mixed vibes. Didn’t quiet understand why he threw off mixed vibes, other than he did not like him. From what the first book reading that Larry told him to read, he would find him irresistible because the two of them were destined to be together.
“Looks like you got lots of reading done.”
“I did.” Rex waved for Larry to come, but he shook his head. “I thought we could talk before we went to eat.” He really wanted to know why the Larry did not behave like the books spoke of most predestined mates. According to the book, there was an attraction that could not be denined. That the two paired together could not stand to be in the same area as one another without touching. So far, that’d not been the case with Larry and him. “I need to know how accurate these books are?”
“Extremely.” Larry smiled at him.
“Can’t be if you are this close to me and over there.” Not that Rex wanted to push the man into being with him.
“There are laws here.”
Right. The pack law book stated that no man could mate to a man. Rex thought that was just a chosen mate. Not destined mate. Those were not to be kept from one another, according to the other books.
“We are meant to be together.” Rex didn’t’ need to hear what Larry was going to say to know where this was going, but his wolf needed to hear the rejection.
“In this pack it is not doable. Even if it was, I’ve done been through the Choosing Ceremony and mated to someone else. We have a son and I will not abandoned them.”
Rex’s wolf snarled, baring his teeth, but then dropped to his belly when he saw the sadness lurking in the back of his mate’s eyes. Larry might not like what he had said, but he was going to standby what he said.
“It is not easy for me to ask this . . .” Larry glanced down the hallway, in both directions, then lowered his voice, “but I have to request that you recite the Mate Rejection Speech.”
His wolf whined and curled up in on himself as his chest felt like it’d been ripped from him. Then Larry’s words sank in.
“That has to come from you. I’m the lowest ranked pack member.”
“You might be by law, but your wolf is more dominate than mine, making you the strongest in our pairing.”
It was in his own hands if he broke his own heart and gave up his own destined mate. He did not want to. It felt dishonorable to do so. It would tear his and his wolf’s soul in half, but he did not want to make his destined mate unhappy.
“Are you sure this is what you want?”
“We will not be allowed to be together here. If you announced that we are destined mates then shame will come to my wife and son. I do not wish that. Not to mention how hard I have worked to become second in command. It has been my dream since I was a child.”
Just how life goes. Mom dies. He learns he’s a werewolf. Learns he has to live under the thumb of a man who hates him because of his mom’s actions and know the one that is supposed to be with him for life wants to save face and continue the life he has already built. Life really did suck.
Just do as he wishes. I do not want to make the one that belongs to us, miserable. I’d whether us be that way than him. Not like we won’t be that way anyway.
His wolf made good points.
Rex walked over to Larry, lifting his hand, but stopped before he touched his face. He sighed and then did the hardest thing he thought he’d ever do.
“Larry, the one destined to be mine, I reject you and hope that the fates decide to pair us both again.”
It was as if a long band snapped back into his chest. His wolf snarled and howled as he stumbled back a couple of steps. Larry rubbed his chest and hung his head. The two of them stood there staring for a couple of minutes then Larry waved at the door.
“Come one, I’ll show you to the cafeteria. How it works is self-explanatory.”
