Chapter 18

Bobby jerked the phone from the table and swiped left. “What’s wrong, Tommy?” He was supposed to be at work. He would not call unless something . . .

“Honey, nothing is wrong. Didn’t mean to scare you.”

Calm breath. In. Out. He’s fine. Breath. “Sorry, baby. How are you?”

“I’m a bit confused, but fine.”

Confused?  Why? “What’s going on?”

“Would the Alpha order my boss to give me three weeks off with pay?”

Huh. Would he? Didn’t seem like something he’d do. “Don’t see why. Why you ask, baby?”

“Just happened. Not that I’m complaining. Don’t understand why.”

Sure didn’t sound like Daddy Simon when in Alpha mode. He’d not do anything to harm a pack member’s income and having him give an employee that much time off with pay . . . “Let me call and talk to him. Something has to be up.”

“Talk to you after work. We’re picking up.”

“Okay, baby. Don’t work too hard.”

“Won’t.”

Bobby dialed Daddy Simon’s private line, knowing he’d only get the answering serving if he called the pack line that late at night. The greeting he got set his nerves on edge.

“Expected this call.”

“So you did give the order.”

“I did, son.”

“Why?” Seemed more personal than professional. Ire rose in the pit of his stomach, but Bobby forced it to remain there. He would not lose his temper. Nope. He was wiser than losing his control.

“You two can have more time to get to know one another.”

“Daddy Simon, I don’t need you butting in on how I run my relationship.” Okay, maybe the fiery anger rushing in his stomach did not completely stay there.

“I know, son. It’s just you are so happy. If you two have to work around work schedules to see one another then you won’t be able to get to know each other.”

“I still have to work!”

“You’ve been given the next three weeks off too. With pay.”

Bobby’s fingernails dung into his palms as his fist tightened. His head throbbed as his heart raced. Didn’t last as his mind told him how kind and caring and sweet Daddy Simon had been. His mental voice of reason was correct, but interference in his life was inappropriate. Nice as it would be to be able to spend three weeks in a row getting to know the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with would be, Daddy Simon had overstepped some major bounds. Could have cost him Tommy. Tommy did not like people interfering in his life. Neither did he.

Ugh . . . There was no way to say if he was pissed as hell, which he was, or to say if glee, which he was, won out. Since both seemed to course through him on an equal basis, he said, “Don’t know whether to be pissed or happy with you, so I’ll leave it at both. But . . . Promise you’ll stay out of my love life from now on.”

“I promise.”

With that promise given they hung up and Bobby slammed his head back into the chair, sighing. How would he explain Daddy Simon’s interference to Tommy.
